Olympic Racewalking events and rules...

During the Olympics, there are three race walking events with an Irish interest in each one...

Saturday 4th August
Evening...M 20k Walk Final...17.00 Rob Heffernan

Saturday 11th
Morning...M 50k Walk Final...9.00 Brendan Boyce, Colin Griffin, Rob Heffernan
Evening...W 20k Walk Final...17.00 Olive Loughnane, Laura Reynolds

While most people know the basic rule that one leg must be in contact with the ground at all times, some of the other rules may not be so clear. The IAAF have produced this simple document which helps explain some of the finer points of race walking.

By the way, the person who helped write it was Jane Saville from Australia. She was leading the 20k walk in the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and was disqualified just as she entered the stadium.
