A story doing the rounds on the net today was that he was also a pretty handy runner when he was young.
In 1969 aged 17-18 year old while at high school, he ran the 800 metres in 1m 58.8s. His relay team at Redwood High in Larkspur, California, once held the 4 x 400-metre school record of 3:21.7, which remained in place for decades.
