Looking at some quick stats, 961 runners took part. That means that there were 21.1% no shows. Not as high as the 28% or so that there were with Ballycotton but I'd guess you'd expect that considering that the closing date was later and it was much easier to get in....i.e. less of a panic.
The percentage of women finishers was 39.9% which is very much in line with Dungarvan with 41% and Ballycotton with 38.4%.

As usual another excellent Mallow 10 race. The amount of behind the scenes work put in by club members has paid off in spades. Great goody bag, great pacing and great spread and stewarding.

ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Take a bow Mallow AC. So well organised. Plenty of stewards, bottles of water, not cups! Lots of support. A lot of clubs could take a leaf out of Mallow AC's book. Always look forward to this race, and this is reflected by how well this race is organised every year

ReplyDeleteOne suggestion I'd make is for there to be two tables in parallel to collect thr food from, as there were people at the back of tge food tables who had full plates but were still waitibg in the same queue to get up to the tea and coffee, which slowed everything down.
Other than that, my time and 'chip' time are the same in the provisional results -which is definitely not the case -my chip time should be 18 seconds faster. I guess why they're called proclvisional but I see others have different chip and gun times -so maybe my chip start time was never recorded?
great race again this year. Ballycotton has the long, distinguished tradition and it's well deserved. Mallow and Dungarvan offer something different with a faster route, less hassle with access and excellent facilities. Mallow might now even trump the other two in my opinion. excellent organisation and stewarding en route. great goodie bag and the cotton t shirt isn't bad. back again in 2015 fir sure. well done to all finishers.
ReplyDeleteReplying to Clotilde Fitzgibbons comment. I think maybe the chip mats were very sensitive. I couldnt run today as I hurt my hamstring so I cycled the course as support. My race pack was in my bag and although I didnt go over the timing chip mats, maybe it sensed me and I got a time. I am sending a mail to the race directors. Apologies for the confusion. Cant explain the rest of your comment.

Run was well organised, lovely supportive stewards, great buzz with music playing, fab goody bag and to top it all off an AMAZING spread in the hall afterwards! Fair play to ye. ReplyDeleteThanks mallow Ac for a great race, the pacers on 85 mins were brilliant and i even got a new bp of just under 84 mins. i will be back next year. The weather was just perfect too and the amount of people cheering people was fantastic. plenty of food & chat back and the youth centre, what more does a person need.

Sounds like a great day folks well done to all concerned,as a runner who missed the deadline(own fault entirely) may I please ask the organisers why the race is restricted to 1000 runners given the comments above about big wide roads great stewarding e.t.c and the BC10 averages around 2500.

Having had some experience organising races in the past with a few clubs I can only speak from experience. I would surmise that there is a health and safety element, a desire to put on the best race possible and allowing more than the 1200 might compromise these goals. There is a always a limited number of support services available and should the Gardai/civil defence be called away on the day you could have issues
No roads are closed for the event so it's testament to the organisation that it can take this kind of racers.
I would also say a club like Mallow has done the right thing and built up to this number, not jumped in at teh deep end - maybe they will aim for 1500 next year - who knows.
I would also say that the club earn little from it financially when all the bills are paid. Food/refreshments afterwards are probably supplied free of charge by club members - well done Mallow !!

I can tell you that mallow ac make little from it. the last numbers of years they lost money on the race. profit margins are no more than a couple of 100 euro. it costs over 20 grand to run the event

The prganising of this event is as always excellent and it is surely an enjoyable few hours for the athletes, serious and fun runners for the general public and local press who are honoured to record the great event,

ReplyDeleteNOTHING These were banned in your information sheet yet they were allowed to pass by all of your stewards unhindered. There was loads of traffic on the course I saw one headphone wearer run for at least 200mtrs outsidethe hard shoulder on the Killarney road oblivious to cars flying by. Why say they are banned if you choose to do nothing about. A clap on the back for a great race otherwise.

The headphone wearers- that old chesnut. They aren't supposed to wear them but could you imagine the chaos that would ensue if they were pulled off the course in the middle of a race? Most races never actually punish the offenders
ReplyDeleteI cycle the ring of kerry yearly as well as being a runner.
ReplyDeletelast year we streamed thro a vetting area where anyone with no helmet or without an entry badge on their bike was turned back.
No complaints, they organised it, they paid for road closures and so had the right to say who did or did not go on.
Same with a race, at some point where there is a turn onto a closed road, have some stewards stop anyone with headphones. If one or two races did it then the word would go out and this practise would stop..
Its very simple really dont allow the headphone wearers to start the race. They are not insured .What happens if they are in or cause an accident as could have easily happened on the busy Mallow roads as a previous poster mentioned. Any comment from Mallow AC
