Guest Post : Irish 10-Mile Rankings for 2018...by John Walshe
John Walshe of Ballycotton has put together an extensive list of the top Irish performances in 10 mile road races in 2018. As you can see, quite an amount of work has gone into it. If anyone spots any errors or omissions, be sure to let John Walshe know.
(Updated 29th Jan 2019)
All performances - where known - under 55 minutes men (75 in total) and under 65 minutes women (47 in total) are included. No doubt, there will be some omissions and any additions and corrections can be sent to me at: jowalshe AT eircom DOT net

Would be interesting to see an all time Irish top 10 although probably impossible to surface at this stage
ReplyDeleteDistance Running is strange, all other sports we a getting bigger, faster, stronger yet here we have 8guys under 50mins in a year and That includes a few blow ins. 25 years ago you'd have got that many at the Ballycotton 10 alone. What's the reason does anyone know?!
ReplyDeleteBack in the 80's, a lot of the runners were young men in their 20's running lots of miles. That age group are now largely missing from running.
ReplyDeleteCurrently, somewhere in the region of 80-90% of the adult membership of athletic clubs is aged 35 and over. That percentage has been steadily increasing over the last few years.
I was into my 30's back in the day and went sub 51mins for 10 miles.Maybe todays runners don't want to put in the work required to bring times down.I was lucky to make top 10, nowadays 10 milers can be won in 51 or 52 mins.Different era! Don't get me wrong they are solid times, but 10 milers were won in 47/48 mins back in 80's/90's.Think i remember 1 guy going sub 47
