There was a record entry of 749 runners for the Mallow 10 Mile road race today in what were almost perfect conditions. This race has seen a huge increase in numbers compared to just a few years ago. Back in 2002/2003, it was just another road race and the numbers were no better than a lot of other shorter local races at the time.
Fast forward to 2011 and a lot of hard work put in by Mallow AC over the years and you have a race that is attracting over 700 runners. As you can see from the graph above, there was a big jump this year. How long before it breaks the 1,000 mark???
Another new feature this year was the introduction of pacers for 70, 80 and 90 minutes. While they are now a common feature in Marathons and some Half-Marathons, this is the first time that I have heard of pacers in a 10 mile event.
Now that the race is over, did you think the pacers were a good idea? Did you find them useful?

Pacers was a great idea,i achieved sub 80 delighted.
ReplyDeletei agree with the last comment,in just under the 70 mins
ReplyDeleteIt was a great day, I ran with the 80min boys for 9 miles and they pushed us to do the last on our own and finished in 78:50.
ReplyDeleteya pacers are a great idea ...i think more well organized water stations would have helped ..great day for it alright
ReplyDeleteI think the pacer makers was a fantastic idea
ReplyDeletefare play to Mallow AC for professional organised race.
My hat goes off to them.
Yeah pacers where a great idea was well organized i travel up from waterford to run and will def come back only thing i would change is hav small bottle's of water at the water stations instead of the cups to hard to drink out of cups when ur racing thanks again lads
ReplyDeleteJust on the subject of water bottles...From an organisers point of view, there are 2 advantages to cups...
ReplyDelete1) Cost
2) A used cup is disposed of near the water station and is easy to clean up.
The problem with water bottles is that they can be carried and end up getting dumped everywhere.
I thought the pacers were a great addition to the race. They definitely helped me to push myself a bit harder but I fear I will have nightmares about red balloons in the distance for the next few nights!
ReplyDeleteWeather conditions were perfect and the race was in general well organised – refreshments in the hall afterwards were great and the beanie hat is nice. But some of the on-course layout and marshalling could have been better.
1. The turn left from the local road on to the N20 around mile 2 to 3. There were bollards along the line of the hard-shoulder but due to large numbers of people running these bollards became hidden to a lot of runners. I saw one runner take a very heavy fall and it was lucky that other runners didn’t also fall over him.
2. After I had finished I went down along the footpath from the finish line to cheer on the other runners and to wait for my friend. There is a business park to the left hand side and on three different occasions I saw cars turning left into the park right in front of runners as they were coming up the home straight. Dangerous driving on behave of the drivers but it was amazing that there was no marshal or Garda halting/directing traffic.
i take john's point about the water. for a mile you shouldn't need that much a couple of sips should do it. the point about the traffic is a valid one- obviously mallow ac can't shut down the road but some of the driving by motorists was hairy at times. one guy in a motor bike came in very close to me- i think he thought the inside running lane was a shortcut!!! ;-)anyway i got a PB very happy with that 1.12.25- ran out of steam the last two miles but very happy
ReplyDeleteenjoyed the race but as it was my first time taking part in the race, there was very poor information or signs where registration was located, was driving around town for a long time, before i found the place.
ReplyDeleteI think the verdict is pretty clear that overall it was a great day - the weather, jovial spirits of runners and excellent organisation by Mallow AC all contributed.
ReplyDeleteHaving had some experience organising events held on public roads it is really difficult for all roads/slipways/house & shop entrances to be monitored. Drivers on the whole give runners space but there will always be some dodgy moments. The trick is to minimize the possibilities of something going wrong. Organisers yesterday did a fine job by what I saw. Runners need to take some responsibility for their actions also. I for one on a ignored some clear instruction from a steward and cut a corner or two.
On the water:
While cups are not the best as John pointed out they are cheap and as environment friendly as it gets.
If the aim was to please the vast majority then I think this race did just that. The pacers were a novel idea for a shorter distance race.
Mallow should now aim to keep this weekend every year. January weather is just too unpredictable.
....
Very good race & well organised. Too bad the 60 min pacer got injured, would have been tempted to try and stay with him although think it would be beyond my ability!
ReplyDeleteWould be great if it could be on this weekend from now as much nicer weather than in Jan.
Please please please keep this weekend instead of freezing in January. 3 of the last 6 have been cancelled on original date. That tells its own story....!
ReplyDeleteSpring classics not Winter torture
Thanks a million Mallow AC for a great organised race.
ReplyDeleteThe pacers were a fantastic idea and were great encouragement to get your PB.
Will be there again next year...
This was my first race since starting running 9 months ago so pacers were not an issue for me, this year anyway. Finished in 1hr 49mins though so was thrilled. Organisation was fantastic!! Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeletePacers were a great idea and have to agree with keeping race in march from now on instead of jan
