A total of 442 runners turned out for the Cork Half-Marathon in Blarney this year. In terms of the weather, there was a touch of the 'rub of the green' about it as the storm resulting from Hurricane Katia rolled across Ireland just a few hours later. As you can see from the photo above, there was plenty of sunshine for the race so conditions were a lot better than they could have been.
The winner of the mens race was Michael Herlihy of North Cork AC in a time of 1:10:09. Colin Merritt of Carrig na Bhfear finished 2nd in 1:11:43 with Donal O'Callaghan of An Riocht AC finishing 3rd in 1:14:40. In fact, the Kerry club based in Castleisland accounted for 4 of the top 10 finishers.
In the womens race, the 2011 Cork City Marathon winner Angela McCann from Clonmel AC made the trip back to Cork to win the Half-Marathon in Blarney in 1:23:10. Maria Carey of Ennis Track AC ran a great race to finish in 2nd place in 1:23:46, just 36 seconds behind Angela. In 3rd place, Tracey Roche from Dooneen AC in Limerick ran 1:24:57.

Great race, brilliantly organised as usual. Thanks to the 1.30 pace team, lads were excellent and brought a great spirit to the group.
ReplyDeleteSuper organisation! The spread in the hall afterwards was amazing - and such a fabulous atmosphere...And I was just a supporter for my hubby!
ReplyDeleteI have done this race for the last 5 years and it is one of my favourite races of the year. Tough course and a great indication on how marathon is going. Organisation as always for this race was brilliant. A pre-entry fee of €20 is good value for money and the 20% discount voucher is a great idea and would be welcome idea in other races.
ReplyDeleteHave to fully agree with all the above comments, i have done this race for a few years now, but really thought yesterday was flawless- plenty bottled water at stations, huge number of stewards, pacers, fantastic food and prompt results. Couldn't ask for more, well done St Finbarr's.
ReplyDeleteGreat race and plenty of water bottles everywhere great to see fair play!
ReplyDeleteFantastically run race. Literally zero complaints to be made about the race. Though did anyone get their race time texted to them?
ReplyDeleteAh yes, at last, water bottles en course! That alone was proof that this is a race organised by runners for runners. My second year doing this race and it is truly, as they say, unmissable! St Finbarr's Abu!
ReplyDeleteA great race, a great day and more importantly great value for money...
ReplyDeleteWhat more could we ask for... Thanks to all involved...
Just a suggestion at these Mid-distance races...
Its great having all these people giving up their time to give us water and more importantly their support along the way. We should hold on to our cups, bottles till the next station and throw them away in a designated area as we approach. I don't think its fair to expect these volunteers and sometimes their children to clean up after us.
On the subject of used bottles/cups...
ReplyDeleteCups will be usually discarded within 100 metres of the water station.
For bottles, some runners leave them at the next mile marker rather than just throwing them everywhere.
A very well organised race except for the amount of people who ignored the rule which was given to everyone with their numbers that "headphones were not allowed".Yet they chose to ignore this.I even saw a runner in a St Finbarrs vest wearing headphones. In any other sport these people would be banned from future events.
