2) In Bishopstown in Cork City so it is central to a lot of people.

** Cork Rebel Run & Rebel Run A Mile Challenge Launches for 2018**
Sunday Oct 21st 2018
On Thursday August 2nd the Annual Cork Rebel Run 5k and 10k was launched in CIT, Bishopstown. Now in its 7th year the event will take place on Sunday October 21st. The organising committee of CorkSports Partnership, Leisureworld Cork and Cork Institute of Technology welcome both Cork City Council and Cork County Council as sponsors and look forward to having them on board again for 2018. Last year’s event saw record numbers take part in the event with over 730 participants across both events and it is hoped to build on this again for 2018.

Rebel Run 5k and 10k organisers and sponsors. Lord Mayor Cllr Mick Finn, Mayor of County Cork Cllr Patrick Gerard Muprhy, Claire Hurley, Kristine Meenaghan (CSP) Stephen Scully (Cork City Council) Craig Harrington (CSP & CIT) Miriam Deasy (CIT) Mark McManus (Leisureworld)

The Cork Rebel Run is organised by Cork Sports Partnership as part of their programme of providing
opportunities for all to be active & stay active. A number of Couch to 5K programmes will also be running across the county in the lead up to the event to support anyone taking up jogging or running for the first time. These programmes will commence in late August in 7 locations and are 8 weeks in duration, full details are available on the Rebel Run website. At a time of the year when it’s hard to get motivated to do some activity the organisers hope that people will get involved in the programmes and events and hope to have a great turn out on October 21st
.
The Rebel Run A Mile Challenge will also be taking place again this year and we are delighted to have Boston Scientific Cork as sponsors for this programme which encourages participants & staff from adult disability services across Cork City and County to increase their fitness through a 4 week walking and jogging programme. The 4 week programme will culminate with a 1 mile challenge event on the athletics track in CIT on Friday Oct 19th. The programme which was piloted last year had over 80 participants from 9 centres involved. This year and with the support of Boston Scientific and our programme partners Down Syndrome Cork we hope to expand our reach and encourage more services and participants to get involved. A 1 Mile Challenge event will also coincide with our 5k and 10k events on Sun Oct 21st where our partners Down Syndrome Cork will encourage their members and families to take part. The Rebel Run 1 Mile Challenge will be a fantastic addition to our events for 2018 and we are delighted to have Boston Scientific on board as well as event partners Down Syndrome Cork.

Rebel Run A Mile Challenge Partners and Sponsor 2018: L-R Lord Mayor Cllr Mick Finn, Kristine Meenaghan CSP, Eilish Walsh Boston Scientific Cork, Members of Down Syndrome Cork, Padraig Healy CSP and Mayor of County Cork Cllr Patrick Gerard Murphy.

Lord Mayor Cllr Mick Finn “is delighted that Cork City Council is supporting the Rebel Run and
encouraging increased levels of physical activity, which may even lead to participating in the Cork City Marathon next June.” It is hoped through a number of initiatives such as the Rebel Run, Marathon Youth Challenge and localised programmes for youth in particular that a more accessible pathway for participants of all ages will be created. Mayor of County Cork Cllr Patrick Gerard Murphy, mentioned how happy the Council is to again be a part of The Cork Rebel Run again this year. “The positive impact physical activity of any kind has on mental health and wellbeing at all ages is hugely significant and it is an area that Cork County Council is concentrating on more and more. Citizen quality of life is very important to us as a local authority and our support of the run is another example of our intention to continuously promote physical activity of any kind”.

The event promises to be a great experience, with the course being accurately measured by Jones
counter, chip timing for all runners, a scenic rolling course & goody bags including your 2018 Cork Rebel Run T-shirt. The 10K event also has a huge array of prizes up for grabs on the day, and will prove attractive to runners of all levels and abilities. Participant spot prizes will also be given to the 5K participants. The organising partners of Cork Sports Partnership, Leisureworld and CIT with the assistance of the An Garda Síochána and Athletics Ireland hope that friends & family will come along on the day, cheering from the grandstand to support the runners in the final straight.
Online registration is now open and entries cost €15 for the 10k and €10 for the 5K and can be made
