I couldn't help notice the lack of Cork runners in the top 3 for the marathon and half-marathon. Just seems unusual for a local event.

Weather for the weekend - Sat 30th Nov & Sun 1st Dec 2019

There are a number of events in Cork this weekend including the Clonakilty marathon on Saturday  and the Douglas Credit Union 5k in Cork City on Sunday.

Sat 30th Nov 2019... There is a low pressure system to the south of Ireland and there will be a weather front near the south coast.

For the Clonakilty marathon, it is likely to be overcast with a reasonable chance of showers. While the temperatures are reasonably mild for late November, there will be a strong breeze from the East which will be coming in off the sea. The chances of rain increase as the morning goes on.

For the various parkruns further north, the chance is rain is reduced but it will never be too far away.

Sun 1st Dec 2019... A modest high pressure system will build on Saturday night over the country and by Sunday morning, the wind should have gone around to the North. Sunday morning is likely to be bright, cold but dry. The wind from the North will be light and it definitely looks like the better of the two days.

Notice: Douglas Credit Union Charity 5k in Tramore Valley Park - Sun 1st Dec 2019

This brand new charity 5k is coming up in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City on Sunday the 1st of December 2019 at 11am.

It will use the exact same 5k course that was used for the recent Cork BHAA HSE 5k there.

Entries... The entry fee is €10 and you can enter online HERE

Pre-entries are now closed but you can still enter on the morning of the race.

Please note that there will be a draw for a free pair of NIKE AIR PEGASUS shoes for all those who pre-enter courtesy of John Buckley Sports.

All proceeds go towards the following two charities...

Cork Cancer Care Centre - a ‘home away from home’ where vital support is provided to all those touched by Cancer including free counselling as well as a range of complimentary therapies.

Cork Rainbow Club - a charity who’s aim is to to help and support Children, Teens, Young Adults and their families living with autism

Access by car is of course via the South Link Road. There is a pedestrian entrance from near Douglas Shopping Centre but it's a fair bit away.

The 5k course itself is basically two 2.5km loops...

There are no real hills to speak of and the course is a mix of a compact gravel surface and tarmac.

More info about the park at this LINK

Considering its central location and proximity to the South Rung Road, it should get a good turnout.

From the organisers... Douglas Credit Union are pleased to announce their 5K run/walk in aid of our 2 designated charities:
Rainbow Club – a charity who’s aim is to to help and support Children, Teens, Young Adults and their families living with autism
Cork Cancer Care Centre –  a ‘home away from home’ where vital support is provided to all those touched by Cancer including free counselling as well as a range of complimentary therapies.

Registration is online: https://www.popupraces.ie/race/douglas-credit-union-5k/
On the day we will have a marquee set up for registration/collection of numbers outside the small building near half moon lane.

This a family friendly event which we hope will rasie much needed funds for our designated charities.

All are welcome – runners, joggers, walkers, young and old.
There will be prize money for the top 3 male/female finishers.
Light refreshments will be provided on the day.
Raffle on the day While there is plenty of parking in the park, it might be an idea to carpool if at all possible.

A Mile an Hour - Running a different kind of marathon

This short film has featured at several film festivals around the world in 2019. This Australian runner and film maker runs a full marathon but it's spread out over 24 hours with as many odd jobs fitted in as well.

"A different kind of marathon; running one lap an hour, for 24hrs, around my perfectly mile long block. The rest of the time I do as much as possible; making things, odd jobs, fixing stuff. It's about running, doing, and thinking."

Sister Stephanie Baliga... The Chicago Nun with a 2:53 Marathon PB

At first glance, it's hard to imagine that this is the same person. Sister Stephanie Baliga is a nun in Chicago and is obviously a very talented runner. She has a marathon personal best time of 2h 53m 49s!

As the video below outlines, she has taken a vow of poverty so she runs in shoes that people have bought for her and in 'modest clothing'. She is even considering trying for the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials!

Guest Post: MICHAEL’S MANCHESTER MISSION... by John Walshe

The Manchester Road Race is a 4.748 mile ace held annually on Thanksgiving Day in Manchester, Connecticut in the USA. It is one of the most famous races in America and just over 11,000 runners have registered for the 2019 event.

MICHAEL’S MANCHESTER MISSION... By John Walshe

An article on this Blog five years ago along with a talk given at last year’s Clonakilty Waterfront Marathon were the inspiration that sees a West Waterford athlete lining up along with over 10,000 participants in this Thursday’s Manchester Road Race in Connecticut, USA.

The national American holiday of Thanksgiving Day sees many road races taking place throughout the country but there’s little doubt that Manchester is the most famous of all, having started back in 1927 when just 12 runners took part. As mentioned in that article of 2014, it has a rich Irish history. Held over the quirky distance of 4.748 miles, John Treacy won it four times between 1979 and 1985, in between Eamonn Coghlan notched up three victories while Corkman Mark Carroll has two wins to his credit.

Michael Coakley is a relative newcomer to running, having started off just two years ago. Since then, he has been a regular at most events in the Cork and Waterford areas and looks like clocking up a total of 200 races before the year’s end.

Michael Coakley at the recent Glenville 4 mile

Last December at Clonakilty he heard invited guest Amby Burfoot give a talk on the famous Manchester event. When Burfoot speaks of Manchester, he certainly knows his stuff. A nine-time winner of the race – his first victory came in 1968, the same year he won the Boston Marathon – the now 73-year-old hasn’t missed a race since 1963 and on Thursday will be taking part for the 57th consecutive time.

“I was so inspired by this talk and also the article that I decided I had to run the race,” explains Michael, a clerk-of-works at Cork County Council. “When I made contact with the race and mentioned I was Irish and also from Waterford with the Treacy connection, it just took off.”

The Manchester Road Race publishes a souvenir magazine-type programme each year and when the organisers heard of Michael’s story, they ran a full page article on him. “Rich Dyer, who wrote the article, has also invited me to the special Scholastic Athlete Luncheon on the Tuesday before the race. I must say I’m definitely overwhelmed by the hospitality shown so far without even having met any of them,” he admits.

Start of the Manchester race

Although a relative newcomer to running, Michael’s enthusiasm for the sport is infectious. “I started off with Peter Jones at Waterford Sports Partnership which I found was great to get going. I then did a Couch to 5km programme and it went on from there.” With a few marathons already under his belt, he loves racing at any distance and on Sunday last – the day before he flew out to Boston – he took part in the Great Glenville Run.

Michael will be joined later in the week by his wife Bridget, son Michael and daughter Shauna. “When I first said I was going to America to run a race, they didn’t seem that interested. But then when I mentioned that the day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, they suddenly had a change of heart!”

No doubt, it will be a trip to remember for all of the Coakley family – and it’s worth noting where it all began.

Britton sisters share the podium at the National Senior Cross Country Championships

The National Senior Cross Country Championships were held last weekend in Dublin and one of the biggest stories as reported in the press was how sisters Fionnuala McCormack (nee Britton) and Una Britton shared the podium.

While Fionnuala was always expected to win, this was a big result for her sister Una to snatch the third spot for a national senior Bronze medal.

As part of her build up for the cross country season, Una also ran in the Charleville Half-Marathon in Cork in September where she finished in 2nd place in a time of 1hr 20m 10s.

Una is coached by Jerry Kiernan who was one of the best distance runners in the country in his day.

Results & Photos of the Great Glenville 4 mile run - Sun 24th Nov 2019

The rain held off just long enough for this years Glenville 4 mile race with most of the runners crossing the finish line before it arrived. Conditions were near perfect for racing... cool, dry with no wind.

The was a noticeable step up in the organisation of this years race as the organisers responded to the increased numbers. It's the small changes that are made every year that makes things run smoothly...i.e. better traffic management, more organised parking, finish road closed off and improved start.

It's safe to say that the Great Glenville Run is now one of the best organised races on the calendar. It probably should be no suprise that all 600 places sold out.

Note the dramatic increase in numbers in recent years

Skibbereen race numbers drop 40%...

For many years, there was a 10km road race held in Skibbereen in West Cork but the numbers were very poor. In 2018, a new 10 miler was launched with a 5 mile race as well at the same time and it seemed to do moderately well for its first year. This year however, the overall numbers have collapsed by 40%.

The poor weather obviously wouldn't have helped but that doesn't account for such a large drop.

The races in West Cork are a bit of a mixed bag in recent years. Some do pretty well but others have dwindled away.

The 2019 Skibbereen 5 mile results are HERE

Irish runners at the San Franciso 5k parkrun - Sat 23rd Nov 2019

As you can see from the photo above (not taken in Cork!), it was a lovely sunny morning for the 5k parkrun in San Francisco on Saturday.

Cork runner Pat O'Connor is out there on business and met up with Claire O'Brien who is living there at the moment. Claire was the first woman home in a time of 18m 30m.

According to a short report from Pat, there were quite a number of Irish runners at the event as can be seen below...

Thanks Pat for the report!

The numbers dropped back a bit this week for the 5k parkrun in Ballincollig Regional Park with 368 taking part. The fact that the Glen 5k was celebrating its first birthday and the Glenville race on Sun were probably factors here.

Runners in race face littering disqualification

In a recent development, organisers of the recent Conwy Half Marathon in North Wales have threatened participants with disqualification if they are seen discarding their rubbish outside of a water stop or not with a race steward.

This follows the marked increase of single use plastic items in races in recent years and the problem of trying to clean up after races. This years London Marathon for example used 47,000 plastic bottles which had to be collected afterwards.

After the recent Dublin City Marathon, there were images on social media about all of the plastic bottles littering the streets of the capital. It's worth remembering that the vast majority of inhabitants of any city will have little or no interest in any running event and dumping rubbish everywhere is being seen as increasingly unacceptable.

Some race have trialed the use of edible sachets of water made from a natural seaweed product. Will this become the norm?

BLOE National Cross Country Championships held in Cork in 1991...

1991 was a time when there were two governing bodies in Ireland for athletics... the BLOE and the NACA. This video shows the BLOE national cross country championships which were held in Cork that year.

As it's 28 years ago, many of the children in the clip are probably in their late 30's and early 40's now.

It was also a time when cross country was much popular than it is today as can be seen for the size of the field.

Spotted on Twitter... Cork runner John Robinson

I spotted this photo on the parkrun Ireland Twitter feed... John Robinson was the person who compiled the overall standings for the Ballycotton Summer Series for many years.

While John was a handy runner back in the day, he can now be found helping out at the 5k parkrun in Tralee.

Poor turnout for Munster Senior Cross Country - Sun 10th Nov 2019

Just catching on some previous results. This years Munster Senior Cross Country Championships were held in Conna in NE Cork on Sunday the 17th of November 2019.

The results can be found HERE

The numbers look to be even worse than recent years with just 3 out of the 6 Munster counties represented in the inter-county competition in both the mens and womens events. The 3 counties were Cork, Tipperary and Clare.

This essentially meant that county teams were getting medals for turning up.

This is the same situation as it was for the Novice competition in Limerick in October. Just 3 out of 6 counties made up the inter county teams then as well (61 men & 35 women).

In the Senior inter club competition, there was just 7 men's teams from 53 runners. In the women's race, there were just 28 runners and 5 women's teams... and that's from all of Munster.

Lottery system announced for 2020 Dublin Marathon...

Post updated for revised entry conditions for 2017, 2018 & 2019 participants.

Post updated with the 'Good for Age' entry info for club runners. It is set at a level which will exclude the bulk of club runners who will have to go with the lottery option.

Update: Fri 15th Nov 2019... It looks as if that around 16,000 places for the 2020 Dublin City Marathon have been snapped up by those granted priority access. This leaves an estimated 6,400 places for the lottery entrants!

In a statement, race director said that the 16,100 figure was “higher than we expected”. He added...“It goes to show how valued an entry into the KBC Dublin Marathon has become and it's heartwarming to us as organisers to see the demand continue to grow. The lottery closes at the end of the month and we also need to discuss with Gardai and the city about what number we can take next year. Until all that happens then we don’t know exact numbers.”

It is not known at present if they will be allowed to add additional numbers by the city authorities.

Update from the organisers (31st Oct 2019)... KBC Dublin Marathon, have made the decision to guarantee a race entry for anyone who has participated in one of the last three editions of the KBC Dublin Marathon namely, the 2017, 2018 or 2019 event. Eligible participants will be able to guarantee their place in the 2020 event provided they enter within 72 hours of receiving a unique URL enabling them to do so. The URL will be issued at 12 noon on Friday 1st November.

From the organisers....The KBC Dublin Marathon race organisers have today announced that registration for the 2020 Dublin Marathon will occur through a lottery system instead of the first-come, first-served online process. This decision was made as a result of the increased demand for race entries.
