Back around the start of August, I was looking through the race calendar at the upcoming long races and deciding which ones I might do. There were 4 obvious choices...National Half Marathon in Waterford (7th Sept), Cork Half (14th Sept), Cork to Cobh 15 mile (5th Oct) and the Dublin City Marathon (27th Oct). At the time, I decided on two......1) the National Half Marathon in Waterford because it may be years before it is so close to Cork again and 2) Cork to Cobh. Now 6 weeks later, it looks like I'll end up doing all 4 as I ended up doing the Cork Half after all and I have sent off my entry for the Dublin Marathon!! ;o) So this brings me neatly on to the 2 main points of this post...
1) Late entries.......After doing Waterford on the 7th, I was not sure if I would do the Cork Half on the 14th so I didn't bother pre-entering. In fact, I only made up my mind to do it at around 9:50am that morning ;o) When I got there, loads of other runners were entering on the day as well. There is nothing wrong with that except that it make life a bit difficult for the organisers as the entries take time to process and they are under pressure to get the race started on time. I was speaking to Mick Dooley of the Cork BHAA about this for the Cork to Cobh race and for them, entries on the day are even more of an issue. The thing is that they have to get t-shirts and goodie bags for everyone ready. If a lot of people enter on the day, they find it hard to estimate how many are needed. So, it will be a big help to them if you can get your entry off to Kevin Cummins asap. The entry form is HERE. Print it out and get those entries off.
2) Pace for the Cork to Cobh race........I sure that a lot of you who intend on doing Cork to Cobh will also be doing the Dublin Marathon 3 weeks later. Perhaps it is a little bit too close to actually race it but surely it is an ideal opportunity to try out that pace that you intend to use in the Marathon? If after all, you can run 15 miles at that pace and still feel comfortable at the finish, it bodes well for the full distance. If however, you get to Cobh exhausted then it tells you that you need to set a more realistic target.
The price for pre-entries is €15 and that includes a t-shirt. The closing date for pre-entries is next Friday, the 26th of September. Post them now.
