Closing date for the MaxiMarathon is next Friday 1st July...

For anyone interested, the closing date for this unique 15 mile road race in Kerry is coming up on Friday, the 1st of July.

Basically, it is a largely downhill course which starts near Molls Gap which looks across at the highest mountians in Ireland and finishes down near Muckross House in Killarney National Park. The route which is part of the Ring of Kerry will be closed to traffic for this event so this is the only time in the year that it is possible to run on this road.

More details on the Running in Munster website or you can enter by visiting the race website......http://www.maximarathonkillarney.com/index.php

  1. Hi,

just reading the preview there and it says "The route which is part of the Ring of Kerry will be closed to traffic for this event so this is the only time in the year that it is possible to run on this road."

Have never done the race before so I was planning on doing 13 miles of it next week just to see what the course is like. Is there any reason for this?is it just that little bit dangerous?

  2. Outside of the MaxiMarathon, I would have serious reservations about running or even walking on this road. Very busy....loads of tour buses....narrow with no hard shoulder...lots of blind bends.

It's more than just a 'little bit dangerous'. What's the point in running on a road where you have to be constantly watching the traffic?

For suitable runs.....try the National Park near Muckross House which has no traffic or the quieter roads out by the start of the MaxiMarathon and away from the main Killarney/Kenmare road.

  3. Hi,

I signed up for this race over a month ago and looking forward to it. I was wondering if anybody who ran it last year could give some tips? I know the last 3 miles have been changed to avoid hills...a nice relief!! I was hoping to catch the bus from Killarney at 6am so that I don't have to drag my poor husband out of bed at that ungodly hour:) I will probably drive the route the day before to see what it holds instore.
    Thanks!!

  4. Thanks for the information John, thats that plan out the window so!!

I mainly just want to see how fast the course is more than anything. Heard it is pretty fast so I'm trying to estimate what pace I should be start at.

Anyone have any idea how much faster it is than say a flat course. My half marathon PB pace is about 7:20 on the bandon half marathon course. do you think it wouldnt be too unreasonable to maybe do bring this down to 7:10? or even a little less maybe?

  5. Hi Anonymous,

You say on your first post that you were planning on doing 13 miles of the run. Why not relax about your pace and make your goal to do the full 15 miles? Just a thought:)
