Notice...Great Island 10 mile & 4 mile road race, Cobh - Sun 9th Apr 2017
Another big 10 mile road race coming up in Cork in the near future is the Great Island 10 in Cobh on Sunday, the 10th of April 2016 at 10:30am. With the likes of the Dungarvan 10, the Ballycotton 10 and the Mallow 10 selling out early, this one is likely to get a big turn out again.
The event is being organised by Ballymore Cobh AC and 75% of the proceeds go towards the Irish Cancer Society. When this race was first set up in 2010, the organisers had a target of raising €100,000 in the space of 5 years. In 2013, they hit the €100k mark one year early and have now exceeded €150k. The aim now is to continue to raise much needed funds for this charity.
For anyone who wants to do a shorter distance, there is also a 4 mile road race. Anyone considering these races shouldn't be put off thinking it's just for serious runners. It's open to everyone...runners, joggers and walkers...the whole idea is to raise as much money for charity.
The 10 mile race will start at 10:30am while the 4 mile race will start at 10:45am.
Entries....You can enter online HERE ...€10 for the 4 mile and €20 for the 10 mile (plus online charges).

Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5k race... Sun 26th Feb 2017
A total of 330 runners took part in this years Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5k race on the Marina circuit in Cork City on Sunday the 26th of February 2017. One unusual feature of this race was the early start time of 9am as opposed to the more usual 11am start for BHAA races. As luck would have it, the weather was much dryer at 9am as a band of heavy rain arrived in Cork City around 11am.

Thoughts? What did you think of the 9am start as opposed to 11am? In this case, they had to make the change today but would you like to see the BHAA races start at an earlier time?
I guess it has good points. The obvious bad point is having to get up earlier! :o) The obvious advantage is that you can get the race out of the way and you have the whole day ahead of you.
What do you think? 9am or 11am start?

Results of the Ballincollig 5k parkrun... Sat 25th Feb 2017
The numbers were down a bit this week for the 5k parkrun in Ballincollig with 299 taking part. This was no doubt due to the wet weather and as the chart shows, it is still well above the average turnout at the end of 2016.

Just on a further note....For anyone shopping in Tesco, you'll be familiar with the Blue tokens and how money is raised for community projects and charities. One of the fundraising efforts at the moment is for a defibrillator for the parkruns. I presume it refers to the Ballincollig one?

Races on the weekend of Sat 25th & Sun 26th Feb 2017
Another busy weekend with plenty to choose from. Just remember that the Cork BHAA race in Blackrock in Cork City on Sunday starts at 9am. Also the Adare 10k is full so don't waste a trip if you haven't entered already.
The weather forecast is for rain on Saturday. Sunday looks like it might be wet as well but it will probably get worse as the days goes on. It might well be the case that the early start for the BHAA race might be a blessing in disguise.

Car Keys lost between Harty's Key and Blackrock Castle
Someone has lost their car keys between Harty's Quay and Blackrock Castle. ..."Has anyone found a car key running around by hartys quay/blackrock castle location on Thursday?"
Adare 10k on Sun 26th Feb now closed
The Adare 10k road race which is coming up on Sunday the 26th of February is now closed! There will be no entries on the day.
Last year, the race attracted a bumper field of 595 people and that was a jump of 19% on the figure for 2015. The limit this year was 850 entries.
Many of the races in Munster these days are past their peaks but this Adare race seems to be going from strength to strength.

Garmin Forerunner 10 Watch Found
Someone found a Garmin Forerunner 10 watch on the main road in Rathcormac recently. Going through the data on the watch, it looks as if the owner did a 4.31 mile run on the 29th of January which might tie in with the fun run that was in Glanmire that day?
Do you know of anyone who has lost a Garmin Forerunner 10 watch recently?
If you do, let me know and I'll pass on your details.

Notice...Lee Fields 4 mile road race - Sun 19th Mar 2017
The Lee Fields 4 mile road race is coming up in Cork City on Sunday the 19th of March 2017. This was held before in October 2015 so it has now changed to a Spring date.
The 4 mile route is the same as before...County Hall...Carrigrohane Straight...Inchigaggin Lane...Model Farm Rd...Dennehy's Cross...Victoria Cross. You can see a preview of the course HERE
You can pre-enter online HERE for €10.70 and there is a free technical top for the first 200 entrants. You can also enter on the morning of the race for €15 but obviously the tech tops might be gone at that stage.
As you can see in the flyer above, the race HQ is at the Kingsley Hotel.
The race is a partnership between HSE Drug & Alcohol Services, Cork Local and Southern Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Forces. We hope to encourage people to take part in Sunday morning activities. The Cork Local & Southern Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force has responsibility for developing a strategic, locally based response to substance misuse in Cork City, Co. Cork and Kerry. Today, the Cork Local & Southern Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force funds 47 projects. These projects are spread across local communities and voluntary agencies throughout the region to support individuals affected by substance misuse. All Drug Task Forces now have the responsibility of Alcohol added to their brief. We in the Task Force are highlighting this addition of alcohol by creating an event to support the “Hello Sunday Morning” initiative.
“Hello Sunday Morning” encourages individuals to look at changing the pattern of their drinking by taking a break from alcohol & incentivizing that break with goals e.g taking up running/exercise – further details www.hellosundaymorning.org
Details, photos and rationale of event can be found on our website - http://www.corkdrugandalcohol.ie/alcohol-info/hello-sunday-morning/
We are hoping you will support the upcoming not for profit event. Look forward to seeing you on the day.

Notice - Killeagh 4 mile road race...Sun 5th Mar 2017
This is the second year of this 4 mile race and it's organised by Killeagh Community Healthy Clubs Project in association with Youghal AC. It will be held on Sunday the 5th of March 2017 at 11am.
Considering that Killeagh is on the N25 Cork-Waterford road, the race should have a pretty big catchment area.
As you can see from the course map below, the race takes in a loop to the west of Killeagh. The race finishes at the entrance to the Killeagh GAA grounds which is the race HQ. There will also be changing and shower facilities here.
Note from the organisers.....The race HQ is in Killeagh GAA complex, where we will have registration on the morning of race. There are great facilities there for changing, showers and catering afterwards. There is plenty on parking at the GAA grounds and there is a walk way through an estate to the start line. We will have the race chipped timed as well.
We have been in constant contact with the engineer on site at the road works in Killeagh and we have been informed that it's planned to have the main Cork to Waterford road open to two way traffic this weekend so there should be no traffic delays that would effect anyone attending our race.
In relation to sponsorship we have four confirmed sponsors this year Youghal Credit Union, Midleton TSB, Castlemartyr Resort and Market Green Shopping Centre, with a number of local business helping out as well.
A full preview of the course can be seen HERE
Killeagh Healthy Clubs Project is a new initiative to promote health and well being for the Killeagh community and is organised by a combination of personal from Killeagh adult and juvenile GAA clubs, Inch Rovers Ladies Football Club and Killeagh Camogie Club. This group have a number of initiatives underway, walking groups, couch to 5k, healthy food demonstrations etc.

Added Time Bonuses for the Ballycotton 10
From Ballycotton Running Promotions...ADDED TIME BONUSES FOR BALLYCOTTON ‘10’
This year, in an effort to raise the elite standard of the race and to celebrate the 40th annual event, there will be added time bonuses for the Ballycotton ‘10’ on March 12th.
Along with the usual first three prizes (€500, €300 and €200) for men and women and the course bonuses of €500 for a new record (men, Gary Staines 47:00; women, Maria McCambridge 54:20) the following bonuses will apply:
Men: If the winner, not breaking the course record, runs inside 48:30 there will be a bonus of €300. All other runners (outside of first three) breaking 50:00 will receive a bonus of €100 along with their prize.
Women: If the winner, not breaking the course record, runs inside 55:30 there will be a bonus of €300. All other women (outside of first three) breaking 58:00 will receive a bonus of €100 along with their prize.
Only one time bonus can apply for both men and women.
While the women’s course record has been improved three times by Maria McCambridge in the past five years, in contrast the men’s standard has shown little change. In the history of the race, 48:30 has been broken on a total of 29 occasions (including four times by Noel Berkeley).
Yet only two of those 29 times – Charles Kiplgat in 2004 and Dave Mitchinson in 2005 – has been set in the past 15 years so hopefully this year will see an improvement back to the standards of the past.

Midleton voted best 5 mile race in Cork in 2016
The poll for the best 5 mile road race in Cork in 2016 closed recently and the winner was the Mdleton 5 mile held last May. It got nearly 42% of the total vote which shows how popular a race it was.
The Carrigaline 5 mile race was the runner up in second place with 15% while the East Ferry 5 mile finished in 3rd with 11.8%, just ahead of the Millstreet 5 mile in 4th pace with 11%.
The Midleton 5 mile which was held in May 2016 got a record 654 finishers. Some part of that surge in numbers was no doubt due to the fact that Midleton AC were recording their 50th anniversary.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote.

Results of the Carrigaline 5 mile road race...Sun 19th Feb 2017
The annual Carrigaline 5 mile road race was held on Sunday the 19th of February 2017 on what turned out to be a nice mild Spring morning with the temperature up around 12 deg C. The numbers were up 11% this year with 419 runners taking part, the 3rd highest ever for the event.
Back in 2012/2013, things were different in that there was usually only one main event per day on. Fast forward to 2017 and we have multiple events on over the weekend...a parkrun in Ballincolllig with 383 runners, a 4k in Cloyne with about 200 and a trail race in North Cork. Any race that can hold its numbers at the moment is doing well so any race that manages to increase its numbers is doing really well.

Notice...Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5k road race - Sun 26th Feb 2017
The annual Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5k road race is coming up next Sunday the 26th of February 2017 at 9am in Cork City.
Note the start time....It's 9am, not 11am. Entries open at 7:30am.
Please note that there is a change from previous years in that the Lee Rowing club will not be the race HQ. This year, the Cork Boat Club which is located in Blackrock village will be the race HQ and the course has been changed to account for this. It's still dead flat so it's as fast as ever.
The one issue however is parking. It is very limited near the Cork Boat Club and there is a Sunday market on at the same time.
Here is some information from the organisers..... The Gas Networks Ireland race takes place at a revised Marina 5k route this year. Registration is from 7.30am at Cork Boat Club in Blackrock village with the race starting at 9am up near Lee Rowing Club. Registration will close at 8.45am to allow runners get to the start which is approximately 1 mile from Cork Boat Club.
Parking limitations...There is very limited parking in the area surrounding Cork Boat Club. Additionally, there is a farmers market just outside later as well as construction works in Blackrock village. We are trialing a new route and venue for this race so we ask for co-operation in car-pooling/cycling to the venue where possible. The following areas are where you are likely to find parking but these will fill up early so it would be worth getting to registration as close to 8am as possible.
a) Car parks on far side of Blackrock Castle. These will fill up with early morning walkers if we have a fine morning
b) Parking near Shandon Boat Club where traditionally a lot of people would have parked for Marina 5k races. If you’ve car-pooled, the driver can drop off others who can register for them at Cork Boat Club and meet them at the start.
c) City side of Blackrock church. Meadow Grove Estate which is between Blackrock Village and Skehard Rd.
As always, the entry fee is €5 for registered runners and €10 for non-registered. I suggest you park your car and jog to the race HQ with the exact entry fee. From there, go to the start line.

Some stats for the 2017 Dungarvan 10 mile road race
The annual Dungarvan 10 mile road race in Co.Waterford is one of the biggest races on the calendar and attracts a huge number of runners from Cork. The chart below shows the clubs who had more than 20 members in the results...
Some points...
1) As expected, the host club West Waterford AC has the highest number of finishers. At the end of 2016, the club had 326 adult members and they had 134 finishers, 41% of their membership.
2) The Red dots shows just how clubs from Cork are some of the biggest in the event. In most races, it's usually local clubs who are the largest. In this case, four clubs from Cork and one from Tipperary had more finishers than Waterford AC who might have been expected to be the second largest.
3) Looking through the rest of the results with clubs less than 20 members, the pattern is the same...mostly from Cork. It's probably safe to assume that the bulk of the non-club runners are from Cork as well. In many ways, it's almost like a Cork race that was held in Co.Waterford ;o)
4) The catchment area for the Dungarvan 10 mile road race is about 100kms or 60 miles. The vast majority of the runners are within this distance. Relatively few travel from Dublin or elsewhere in the country.
Gender balance.........This is a breakdown of men and women...
Usually, the percentage of women in a 10 miler / half-marathon is about 40-42 %. The figure of 45.1% is probably a bit higher than usual. It is certainly a big change from say 10-15 years ago when the figure might have been down around 30%.
Male numbers........This is a breakdown of the men....
One interesting thing to note here is that there is no M35 category like in the women. If there were then you'd probably see that the bulk of the Senior Men (MS) shown above are aged 35 and over.
Female numbers.....This is a breakdown of the female numbers.
As you can see, the number of F35 women is almost the same as the number of F40 women. It's probable that most of the Senior Women (FS) are most likely in the 30-34 age category. This would follow the membership stats for most adults in athletic clubs i.e. the vast majority are aged 30 and above with relatively few people in their 20's running.
Results and links to thousands of photos can be found in this previous post.
Addendum...
Here are some of the numbers for the smaller clubs......

Results of the Cork BHAA Janssen 6k race in Little Island...Sun 5th Feb 2017
The annual Cork BHAA Janssen 6k road race was held in Little Island on Sunday the 5th of February 2017. A total of 290 runners took part which is down 15% on the numbers for last year.
This years numbers were down 40% compared to the peak of 491 back in 2013 and is probably a reflection of the wider choice of races available today. The 5k parkrun in Ballincollig is attracting large numbers and well over 1000 runners from Cork traveled to Waterford for the annual Dungarvan 10 mile road race.
