Results of the Churchtown South 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 24th July 2008
A huge crowd of 323 turned out for this one, the 3rd race of 4 in the Ballycotton Summer Series of 5 mile road races. I'm not sure but perhaps that was a record entry for this race?

Photos...There are 2 sets of photos now up on the net.
The 1st set of 98 were taken by John Quigley of Eagle AC and can be found at this LINK.
The 2nd set of 288 photos have been put up on the net by Paudie Birmingham of Mallow AC. You can find that set at this LINK.

Overall positions...
If you have managed to do all of the first 3 races in the series, you can find your overall position HERE.

Comments...
"How great is it to see an ever increasing number of RUNNERS taking part in so many races. If you take a look at the results of any race the number of people who run 9 min+ miles has risen greatly, possibly due to the fact that us slower runners have finally realised that you don't have to be an elite (or aspire to be one) to race, we have worked up the courage to wear the gear and join the pack. I am of the belief that anyone who takes part should be congratulated, we're not going to win prizes but every time I cross the finish line is as good as any prize. Well done all, fast or not so fast!..........Anonymous"

Preview of the Churchtown South 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 24th of July (8pm)
The 3rd race in the Ballycotton Summer series takes place next Thurdsay evening, the 24th of July at 8pm. Going on recent races, I'd expect that they should get between 250 and 300 for this one.
Directions...If you are new to the local race scene, try the following route. From Cork, take the usual route to Ballycotton (...shown above in Yellow). When you get to the centre of Cloyne, the main road takes a 90 degree left. You need to take the turn off which is straight ahead past the old round tower. Just stay on this road (...shown above in Orange), follow the signposts for Ballycotton and you will end up in Churchtown South.

Entries...The event centre for this race is the small community hall which is located next to the road junction on the Cloyne side of the village. Inside, there will be 2 queues....
Queue 1)...Any runner who ran the first 2 races of the Ballycotton Summer Series (Ballyandreen ‘5’ & Shanagarry '5') is automatically entered for Churchtown South. The race number corresponds with the runners’ overall position after the first two races. The full list can be seen at this LINK. Please join the correct queue in the hall and ask for your number from the list, which will also be posted on the wall.
Queue 2)...Any new runners can enter as normal. This is not a BHAA race, so if you are not a member of an athletics club just say where you are from (Cork, Charleville, Cloyne). The entry fee is €5 and having the correct amount ready helps to speed up the process. It also helps if you can try and get there early so they have plenty of time to get everyones details onto the laptop.

Course...It is roughly 2 laps of a 2.5 mile course. When you run the course, you would think that it should be a fast course as there seem to be very few hills. However, while there are no obvious steep hills like Ballyandreen or Shanagarry, there are some long drags in it which have the same net effect. For my money, it is as tough a course as either of the first two in the series.

Planning ahead to some of the longer races...
I'm sure some of you might be thinking about doing the Dublin City Marathon at the end of October and may have already started your training schedules by now. There are 2 road races in Cork coming up in September and October which are excellent preparation for this event. Even if you are not doing Dublin, perhaps you might be interested in training for these events anyway.

1) The Cork Half-Marathon (13.1 miles) takes place in Blarney on Sunday, the 14th of September. The usual training schedule for a half-marathon is 10 weeks. Considering that we now have 8 weeks to go and if you are already running on a regular basis, it's not too late to start. You can find an entry form at this LINK.

2) The Cork BHAA 'Cork to Cobh' 15 mile road race takes place on Sunday, the 5th of October. This is 3 weeks after the Cork Half-Marathon and you should have no problem doing both if you want to.

So if you are new to the running scene, now is the time to start looking at those schedules and getting ready.
Hear Ye...Hear Ye...Announcement for all race organisers
If you have been following this blog for a while, you will notice that I usually preview the local road races about 1 day before the race takes place. There is no point in doing it any earlier as the information will just get lost as newer posts push it further down the page.
Recently, I had added links for the various race flyers on the blog. They are shown in the right hand column of this page. So, for any of you involved in organising road races, why not send on your race flyers to me. If you don't already have them on your own club website, I can put them up on one of my websites and I can put the link on the blog. These links can be put up weeks /months before a race takes place and is there for everyone to see. You will find my e-mail address near the bottom of the right hand column on this site.

Request for some old Kinsale 5m results...
Someome asked me if it was possible to get a copy of the results of the Kinsale 5 mile race from 2003. I don't know if there were any printed results of that race but if you have a copy, you might send me a mail or just leave a comment here (...my e-mail address is shown on the right hand side of this page).
Results of the Donoughmore 7 Mile Road Race - Fri 18th July 2008
A total of 208 runners turned out for this popular race in Donoughmore on what was a lovely Summers evening. It has been a number of years since I last ran this race so while I had a rough idea of the course, I had forgotten a lot of it.There is no doubt about it but it is a tough course. Those last 2 miles are a real test as you have to climb all of the way from the crossroads on the main road. But having said that, those hills are exactly what makes the course interesting. This was no 5k sprint, it was a race where you needed pace and stamina to get a good time. In a Summer full of short races, the Donoughmore 7 stands out as one of the best races of the season.

Photos...John Quigley of Eagle AC was busy with his camera at the race and took 193 photos. You can see these on the Eagle AC website.

So, on to the results......

Preview of the Donoughmore 7 Mile Road Race - Fri 18th of July (8pm)
The 26th Donoughmore 7 Mile road race will be held next Friday evening at 8pm. For anyone who has not done this race before, here are the directions...

Directions...Donoughmore is about 15 miles NW of Cork City. If you are coming out the Ballincollig bypass or the Carrigrohane straight, look for directions for Nad / Banteer / Kanturk. If you follow the signposts, you should end up on the N579 road. Stay on this road for about 10 miles and keep a lookout for the turn off right to Donoughmore. The village is about 2 miles off the N579 road. See map above. If in doubt, click on the link below for the course map and zoom out and adjust to examine the route.

Course....From what I remember of it, it is a tough enough course. Plenty of hills but nothing too serious. Some people may find 7 miles to be a bit long but it is only three quarters of a mile beyond the 10 km distance so it's not so bad. The race is on quiet country roads and if you get a nice sunny Summers evening, there are nice views of the Boggeragh Mountains nearby. The only busy section is the 2.5 miles along the N579 road but it should be ok. To have a closer look at the course, check out this link.......http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/578270511

They usually get about the 200 mark at this race. Entry fee is €10 but for that, you get a T-Shirt and there is an impressive array of prizes on offer for all the different categories. Last year, they got 218 entries and if the weather is fine, they should get a similiar number if not greater this year.
You can see last years results HERE.
The flyer for the race is HERE and the Press Release for the race is HERE.
Comments...

Looking ahead to the road races in Cork and Munster this week - Mon 14th to Sun 20th of July
Considering the busy schedule of Summer road races, this week is a bit unusual in that there is nothing mid-week. The first race is the Donoughmore 7 mile at 8pm on Friday. Donoughmore is about 25 kms North West from Cork City in the foothills of the Boggeragh Mountains. I'll preview the race here on Thursday. In the meantime, you should be able to see the race flyers and Press release on the right hand side of this page.

Elsewhere in Munster on Friday evening, there is a 10km race in Pilltown (Co.Kilkenny...I know, it's Leinster!), just to the North West of Waterford City. On Saturday, there is a 5km race associated with the festival in Killarney, Kerry. I will provide a little bit more info about those races later in the week on the Running in Munster blog.

How to leave a comment on this website....
Someone mentioned to me recently that they wanted to contribute to one of the recent debates and did not know how to leave a comment. So, a quick explanation on what to do...

Underneath every post, you should see something like what is shown above. Just click on the link marked '- comments'. You should then be taken to a new page where you can type in your comments in the box shown. Underneath, you wil be given 4 options...

Click on the 1st option if you have a Google or Gmail account.
Forget about the 2nd option.
For the 3rd option, you can just type in your name. The URL part is for the address of your own website/blog if you have one.
The 4th option is to click on the Anonymous button. You can always click on this and just leave your name after your comment if you want to.
Once you click 'Publish Your Comment', an e-mail will be sent to me to say that a comment has been left and requires my approval to be published. As long as the comment is relavent, I nearly always publish it.
Confused?? Any questions??.......then leave a comment!! ;o)

Races this weekend...11th to 13th of July 2008
There are no shortage of races this weekend if you are prepared to travel a bit. On Friday the 11th, there is a 5 mile road race in Dungarvan in West Waterford. On Saturday the 12th, there is a charity 10km run up in Bunratty in Co.Clare and on Sunday the 13th, there are 2 races. A 5 mile race in Fermoy and a 10km charity run in Ballydavid near Dingle in West Kerry.
You can see a preview of the Fermoy race below. For more information on the other races, go to the Running in Munster blog.

Preview of the Fermoy 5 Mile Road Race...Sun 13th July (1pm)
Sign on for this race is at the Fermoy Youth Centre which is right alongside the Blackwater River. It is organised by Grange Fermoy AC, the entry fee is €10 and all proceeds go to the Blackwater Sub Aqua Club. Parking is very limited near the centre although there is a public car park about 400 metres away in the centre of the town. Try this LINK to see where exactly the Youth Centre is.

Directions...If you are coming from Cork, turn off at Watergrasshill and take the old road into Rathcormac and Fermoy. Right in the centre of Fermoy at the main road juction with the traffic lights, you should see a sign for parking up to the right. Park up here and walk back towards the river and the leisure centre.
Course......The start and finish is outside the leisure centre. Mile 1 and 2...You run left over the main bridge (on the footpath), left at the next road junction and then left on the main Fermoy to Mallow road. It is one section where you need to be careful as the field will be bunched, the main road is busy and there can be plenty of pedestrians on the footpaths. Once you are on to the Mallow road, the field will begin to thin out. There are some small inclines on this road but I can't remember anything too serious. It's more of a gentle climb.
Mile 3...Probably the best mile of the course. It's nice to get off the main road and onto nice quiet country roads. Reasonably flat as well.
Mile 4...Back on to a reasonably busy road and there is a gradual fall as you head back towards the town.
Mile 5...A good drop at the start as you rejoin the main road again, back into the town, right over the bridge and the right towards the finish by the leisure centre.

Last year they got 82 entries. You can see the 2007 results here if you want to check your previous time.

If you want to have a closer look at the route, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'EMC' 5 km Road Race - Wed 9th July 2008
A big crowd turned out for this one, not exactly sure how many but it looked like it might be around the 300 mark. Certainly, the start area on the main road seemed to be very packed. Listening to some of the times after the race, it certainly is not a fast course and going up that hill twice slows everyone down. Yet despite the hills, it is still a nice course with some nice running along quiet roads.

Photos....John Quigley of Eagle AC made a welcome return with his camera and took 285 shots of the race. They show runners reaching the corner by the top of the hill first time round and runners at the finish line. The photo above shows the race leaders approaching the top of the hill for the first time.
The link for the photos is HERE.
Results...The full results are now available HERE.
Comments...
"I would like to just say thanks to John Quigley of Eagle AC for the great work in taking all the photos and going to the effort in putting them up. It really is a nice touch...........Rob"
(By the way, the headphone debate continues HERE. John Quigley has just left a very detailed arguement as to why he is opposed to them)

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'EMC' 5km Road Race - Wed 9th of July (8pm)
The sign on for this race is at the Eire Og GAA grounds in Killumney, Ovens. Last year, they had an entry of 261 so going on recent numbers, I would expect that they should break the 300 mark? Looking at the weather forecast, it looks like the worst of the weather will have passed by Wednesday morning and there may be just showers in the evening time.

Directions...If you coming from the City, take the Ballincollig bypass. At the end of the bypass, you pass the EMC plant on your left, the road narrows and you then need to take the next left. You will see a pub at this junction ('Desmonds Bar'). About 800 metres later, you come to the village of Killumney with an old church straight ahead. Take the right here and the Eire Og grounds are on the right just up the road. There is usually plenty of parking inside the grounds. See the map below. The Red mark shows the finish where the GAA grounds are.

Entries...As per normal at BHAA races, there will be 2 queues, one for registered (€5) and one for non-registered runners (€7).

Course...The course is basically a one and a half lap loop. The start is 1 mile from the GAA grounds so you can use this as part of your warm up. Just follow everyone else and head for the start which is on the N22 Cork to Macroom road. Ok, it's not the nicest of starts with the heavy traffic but as soon as the race starts, you are back on to quiet roads again after a few hundred metres. When you do the 2nd loop, you will be using the hard shoulder which is fine as the crowd will have thinned out by then.
2 points to note......
1) The only hill / drag is near the road junction, just before the 1 and 3 mile mark. This is shown on the map as the point on the bottom left corner (South-West)
2) When you re-join the N22 near the pub (top right corner), the hard shoulder is very narrow here for about 100-200 metres and you need to be careful.
For a closer look at the course, check out the map at http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/559313385

Another new traffic record in June 2008 for the Running in Cork blog...
Traffic to this website hit another new high in June as the number of hits to the site almost reached the 10,000 mark. A lot of that activity was no doubt due to the Cork City Marathon but 10,000 hits in a month is still a serious figure. It's pretty amazing how fast the traffic has grown with the level roughly quadrupling since last December.
So, where are all the new visitors coming from?? I presume a lot are coming through to the site as a result of the Ballycotton 10 in March and the Cork City Marathon in June? All I can really say for certain is that the vast majority of the visitors (~90%) are from Ireland and most of them are probably in Cork and the surrounding counties.
Where to next?? I presume the traffic will drop a bit and level out? I've thought that before and was way off the mark. We'll see....
Video of the 2008 Cork BHAA 'Grandons' 5 Mile Road Race...
I found this video clip on my travels around the Internet ;o)
It shows the start of the Cork BHAA 'Grandons' 5 mile road race in June 2008 out around the half mile mark, just as the field begins to thin out. The clip is about 4 minutes long.

Races this weekend (Fri 4th to Sun 6th July)...There are no races in Cork this weekend but for anyone who is interested, there is a 5 km road race in Ballyneale which is just outside Carrick on Suir in South East Tipperary. This is the 2nd race in the 'Three Counties Challenge' and takes place tonight (Fri 4th of July) at 7:30pm. More details can be found on the Running in Munster blog.
Results of the Corkbeg 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 3rd July 2008

Splish...Splosh....Splash....Results of the Cork BHAA 'Stryker' 4 Mile Road Race - 2nd July 2008
The signs were ominous for this race....there were heavy showers all day and the sky above at 8pm had some very dark clouds. Yet it was bone dry as we started and it looked like as if we had got some of that East Cork luck as the rain held off. However, this was one race that was not organised by Ballycotton Running Promotions because just 15 minutes into the race, the heavens opened up. It was like something out of the Old Testament and Noah's flood as it poured down. I can honestly say that I never got so wet, so fast in a road race! Not that it slowed anyone down because wet or not, we were now more anxious than ever to finish ;o)

Photo shows the winner well ahead at about the 3.5 mile mark.

Results......The full results are available HERE.

Picture shows the 2nd man home at the 3.5 mile mark keeping a nice gap between himself and the chasing pack.

The chasing pack at the 3.5 mile mark.

Preview of Corkbeg 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 3rd July (8pm)
This 5 mile road race takes place in Corkbeg in East Cork at 8pm. Corkbeg is located about 1 km from the village of Whitegate on the Eastern side of the harbour. See the map above. If you are coming from Cork, take the N25 East and at the roundabout on the Midleton bypass, take the 3rd exit and keep going South to Whitegate. As you enter the village, you first pass the ESB power station and then the village itself. Just take the next small right hand turn and the start is a few hundred metres up this road. Entries for this race will be in the small wooden building just alongside the Pitch & Putt club. If you are unsure of where to go, click on the following link and use the + / - buttons to zoom IN / OUT and the MAP / SATELLITE buttons to change your view.

http://pininthemap.com/48805bbe91750abfa

Course...The start and finish point for this race is at the gates of the Oil Refinery. The first mile is very fast. You are running down a gentle downhill slope from the start all the ways until you get to Whitegate. The 1 mile mark is just where you start running uphill as you leave the village. Watch out for the stewards instructions here as you will need to cross to the other side of the road around here. The 2nd mile is a tough mile as you continue to run uphill past the ESB power station and then take a right turn and up an even steeper section to the 2 mile mark. The 3rd mile is a fast one. The road flattens out after 2 miles and soon, it drops sharply back down to the main road and then left with a flat section to the 3 mile mark. The 4th mile is more or less flat until you reach the 4 mile mark just after the power station. The 5th and final mile has a bit of a sting in the tail at the end as you need to run back up that gentle incline to the finish at the oil refinery gates.
Overall, a 5 mile race with a few drags but nothing heart stopping ;o)

If you want to have a closer look at the course, I have it up on the MapMyRun website...http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/559281907

If you have broadband, here are a few video clips from a time when we used to have Summers...

This short clip is taken around the 4.5 mile mark as you turn off right in Whitegate for the finish.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Stryker' 4 Mile Road Race - Wed 2nd July (8pm)
This 4 mile road race takes place in the East Cork town of Carrigtwohill at 8pm on Wednesday, the 2nd of July. Registration is in the Community Hall near the Eastern end of the town. If you are travelling from Cork, you have a choice of 2 slips roads to take for Carrigtwohill off the main N25 road as shown above. You can see exactly where the Community Hall is by clicking HERE and using the +/- buttons to zoom in and out. Try changing the 'View' to Satellite or Map to see if it makes it any clearer.
As per normal at BHAA races, there will be 2 queues in the hall. One for registered runners (€5 entry) and one for non-registered runners (€7). The start point for the race is about 400 metres away, up a small side road outside the local church.

The course...From the start outside the local church, you head along a straight stretch of road away from centre of the town. It is a section where you need to be careful as the field is still very bunched. However, by the time you get to the railway bridge, the field should have begun to thin. There is a sharp little incline at this bridge but once you are over it, it flattens out as you turn off left at the next road junction. Now the road begins to climb slowly until you turn off left and head West to the 1 mile mark. A tough enough start. The 2nd mile involves plenty of flat running with some downhill running also as you lose the height you gained earlier. After the 2 mile mark, you turn left onto a long straight. Up a slight incline at the end and out onto the old main road. You are then running inside the hard shoulder past where the old Youghal Carpets plant used to be onto the 3 mile mark. For the last mile, you carry on towards the small roundabout and back into the town. There is a slight climb before the finish but nothing too serious. The finish line is a short distance away from the Community Hall.

I have a copy of the route up on the MapMyRun website if anyone wants to check it out or get their bearings.

Overall...A reasonably flat fast course with no major hills as such. Last year, they got 319 entries on what was a dull dreary evening. This year, the weather forecast is for fine weather and I'd expect they will get in excess of 350 entries. It might be as well to get there early.
