Olympic Silver Medalist John Treacy at the Bere Island parkrun in West Cork

Olympic Silver medalist and chairman of the Irish Sports Council John Treacy was in West Cork on Saturday for the Bere Island 5k parkrun.

A special gift was presented to John to mark his visit to one of the smallest parkruns in the country.

As you can see below, these are the weekly numbers for the last 8 months or so.

For the last 4 months of 2014, the weekly parkrun was getting about 20-30 per week. In the first 4 months of 2015, that has increased to about 40-50 per week.

What's hidden in those figures is the work of a bunch of volunteers turning up and helping out week in and week out in all types of weather. If they can hold a successful 5k weekly parkrun in somewhere as remote as Bere Island then it suggests that it would be successful in a lot of other locations.
