Just a note to say that the Cork City Marathon have extended their closing date for the Marathon and Marathon Relay event until Monday the 16th of May. Entry details can be found on the Cork Marathon website HERE
Please note that the numbers for the Half-Marathon were limited and entries for that event closed some time ago.
They have also announced the start times of the various races. The full Marathon and Relay event will start on Patrick's Street at 9am on Monday, the 6th of June. The Half-Marathon race will start from Mahon at 11:30am. This will mean that the Half-Marathon runners should be merging with the Marathon runners going for a 5 hour time. In that case, the bulk of the Marathon field should have passed once the Half starts. It also means that if you are doing the Half then you should be passing Marathon runners from there until the finish line. If you are doing a 4 hour plus Marathon, the Half-Marathon runners are likely to pass you before the finish line in Patricks Street.
Considering that there are loads of people getting passed anyway with the Relay runners taking part, I'm not sure if it will make any real difference?
I feel the time for the start of the half is too late.We will be running in the hottet part of the day.Seeing that relay runners will be passing marathon runners, I dont think an earlier start would have caused a problem
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with previous. It is a bit late if its a good day.
ReplyDeleteAlso if it started and ran for a few miles before joining the marathon then it would all have settled down. What they are attempting to do will cause chaos at the split area near Blackrock Castle. The strung out marathon runners will be lost in the half marathon group as they will still be in a big pack.
The timings are adjusted so that the winner of the half marathon will not be across the line before the winner of the marathon. In this case, the marathon winner will just be finished by the time the half starts. Perhaps a bit late for the half to start. Its a balance between starting the full too early, and the half too late, together with predicted bottleneck points etc. Given the courses, there isn't much wriggle room. Sure we'll see what happens in 4 weeks....
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with comment #1, why leave it so late, if it is a day like 2 years ago then temperature could be a big issue. CCM is strung out from about mile 4, as the numbers running are small (in relative terms), so why have the half merging so late, also from a point of view of pacing, I think it would benefit people looking for a 3-4:00hr time to have more company, it gets very lonely from Model farm road on. Unless it is to avoid confusion at the finish line? will they have 3 different chutes
ReplyDeleteThere's obviously some aspects of the Half-Marathon that people have issues with.
ReplyDeletePerhaps next week, I might put up a post with some diagrams and we can tease it out a bit further then.
A lot of people may not see the comments about the half here under the entry post.
I like the model used in Vienna where everyone starts together and the halfer's finish early which is probably do-able in Cork as the route almost resembles a figure of 8.
ReplyDeleteI think the full Marathon runners must be favoured, have done Connemarathon full 4 times, and if you're not through half way running 3 hour pace, you are toast......
ReplyDeleteCan anyone recommend a running specific physio in cork?
ReplyDeleteHave some niggles I want to clear that my current physio isn't sorting and I'm doing the CCM in 3 weeks and beginning to brick it!
Cheers
