Claire McCarthy from Cork runs 2:38 time in Berlin Marathon to qualify for the 2017 World Championships

The Berlin Marathon was held on Sunday the 25th of September and attracted a huge field of runners including many from Ireland.

Clare McCarthy of Leevale AC in Cork ran a personal best time of 2h 38m 00s and now provisionally qualifies her for the 2016 World Championships in London. What's pretty amazing is that Claire's time is exactly the same as the Irish qualifying standard.

Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers finished in 2:39:10 which is inside the IAAF standard but outside the Irish one.

Athletics Ireland has set its own Qualification Periods in which the Performance Standards must be achieved. Selection will be based on performances during the Qualification Periods from 1 January 2016 to 24 April 2017 for the Marathon (subject to change when official information is released)."

    As far as Inknow Irish qualifying times are 217 and 238 and not 219 245

    Yes the standards are 2.38.00 and 2.17.00. Well done Claire. Great running. You don't get half the credit you deserve. Well done to the other cork athletes in particular Ronan Boland for running a 2.45 at as over 50!! Super running.

    Lots of these sub 2.40 runners in Berlin ran the Clonmel half marathon also. A pretty rough calculation of their Berlin times is double their clonmel half time and add 8 minutes although with Conor McCauley its more like add 6 minutes and Chris Murnane 4 minutes.

    Is she not over the standard of 2:38:00? I didnt get to see the milliseconds but do you not have to run exactly 2:38.00 or lower? Still though hats off!
