Frosty conditions last weekend...
This is one photo I came across which really highlights some of the conditions over the weekend. The photo shows some of the runners in the 5k parkrun in Macroom last Saturday morning. While there was no snow, there was a hard frost which turned everything white in this sheltered spot.
On Sunday, the 4 mile race in Glenville had to be cancelled due to ice on the roads.
For the next while, it's a bit milder but there is still high pressure over the country. While it's cloudy in Cork today, expect more frosts if the skies clear.

Alex O'Shea from Cork completes 100k in 7h 37m at World Championships
The World 100km championships were held on Sunday in Spain and Alex O'Shea from Cork was there representing Ireland. This is the first Irish international outing for the St.Finbarr's athlete and no doubt the first of many.
Alex's time for the 100km was 7 hours 37 mins and 16 seconds.
That's works out as 7:21 min mile pace or about 3h 13m for a marathon!

3) These stats are for clubs registered with Athletics Ireland. There are a growing number of small running clubs who are doing their own thing.

The annual Togher 5k is coming up over the Christmas period on Tuesday the 27th of December at 1pm.
This is always a popular race and is one of the biggest in Cork over Christmas. After the success of last year, Togher AC have decided to keep the same 5k course. As 5k courses go, this one is pretty fast and it's mostly around quiet housing estates.
Here is a video of the course from Togher AC (Note the date is for 2015!)...
Course Preview...Full details on the new course with directions, maps, photos, preview, etc can be seen HERE
Entries...The online entry fee is €12 and you can enter online HERE
Entries on the day also cost €12.
All proceeds from the event go towards Togher AC and Cork Mental Health Foundation.
From the organisers....Following on from the success of our event last year we are back this year with kind sponsorship from Ryans of Togher SuperValu. We are delighted to be running this event again in association with Cork Mental Health Foundation and Housing Association. All funds raised will go to support this great organisation and Togher AC.
This years event has special meaning with Togher AC celebrating 50 years in the community. There will be a sport T-shirt for all entrants and a junior race for younger competitors.
There's also a childrens race on the day at 12 noon for 10-15 year olds...0.5 miles and €2 entry.
We look forward to welcoming you all during the festive period on December 27th :-)

Guest Article by John Walshe...DONIE WALSH – NCAA CROSS-COUNTRY 1970
Cork native Donie Walsh of Leevale AC is one of the top running coaches in the country and has been involved in athletics all his life. John Walshe recently wrote an article for the Irish Examiner and the extended version appears below with his kind permission.
DONIE WALSH – NCAA CROSS-COUNTRY 1970
By John Walshe (Irish Examiner, 18/11/2016)
Last Saturday saw the culmination of the American collegiate cross-country season when the 79th NCAA championships took place at Terre Haute, hosted by Indiana State University.
Considering the major impact Irishmen on scholarship have made over the years, it may come as a surprise to learn that just three have come away with the coveted individual title – Neil Cusack (1972), Sean Dolman (1991) and Keith Kelly (2000).

Reminder...RNLI Reindeer Run on Sun 27th Nov 2016
The RNLI have asked me just to remind people about their upcoming Reindeer Run 5k in Fota House and Gardens next Sunday the 27th of November.
Last year, this event was cancelled due to the storms and rain. The forecast for next Sunday is for dry conditions so it might be a good one for anyone who wants a day out with the kids.
All proceeds go towards the RNLI who of course look after lifeboat services along the coast.
More info in this previous post.

Iarnród Éireann propose abandoning old Midleton to Youghal railway line
It was announced recently that Iarnród Éireann have proposed to abandon the old Midleton to Youghal railway line so as to reduce costs. They have said that they currently spend in the region of €3 million per year on inspecting bridges, drains, fences and crossings on unused lines around the country.
If this goes ahead then it raises the possibility that the old line could be converted in a Greenway.
The new Dungarvan to Kilmacthomas walkway in Waterford looks like a great success with loads of people using it for running, walking and cycling.
Is it time for a walkway between Midleton and Youghal?
€75k grant for new running trail in Carrigaline
Various municipal grants for various projects in Cork were announced on Monday the 21st of November.
One of these was a €75,000 grant for a running trail around the Community Park in Carrigaline. The new surface is supposed to be softer than tarmac and concrete and it will be easier on the legs.
It's probably likely that it will mean an upgrade of the existing trail around the perimeter of the park. I measured this and it seems to be around 800m.
While it may not be of interest to people who want to do a long run, it will be of interest to beginners and people doing a Couch to 5k course. The fact that it is safe and lit should be a welcome addition in the dark evenings during the Winter months.
Further afield, these grants were also announced...
Rochestown...€30,000 will be given to protect the pedestrian/cyclepath on the old railway line from Hop Island in Rochestown to Passage West from erosion by the sea.
Rochestown...€50,000 will be used to provide a new outdoor fitness zone on the Rochestown end of the old railway line and to provide landscaping and street furniture in the Community Park/Mangala, Douglas.
Ballincollig...€30,000 will be used to upgrade an additional 1.5km of walking trail in the Regional Park, Ballincollig.

Results & photos of the Munster Masters Cross Country Championships in Dungarvan...Sun 20th Nov 2016
The Munster Masters Cross Country Championships were held in Dungarvan on Sunday the 20th of November and West Waterford AC were the host club.
As is common with these events, the fields for both the men's and women's races were dominated by more local clubs. For example, in the women's race, there was no county team from Limerick or Clare. In the men's event, only Cork, Waterford and Tipperary had enough for a county team.
Overall, the standard for Masters was pretty high and many fast runners finishing well down the field.
The full results are now up on the Munster Athletics website

Alex O'Shea from Cork is selected to represent Ireland at the World 100km Championship
The latest news is that Alex O'Shea of St.Finbarr's AC has been selected to represent Ireland at the World 100km Championships in Spain.
This follows on from his impressive 5th position finish at the Irish 24 Hour Championships in Belfast during the Summer. While he didn't make the Irish 24 hour team on that occasion, he should be well suited for the 100km event where he can combine his 24 hour endurance with his 'shorter' marathon speed.
This will be the first Irish singlet for the Cork athlete and most likely not the last.
The 100km championships will be held in Spain on Sunday the 27th of November 2016 and will have 357 competitors from 33 countries.

Doctor outlines the health benefits of 5k parkruns
There was an interesting article on the parkrun website this week from a Dr. Simon Tobin in the UK who outlined the benefits of local 5k parkruns there.
Here is a short excerpt...
I have been a GP at the same practice in Southport for 23 years. My interest is cardiovascular disease, diet, exercise and diabetes, and over the past few years I have become increasingly passionate about the benefits of ‘lifestyle medicine’. In other words, what people can do to help themselves before resorting to lifelong medication.
We know that regular exercise reduces the risk of a heart attack or a stroke by a similar amount as being on a statin tablet or taking a blood pressure pill. When I ask my patients whether they would rather take medication for the rest of their lives or alternatively try improvements to their diets and increasing their exercise, they almost always choose the latter.
I’ve seen many, many people exercise themselves back to health. It’s a win-win situation for my patients and the NHS. My patients are healthier, happier and on fewer medications, and the NHS saves a fortune on unnecessary drugs and dealing with their side effects.
There are plenty of examples given in the article about the positive effects the local parkrun has had.
You can read the full article HERE
Remember, there are no shortage of 5k parkruns in Cork and Munster and they are all free. They are held every Saturday morning at 9:30am. See the calendar.
