Athletics Ireland has just announced the Irish team that will travel to Sopot in Poland for the IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships from the 7th to the 9th of March 2014.
They are...
Amy Foster* 60m (City of Lisburn AC)
Mark English 800m (UCD A.C)
Rose-Anne Galligan 800m (Newbridge A.C)
Ciara Everard 800m (UCD A.C)
David McCarthy 1500m (West Waterford A.C)
Claire Tarplee 1500m (DSD A.C)
* Amy Foster has decided not to compete at the World Indoor Championships in order to focus on the Commonwealth Games.
Since when do ireland take part in the commonwealth games!!!,does amy foster not run for ireland, can any explain this to me?
ReplyDeleteIs she not northern irish?
ReplyDeleteWhat about ciaran o lionaird?
ReplyDeleteShe has run in an Irish Singlet in major competition before. She is national champion. I can't understand how she can run in the commonwealth games. Surely this has come as a surprise to Athletics Ireland??? Is she currently in
ReplyDeleteReceipt if any A.I funding?
Athletes from Northern Ireland who represent Ireland at Olympics, World & European Champs are eligible to run for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games as Northern Ireland is a member of the Commonwealth.
ReplyDeleteBit of a poor showing they're only sending 6 athletes to a world competition
ReplyDeleteCan somebody explain to me how running 60M at an indoor meet in March "distracts" or "inhibits" performance at an outdoor 100M meet at the end of July? #sprintersaresoft
ReplyDeleteShe is turning down Ireland so to run for the uk.shouldn't be picked again
ReplyDeleteI think the 6 selected is a strong enough team, they can,t send more just to have a large team, those going have to be able to compete on a world level the days of moral victories are gone, lets get some athletes on the podium.
ReplyDeleteShe is probably getting proper funding from uk athletics
ReplyDeleteFrom the Belfast Telegraph today 27th Feb...
ReplyDelete"Regrettably I'm unable to take my place on the team to Poland. Qualifying for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games ends in June so I need to be in peak condition for outdoor racing in mid April. I have the European Indoors in Prague as a major goal for 2015. I wish my team mates every success in Poland ."
It's not about funding. Its about what country she feels she is from.i'm sure there are not many irish athletes would turn it down.is she using Ireland as a stepping stone!!
ReplyDeletea lot of it is about funding, these athletes are full time so funding is like their wages, why accept 12k when someone else can double or triple that? all very well wearing the green singlet but that won,t pay the bills, at least uk athletics look after their athletes and recognise their acheivments
ReplyDeleteI fail to understand how a micky mouse event like the commonwealth games takes a higher profile than a world championship for an athlete.
ReplyDeleteserious questions need to be asked here...........as in you either declare for Ireland or the UK you cannot have your cake and eat it!!!!
UK athletics arent that great especially if you are not in the chance of wining a medal.
ReplyDeleteAmy will stay with Ireland. Anyway she barely made the championships.
Irish athletic assosiation not great with our athletes either cutting funding to medal hopes o,rourke and o,liornaird.... world class athletes( from the rebel county of course).
ReplyDeleteAthletics ireland not great either... o,rourke and o,liornaird 2 world class athletes have their funding cut....
ReplyDeleteI'm actually amazed at the lack of understanding shown here about
ReplyDelete1. the arrangement to allow a 32 County AAI athlete compete for 6 county Northern Ireland.
2. the kind of training an athlete on the cusp of making an Irish or Northern Irish team has to do to make it on to one of those teams
3. the fact that this athlete is more likely to perform at a high standard at Commonwealth Games and set a good time which in turn will allow her to get more funding which will in turn help her to get on Irish teams to perform better for Ireland. If she goes to world indoors she will probably get blown out of it by athletes of a much higher standard and get slagged off with ignorant remarks like were made above.
Most of the runners commenting on here probably participate in events hosted by the BHAA and Cork AAI which between them have nearly a million Euro in assets, yet they do very little to help Irish athletes from Cork. Most of you are inactive in these organisations and so are complicit in the degeneration of the sport. Try educating yourself a little bit before slagging off Irish athletes, especially those who may happen to live in Northern Ireland and may even read this blog. A lot less was said about Ciaran and Dervals funding being cut but loads of comments to put an athlete down when they try to look out for their own career!
Begrudgery is alive and kicking in Ireland!
It's probably worth point out that the BHAA was set up some 30 years ago to promote inter-company road races. Funding of Irish athletes or athletics has nothing to do with them.
ReplyDeleteThe Cork County board gave a grant to any Irish athlete from Cork taking part in the London Olympics in 2012. Don't know about any previous or other ongoing grants.
Comment above about bhaa totally out of order. Their not about developing elite athletes, surely they can look after themelves. Its about giving club runners good quality races, on the whole superbly run(not like a lot of events run by our national athletics association). Ordinary club runners are entitled to give their views on running stories. On the bedgrudery some "elite" athletes were not happy that their teamates got more funding than they did.so its not just the common runner who indulges in a bit of begrudery.
