Results & Photos of the Tramore Valley 5k parkrun...Sat 3rd Oct 2015

This was the second week of the new 5k parkrun in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City and 238 people took part. That's down from the 347 of last week but that's to be expected as the novelty factor begins to wear off and it becomes an established event every Saturday morning. I'd guess maybe long term it might settle around the 150 mark every week but we'll have to wait and see.

The last time I was in the new park was back in the Spring of 2013 so it was interesting to see what had changed in that time.

In 2013, the park still had that 'raw' look about it. The old dump had just been capped and a layer of soil placed on top. The grassland and soil was still very soft and it was obvious it had just still new. There was also in places a smell of the old dump so it was obvious what it was used for before.

Fast forward to the Autumn of 2015 and some things have changed and some things are still the same. There is some additional infrastructure put in and the roads are basically as they were. It is now essentially a grassland park and there is nothing really in the way of landscaping or shrubs. There was no hint of any unpleasant smells and it was largely quiet except for the area near the South Ring Road where there was a lot of traffic noise.

The most obvious attraction of the place is that fact it is slap bang in the middle of the south side of Cork City. With access from the South Link Road, it is probably driving wise very close to a lot of people. There is plenty of parking on site so it is very easy to pop in every Saturday morning, do the parkrun on a route with no traffic and drive home.

In a future post, I'll have some photos of the park and the route. If you haven't tried it yet, just go to the parkrun website, register, print out your bar code and bring it along. It's on every Saturday morning at 9:30am.

  1. Pedestrian & bike access is available via Half Moon Lane on the South Douglas Road as well. The gate is normally open before 9am on Saturdays.
