Jason Smyth...the double Gold Paralympian...

I'm sure most of you may have noticed that Jason Smyth won two Gold medals in the recent Paralympic Games in London. He finished in world record Paralympic times in the T13 100m and 200m.

In the 100m final, his time was 10.46 seconds...over half a second ahead of the second placed athlete in 11:02. In the 200m, he won in 21:05 seconds winning by a huge margin of nine tenths of a second. In sprinting terms, he really was in a completely different league compared to the other runners.

So just how fast is Jason Smyth? Competing with the City of Derry club, he is currently the second fastest Irish man ever over 100 metres. In May 2011, he ran the 100 metres in 10.22 seconds, just four one hundredths of a second away from the Irish national record held by Paul Hession.

In the 200m, he is only one of eight Irish men who have ever run under 21 seconds. He currently has the 7th fastest time.

8 20.95 Derek O'Connor 14.06.65 1 Cork IRL 21.07.85

Having just turned 25, Jason Smyth is still in his prime as a sprinter. With Paul Hession turning 30 next January, it's likely the title of Ireland's fastest man will soon pass to Jason Smyth or Stephen Colvert. Whether they manage to take Paul Hession's record is another issue.
