From Beara AC....The fifth annual Eyeries 5 Mile Road Race sponsored by Murphy's SuperValu Castletownbere took place on Saturday 10th November in the Beara village of Eyeries.  

The previous days torrential rain gave way to a bright sunny afternoon, though some late markers did get caught in late shower. The winner this year was Shane Harrington of East Cork. Shane, who has strong local connections was cheered home through the village in a time of 29:19. This was not Shane's first appearance on the podium in Eyeries and he was keen to follow on his fourth place, (2014), third (2015) and second place (2017) with a victory this year.

He was followed by Eddie Casey, Clonakilty Road Runners, who was making his first appearance at the event. Another return visitor, Paul O'Callaghan came home eight seconds behind. The Leevale man, was gaining fast on Casey at the mile 4 marker, when the flatter final mile suited Casey better to open up a lead. 

The ladies event was won by West Muskerry's Rachel O'Shea. Native of Urhan, Rachel finished in 33:51 ahead of another local, Deirdre O'Sullivan of Beara A.C. who has performed very strongly following some solid Half-Triathlon performances during the year. They were followed by Alice Coppinger of Bantry A.C. Alice, who is no stranger to this tough course finished in 36:45. The team events was a double for Beara A.C. 

The race organisers were very pleased with the number of entrants who participated, 173, and are looking forward to building on the success of this event into its sixth year and beyond. The event was organised by Eyeries Running Promotions and Beara A.C. Next years Eyeries 5 Mile Road race takes place on Saturday 9th November 2019.
