New 5k parkrun for Mallow in 2019
Update! The new 5k parkrun in Mallow will be starting on Saturday the 2nd of February 2019 at 9:30am.
Update eile! See the new course below...
Mallow Town 5k parkrun... This is the approx route. See the start in Green. You do a loop of the town park.......then west along the river bank...under the bridges and then north. This is an out and back section with a climb at the northerly end. Then it's back to the town park...one more loop...and past the start line to the finish. Follow the arrows and it's pretty clear.
It is a mix of surfaces with tarmac, gravel and grass.
Being next to the River Blackwater, it may be subject to flooding at times so a few Saturdays are likely to be lost during the year.
The course was measured by John Holland of Mallow AC who measures a lot of the races courses in the North Cork area.
This will be the eight parkrun in the county.
Like all parkruns, it will be...
1) On an accurately measured 5k course.
2) Be on every Saturday at 9:30am.
3) Be completely free.
If you would like to be involved and help out with this free event then send an email to john.kissane (at) parkrun dot com & he'll put you in touch with the event director.
Great news. Hopefully that will be another nail in the coffin for overpriced 5kms
ReplyDeleteA yes and what about the fairly priced 5k that also suffer due to park runs. Remember usually the people I see helping out at these races are the same people that always help with the club events that offer a structure for the young up and coming runners.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't always have to be about nailing other events.
There will always be a place for the fairly priced races in my opinion. Park runs are great for training and getting in race practice but I would think most peoples PBs come in organised 5k races rather than at park runs. They are of great benefit and may not be as intimidating as an organised races. I believe if there wasn't park runs you would have less people at other races as it is a great entry into running which progresses to all races.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to see where the park run will be. Doneraile ? No one forces anyone to pay the admission for "over priced" 5kms.
ReplyDeleteI would assume it will be held in the town park/ castle park area, as if it was in Doneraile it would not be The mallow pk run!
DeleteClearly NOT in Doneraile it's MALLOW PARK RUN !
DeleteSome 5k's in 2018 cost up to €25 but it is really up to each individual what type of event they want to do. As someone mentioned, some road races can be very intimidating to beginners. The ethos of parkrun is participation rather than a certain time or finishing position.
ReplyDeleteWhen is this park run starting?
ReplyDeleteFeb 2nd at 9.30
DeletePark Run is a run not a race. Most park runners would be put off by the idea of a race and park run is great for them. For those with a competitive edge like me a race is about giving 100% to get the best time possible. When I run park run i generally go at a training pace. I think park run and 5k races both have their place and appeal to different runners..
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to trying out the Park Run in Mallow.
Can't wait to do this well done Mallow 5k I love to run with my club but don't get much time outside of it so with this structured run it would give me a goal
ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand, it will be in the town park area of Mallow.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see a park run close to home. Well done Mallow
ReplyDeleteTrying to getting back into exercise after 2 babies. Can the parkruns be walked, or is that a stupid question. Must they be run? Thanks
ReplyDeleteBrillant!
ReplyDeleteAny course details yet?
The idea behind parkrun is that it is open to everyone...runners and walkers.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people find the whole club thing with road races very intimidating where as parkruns are all about participation.
There should be no problem walking away and it should take about 50-55 minutes. Some of the course is out and back so just watch out for the faster runners and give them space to pass.
As John said, parkrun is open to everyone, runners, walkers, wheelchair users, and adults and children. Children must be 4 to be registered but many parents bring their younger children in prams and buggies! Children under 11 must be within arms reach of a parent or guardian at all times. register and print your barcode on parkrun.ie/register From a weather point of view, I am wondering if this course is subject to flooding.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see more Park Runs coming online, I find them great, you can track your times over a period of time on the same course (most 5km races are never run on the same course within a year). As a runner who has zero chance of ever finishing in the prizes I find the no cost great. I don't mind paying 5-10 euros for 5km races, esp when the money is going to a local AC or GAA club and when water and food are supplied afterwards, it's value for money but I flat out refuse to enter the for profit races or the gimmick type races....which is where I think Park Run have found their niche, running for the masses without all the costs and BS
ReplyDeleteCan you pay on the morning of each race, or is there a pre-registration process for it ?
ReplyDeleteIt's not a race it's a FREE park run
DeleteAll parkruns are free. Just go to parkrun.ie and register. Print out the bar code they give you and that's your ID.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the 5k, you'll be given a finishing token which you hand in at the scanning station with your bar code.
It's a very easy process.
Loads of people walk it. Some have buggies, some walk their dogs. Turn up- it’s about participation, not about times.
ReplyDeleteThe website for the event is now live - https://www.parkrun.ie/mallowtown/
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. Looking forward to getting fit and meeting new people
ReplyDeleteNo need for the aggression Rose D...
