In 2012, Irish international athlete Martin Fagan failed a drugs test for taking the performance enhancing drug EPO. After serving a two year ban, he gave an interview to RTE radio in January of this year to say he was thinking of returning to competitive running. In a poll on the site back then, 71% of the respondents said that they thought he should make a return to athletics.
Today (18th of May 2014), he won the Terenure 5 mile road race in Dublin. In a field of nearly 1500 runners, Martin Fagan finished in 24:23 in a sprint finish over Kenyan Freddy Keron Sittok.
1 Martin FAGAN Mullingar Harriers M 24:23
2 Freddy KERONSITTUK M 24:23
3 Gary Murray M 24:31
4 Conor DOONEY raheny shamrocks M 24:35
5 Joe SWEENEY DSD M 24:55
This is Fagan's first big win since returning to competitive running. At the start of May, he won the low key Coralstown 5k in 14:45. In that race, the prize for first place was €100 whereas the prize this time around for first place in Terenure was €400.
On Saturday, Ian O'Riordan had an interview with him in the Irish Times.
The womens race was won by Catherina McKiernan in a time of 27:40.
Full results are up on the Precision Timing website.
Really hope Martin Fagan will be on the start line for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Best of luck to him and Ireland's other marathon runners in lead up to Rio.
ReplyDeletebest of luck to him
ReplyDeleteHe's a drug cheat. Irish people are being hypocritical on this one
ReplyDeleteAs a previous contributor said, he's a drug cheat - there's no other way of putting it. I put him in the same boat as Michelle Smith. And don't give me the "everyone is entitled to a 2nd chance " balony. When someone takes a very deliberate decision in sport to blatantly cheat to gain advantage over their opponents, there should a No-Return policy applied.
ReplyDeleteShame on you Martin Fagan.
In response to the previous comment about the Irish being hypocrites ..Should it not be sports federations in general are hypocrites. He did the crime, did the time according to the rules so there is not a lot people can do about it.
ReplyDeleteWe all want our athletes to be clean but he has served his ban and I believe in his case there were other issues such as depression involved.
ReplyDeleteEPO doesn't cure depression. It makes you run faster and is cheating. If he wasn't caught and made London would he have come clean??Doubt it.if he wanted to get to london why was he trying to break JTs record.Surely the smart thing would have been to run 214.Was EPO needed to make him realise that??He was overtrained and burnt out and depression was due to this in my opinion.i don't know if I believe his story
ReplyDeleteDon't fall for the sob story about depression. The interview he did on the radio, the irish times is all a very convincing PR job by Fagan. irish people are quick to explain away this one but are quick to judge Asian athletes and Jamaican. Smacks of highly questionable double standards. he seems like a nice guy but he should really walk away from the sport- he is no role model
ReplyDeleteToo many Irish athletes these days don't train hard enough but yet think they are elite athletes. Martin made a mistake, and has served his punishment. Martin is now back training and racing and deserves to win races if has trained better than the other runners and is better on the day. We need more Jerry Kiernans, John Treacys and Dick Hoopers who were able to do any amount of sub-2:13:00 marathons in a year at their peak. We need more Martin Fagans and we should support them, keep them on the straight and narrow, and pick them up when they falter. And hopefully in the near future we will have athletes running even better and setting new marathon records.
ReplyDeleteJust for information purposes John Tracey has run sub 213 5 times .Jerrry Kiernan 4 times and Dick Hooper twice. Not any amount in a year.
ReplyDeletei'd take one sub 2.13 in a year .. prob retire after it :)
ReplyDeleteFagan won a 5k tonight in 1426.Bobbheffernan 5k 1 min clear of second
