Entry procedure for the 2014 Ballycotton 10 mile road race...

The entry procedure for the 2014 Ballycotton 10 mile road race has now been announced and it differs from last year in that there is a lot more emphasis on online entries.

ENTRY PROCEDURE FOR BALLYCOTTON ‘10’ ROAD RACE 2014
The following is the entry procedure for next year’s Ballycotton ’10’, to take
place on Sunday March 9th. Numbers are limited as usual and there be will
be a combination of online and postal entries as follows:

1) Online entries will open on Friday December 6th at 2pm and the first 2,300 will be accepted.

2) A PDF copy of the entry form will then be published on the website on Monday December 9th (forms will also be available in John Buckley Sports, Tri n Run in Midleton and Ger Wyley Sports, Dungarvan, the same day). The first 200 non-club entries to arrive by post will be added to the above number, giving a total of 2,500.

3) After that, only AAI club members and those who ran the four races in the Ballycotton Summer Series 2013 will be accepted (by post) up until Friday December 20th and for those living overseas up until Tuesday January 7th.

4) As usual, a limited number of elite entries will be available nearer the date. This year we are not encouraging people to send in stamped addressed envelopes but anyone who wishes to do so will have the forms posted out on Friday December 6th. Entry fee for the 2014 race is again €15 (plus booking fee if entering online)

******
Note that there are 200 places available for non-club runners who enter by post. In other words, if you are a non-club runner and you did not complete the four races in the 2013 Summer Series then you really need to make sure that you enter online.

Last year, they took postal entries for two days and 1,400 places were filled. The remaining 1,100 places will filled by online entries in 2h 40m. With the additional places this year, it's likely that all 2,300 places for non-club runners will be filled by Tuesday evening.

One obvious implication of this for the organisers is that it should drastically reduce the amount of work that needs to be done processing postal entries.

If you are a club runner or have done the summer series then just print out the form and post it in before the 20th of December.
The link for entering online after 2pm on Fri 6th Dec is HERE

  1. I do hope they have a good server to handle the entries, as there could be 2000 people all hitting the reload button at 2PM on Friday the 6th.

  3. Would it be possible for those who ran the four races in the Ballycotton Summer Series 2013 to enter online also? It would save a bit of hassle.

If you are a club runner or ran all 4 summer races then there is nothing to stop you entering online when the entries open. Once the online entries close (2,300 places filled), you have to post your entry form in.

  6. Why would someone who ran the 4 summer races enter online if they can be sure to get in by post. Save the online place for another runner maybe???

More convenient for some to enter online.

  8. As usual the most confusing entry procedure of any race around.Online only entry is the way to go.

  9. Am I the only one who thinks the ballycotton 10 is over-rated and a lot of hassle for a 10 mile run. When you consider the convenient entry procedure and logistics of other 10 milers on the calendar. Also just making the point that someone I know won her age category in ballycotton last year and the prize was 1 kettlebell...lol- you would wonder why they bothered giving prizes at all!

  10. To be honest there should also be online entry available for club runners. As a club runner I will enter online as I get instant feedback that I am in. I don't trust the post.

  11. I agree with last comment. As a club runner I am going to enter online on the day it opens and finish it there and then. Why go through the hassle of forms, chq and posting. Instant feedback that you are entered.

  12. I can't believe the negativity towards Ballycotton 10.
It's a race for athletes, prizes should not be the be all and end all of running a race, it should be the buzz of the achievement and hopefully improving on a PB.
I have ran it a few times now and loved it. The reason I run the race is because it is a great day out for all involved. The race is organised really well and yes it is a bit difficult to get in to the village but whats wrong with that?? Leave on time!!!!!
As a club athlete I know that by entering through my club I am guaranteed entry as Ballycotton never limit the amount of club athletes that can enter. The limit is only ever for the NON CLUB athlete. I assume this is why Ballycotton keep club, summer series and overseas entries seperate.
By all means go and enter online but as far as I can see it is a waste of time if you are a club athlete, as you WILL get in by post if you are a member of a club.

  13. Just to reply to the comment regarding 'negativity', and subsequent implication that the motivation for running should be the buzz of achievement and not solely to win prizes. That was not my point at all. It is a given that the motivation to do a race is for the buzz of achievement, but in my opinion it is also nice to see achievement recognized. I think the ballycotton 10 is an excellent race, extremely well organised, great value for money and would recommend it to anyone.

  14. I can't see the negativity? I want to be 100% sure that I get into the race and the off chance of my entry gets lost in the post is not something I want to risk. I know a few people that this happened to last year. It is an excellent race. If there is any negativity it is toward An Post :)

  15. Whilst I agree it's a good day out, I would have to agree with the comment above about it being over rated. Other events provide far better facilities and more importantly make you feel welcome rather than make you feel like you're privileged to be there. That said, I've run it for the last 3 or 4 years and hopefully will be going again in 2014.
Also I have a question for one of the contributors above......What's your definition of an athlete??

  16. Ballycotton 10 has a great reputation and demand for entry confirms it.
Discussion about value of prizes demeans it and all great sporting events.

  17. athlete (ˈæθliːt )

    Definitions
    noun

a person trained to compete in sports or exercises involving physical strength, speed, or endurance
a person who has a natural aptitude for physical activities
(mainly British) a competitor in track and field events
    Word Origin
C18: from Latin via Greek athlētēs, from athlein to compete for a prize, from athlos a contest

I don't suppose the prizes were great back then either

Technically I'm an athlete but wouldn't consider myself one and expect I'll be last ish if I'm successful to enter
But would the winner succeed in getting into the Olympics.
Ballycotton 10 has great reputation and Leave it at that

  20. This is a joke. Obviously the system can't cope with the number of applications and is crashing. How long before it's sorted.

  21. hang on in there, it is slow and frustrating , just got 2 entries completed. don't keep refreshing the page, it will get there eventually. I am not associated with this event and do find it a pain as you do.
