This event in Ballynoe consisted of a 5 mile road race for men and a 2 km road race for women. As expected, the fields were pretty small and consisted mainly of local runners.
Race Report by Donal O'Donoughue.......
It was a little damp, more so during the Ladies 2000m, but things cleared up somewhat by the time the Men's 5 mile started. There were 18 ladies - double last year. There were 31 men - the same number as last year. This was mainly an East Cork clubs event, with a few independent runners like me taking part.
It's still got that short but incredibly steep hill, which the Ladies do once, but the men do four times.
The course was marked at each mile, and somebody had even taken the time to draw white circles around the few potholes on the course. Nice :-)
John Walshe had the results in double-quick time.
The winner of the Ladies and the Men's event each received a silver cup, and there were medals for 2nd, 3rd. East Cork AC cleaned up, taking 8 out of the top 10 places, and also won the team prize, despite the fact that individual winners did not count in the Team prizes. Midleton AC had a big turnout too, and came second in the team category. Youghal AC were third.
Teas, sandwiches, buns and fruit cake at the Community Centre finished off a very enjoyable evening.
On a sad note, I see that Eircom have put a note on the public Telephone Box in Ballynoe, saying this facility is about to be removed. We need to get a preservation order placed on this phone box. It's our finish line!!.......Donal O'Donoghue

Thanks for the report Donal and I know you did not mean to be Sexist but we here in Midleton AC are very proud of our ladies and you neglected to mention that Midleton AC won the ladies event with a superb run by Michelle Nolan (Ladies Capt) and Midleton ladies also got First Team with Sally Drennan,Caroline Geary and Christine Murphy closely followed by our second team of Anne Marie Perry,Yvonne Fitzgerald and Elaine Hennessy.Which in any clubs books is a great result and one of which we are extremely proud.
ReplyDeleteDanny Mc Carthy Capt Midleton AC
PS It is worth noting there was not a headphone in sight on the night.
Hi John,
ReplyDeleteJust would like to echo Danny's comment and also congratulate both our Ladies and Men's teams for the efforts we as a club put in last Thursday evening in the East Cork Club Championships in Ballynoe,And also to East Cork Ac,Youghal Ac and to the other athlete's that turned up on the night to make this event a very enjoyable occasion for both Male and Female entrants,Would also like to thank the ladies who done a wonderful job on the after's for a lovely spread, organizer's and supporter's who were their in numbers keeping us running up that steep hill.
Please support Midleton Ac 5 mile road race on May 7th at 8.00pm please see flyer on this blog for further info.
Regards
John Dunphy
Midleton Ac.
Hi Danny,
ReplyDeleteYou're quite right, the Midleton AC Ladies team did very well, with 12 out of 18 runners in the race.
Or should I say 13, as you appeared to run with the Ladies too?
I hadn't looked too closely at the Ladies results on the wall on the night.
I actually sent in my report to the Blog before the results went online.
Well done Midleton AC!
Donal
ps: I hope you're not still feeling sore that I managed to get ahead of you on the final hill climb ;)
The other "sexist" issue here, is that the Ladies run only 2000m, which is a quarter of the 5-miles/8000m that the men run.
ReplyDeleteThe Ladies only get one chance to do "the hill", but the men have to do it four times.
It's just not fair!
See the IAAF site. The Ladies did 3000m, while the men did 5000m on the track, up to 1995.
Then the Ladies were moved up to 5000m too.
Equality!
