The new year got off to a great start in Bandon with a large turnout for the Donough Coughlan Memorial 5 mile road race. A record field of 278 runners turned out, up 43% on the figure for last year.
The mens race was won by Tim Twomey of Leevale AC in a time of 26:26. The battle for second place was a much closer affair with only three seconds separating Ian O'Leary of Donore Harriers (26:51) and Danny Smith of Ballynonty AC (26:54). In the womens race, Lizzie Lee of Leevale AC was the clear winner in a time of 27:53. Again, there was a battle for the second spot with only two seconds between Carmel Crowley (29:25) of the host club, Bandon AC and Jill Hodgins (29:27).

Just one fault with todays race in Bandon, a good mile walk back from finish point to gaa grounds. In bitter wind and rain this put a dampner to say the least on an otherwise very enjoyable run!
ReplyDeleteWeel organised, well stewarded and a good challenging course.
ReplyDeleteAnyone have the same result as myself..Garmin Forerunner 110 shows 4.96 miles for race ???
ReplyDeleteyeah i have it as under 5 miles on the garmin. well organised race, that hill on mile 3 was great!!! the walk back was a tough alright ;-) just add it onto your daily mileage for the day ;-) will be back next year
ReplyDeleteYes my garmin had the exact same 4.96 miles. Great race loved the course will be back next near for deffinate.
ReplyDeletevery good race, well organised and a good challenging course.will be back next year.Great stuff Bandon A.C.
ReplyDelete4.96 miles on my garmin. I paid ten euro entry fee and there was no water at the finish line.
ReplyDeleteBandon GAA was a great HQ. I'd say the distance from finish to HQ was no greater than many other races. My garmin was 5.02, as was the only other competitor I asked. Anyway, even at 4.96, surely 0.04 of a mile, (less than 100 metres) won't put anyone up or down. A great race, the hill came at a good stage on mile 2, there was plenty time to compensate. Well done to Bandon AC, here's to another substantial increase in competitors in 2013. I'll be back!
ReplyDeletegreat race used the run back as my cool down. well organised friendly stewards great food in gaa hall.Well done Bandon A.C.
ReplyDeleteGreat race and great start to the year. Very enjoyable. My Garmin showed bang on 5 miles. Can't believe someone is whinging about a mile back to the GAA. Ever hear of a warm down? And if you are complaining about wind and rain why didn't you just stay at home in bed?!! This is running in Ireland in the middle of Winter!! What do you expect ? Thanks to all involved in organizing today's event.
ReplyDeleteLove this race, favourite course with the gradual downhill for last 2 miles. Just wish more races had the finish a bit of a distance from the HQ - ensures there's a few sambo's left for the people doing a warmdown :) 4.99miles on Garmin
ReplyDeleterace was 5 miles spot on according to my garmin. for the vast majority there was water at the finish line cups and bottles maybe not enough for the unexpected high turnout do. great race excellently run you'd know tom laffans paws were all over it ;)
ReplyDelete@Anon. It cost you upwards of 250 euro for a garmin watch which clearly doesn't work. That's surely a bigger worry.
ReplyDeleteTry taking your garmin onto the track and see if it says its 400m first.
GPS watches are well known to have trouble with hills and any manner of tree coverage. This course is hilly and is set on country roads.

Real tactical race now with the early downhill, middle uphill and last 2 miles downhill. Because I allowed for these, got myself a PB!! Not only a great course but also a reminder to beginners to run the race in your head beforehand. Passed about 20 /25 runners because they went out to soon. Well done Bandon AC.
ReplyDeletegutted i didn't get a PB. i allowed for the course beforehand but my garmin went flat before the race. time to go back to the weightsin the gym. very good race tho
