Funding approved for Cork Harbour Greenway & other local projects

Back in May of 2017, I had a post about the proposed new Greenway from Monkstown to Raffeen Bridge with the eventual aim to have a Greenway from Cork City to Carrigaline. In May, Cork County Council approved the plan.

It was announced today that funding has now been secured from the Government and 2kms of the 5km new extension may be completed by June of 2018. Which section will be completed first isn't clear and the works associated with the new waste treatment plant in Shanbally may be a factor.

Other projects approved for funding are in Kealkill, Whitegate, Bandon, Blarney, Carrignavar, Carrigtwohill, Killavullen, Kilworth, Glanmire, Glounthaune, Macroom, Mallow and Youghal. See bottom of post.

Statement from Cork County Council...

Cork County Council is delighted to have received funding for a number of projects under the 2017 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, details of which were announced today by Michael Ring TD, Minister for Rural and Community Development. The Scheme provides for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure and the maintenance, enhancement and promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure.

Within the county, a total of 12 projects have received funding of up to €10,000 each which will involve Cork County Council working with local communities to enhance local amenities, demonstrating the strong working relationship between the Council and local groups. In addition to these projects, €1 million has been awarded to the Cork Harbour Greenway project where it is proposed to extend existing greenway facilities by commencing the development of a link that will connect Glenbrook to Carrigaline to provide for a harbour-long greenway.

Commenting on the announcement today, Cllr. Declan Hurley,
The Mayor of the County of Cork, welcomed the funding award, noting the positive contribution that investment in such amenities makes to local communities as well as to the tourism potential of the county.

"Securing funding of € 1 million for the Cork Harbour Greenway project is a significant step towards the development of the link that will connect the greenway paths between Carrigaline and Crosshaven and between Passage West and the City for the benefit of local communities, wider Metropolitan Cork and visitors to the county."
