Membership stats for athletic clubs in Cork...end of May 2015

Athletics Ireland have released some stats recently showing the membership of clubs throughout the country. In terms of adult membership, these are the ones in Cork with more than 50 members at the end of May 2015...

Overall, the number of adults in athletic clubs has grown by 19% in Cork over the 12 months. The big change has been the fact that there has been something of a leveling off of the numbers. i.e. Some of the larger clubs have gotten smaller while some of the smaller ones have gotten bigger.

At the end of May 2014, there were 14 clubs with more than 50 adult members. That has now grown to 18 clubs. In terms of clubs with over 100 adult members, that has gone from 6 to 10.

It's probably worth mentioning as well that this doesn't represent the full story as one of the biggest growth areas in recent times has been that of running groups who are not members of athletics Ireland. There are now a number of these throughout the county and some are quiet large. e.g. Wibbly Wobbly Wonders in Ballyvolane, Happy Feet in Blarney, etc.

  1. Leaving out CIT and UCC, there are some very small clubs there on the Athletics Ireland list for Cork (e.g. Rising Sun, Carrigaline and East Cork). Have they always been this small or are their numbers falling?

  3. Rising Sun have an older membership base with an emphasis on track and field. Carrigaline have always been a smallish club while East Cork place more emphasis on training a small number of faster runners. Some clubs with couch to 5k programmes can have a lot of members as a results. Each club is different and have different priorities.

Athletics Ireland publish club transfer lists around April? In general, most members of clubs are 'home grown' instead of transfers.
