Comedian Des Bishop launches Great Island 10 Mile Race...

Comedian Des Bishop was on hand to launch a charity event in Cobh for the Irish Cancer Society, a cause that is close to his heart, even though he had just received news that his father Michael had died. Des was appearing at the Cork Opera House and carried on like a true professional despite hearing the sad news. Michael Bishop had been suffering from lung cancer for some time.

The second annual ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ will take place on 17th April 2011 at 1pm. and once again it is being arranged for the benefit of the Irish Cancer Society and for Palliative Care in particular. Up to 500 runners ran through the streets and roads of Cobh and the Great Island last year raising €35,000. This year an even bigger entry is anticipated.

“There are few of us who have not been touched by the scourge of cancer and statistics suggest that very few of us are likely to escape completely”, Eamon Crotty of the organising committee said. “Palliative care is something none of us wants to experience but it is also something that has to be witnessed to be fully appreciated. It offers cancer sufferers the opportunity to spend their remaining time in the relative comfort of their own homes surrounded by those they care most about and ensuring the dignity and privacy that only a home can offer. It is impossible to put a price on such a service”.

The ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ will take place on the 17th April beginning at 1pm and a 5k walk will also take place at 12.30 pm on the same day for those less inclined to run. Sponsorship cards are available from sonyaomurphy@gmail.com and she can also be contacted on 0877904895.

  1. This is a great cause and a very well organised event - the course is demanding and as usual there is a great finish in the town.. I would highly recommend this race to anyone looking for a challenge.

  2. This is a fantastic race. Unfortunately I won’t be able to run it this year but really enjoyed it last year. Plenty of hills but to be honest it a lovely course.
