Race News and Looking ahead...

Race cancellations...It's pretty obvious that at this time of year, it's just a matter of luck as to whether a race goes ahead or not. The Clonakilty Marathon & Half-Marathon went ahead during a lull in the cold weather....one week either side and it would probably have been called off. The race in Bandon went ahead on Sunday the 2nd of Jan yet one week later, Mallow was cancelled when it was obvious that the roads would be like glass.

So far, we have had 3 races cancelled.....the Newmarket to Kanturk 5 mile, the Belgooly 4 mile and the Mallow 10 mile....and we still have the rest of January and February to get through. Will there be more? Whatever about the small races, it's obvious that it is a lot of work trying to re-schedule one of the larger events. For the moment, no new dates have been fixed yet for the above 3 races.

Looking ahead....Weather permitting, there are no shortage of races coming up here in Cork or in the rest of Munster.
Sat 15th....The Waterford Half-Marathon is going ahead at 12 noon. This race was originally supposed to take place in early December but had to be cancelled due to the heavy snowfall. It basically starts in Waterford city, takes in a small loop inside the the town, heads south to Tramore and returns on the same road to finish in Waterford city again. Entries are still open for this race. More details later in the week on the Running in Munster website.

Sun 23rd......The Cork BHAA races kick off a new season again with a 4 mile race in Little Island. This always attracts a big crowd as it is the first short race of the year for many. There will be a preview here just before it.

Sun 30th.......The Dungarvan 10 mile road race in West Waterford has gone from strenght to strenght in recent times and is likely to attract in excess of 1000 runners. This was going to be the 2nd race in the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series but it is now the first one by default with the cancellation of the Mallow '10'. No doubt many people had planned to avail of the Dungarvan '10' entry desk at the Mallow 10 race but that wasn't to be. You can still enter online and you have until the 17th of Jan to get your entries in. More info on the Running in Munster website.

Race Calendars....The Cork Race Calendar and the Munster Race Calendar have now been updated and as you can see, there is no shortage of races, especially if you are prepared to travel. If you spot any errors or know of any more events then please let me know and I'll add them.

  2. Hi Terry

The closing date for overseas entries was Monday the 10th of Jan. I presume once they are processed, they will then be releasing the final list of all entries. If it is anything like the first list then I presume something might be out within a week or so.
