Coming up on Sunday, the 22nd of April at 12 noon, there is a brand new 10k road race in Rathcormac just to the north-east of Cork City. With it's proximity to the M8 motorway, it should be within easy reach for a lot of runners. The course will be measured accurately by a Jones Counter and it has an Athletics Ireland license via Grange Fermoy AC. Showers available. Entry €10.
The start and finish are located very close to the local GAA grounds which serve as race hq for registration, prizegiving and refreshments afterwards. A quick look at the course shows some hills in the early stages but plenty of downhill running later on. It seems to be on reasonably quiet country roads and only goes through Rathcormac during the first mile. More details in a preview before the race.
Info from the organisers...All runners and walkers are welcome to Rathcormac Cork for the first Annual Bride 10K Run/Walk. If you are a budding Olympian or just want to try and shed a few pounds the Bride run is for you. The course has a climb for the first 4km after that it is mainly down hill or flat. The cost of the event is €10 per runner, entries will be also taken on the day from 10am -11.30am at Bride Rovers GAA club house. The race will start at 12.00 from Bride Rovers GAA grounds and will also finish there. Prizes will be offered to the first three men and women. There will also be prizes offered to the first two men and women in the following categories, U19's,40+,50+ and 60+. Refreshments will be provided at the GAA club house after the race.
With a twelve start, there is even an opportunity for a sunday morning lie in !
ReplyDeleteSo with Great island 10 mile on sun 15, Ballintotis 4 mile on thrs 19th and Rathcormac 10 K on Sunday April 22, a great weeks running for Cork runners.
Note the age category prizes, two only and only for 0-40, 50 and 60. While the entry fee is moderate (and welcome for that)this seems rather mean. If the BHAA can do three prizes for a much larger number of age categories and still make a modest profit this must say something about the organization of this Rathcormack race. I won't be going, partly because of this lack of category prizes.
ReplyDeleteThe BHAA races are often subsidised by the sponsor in terms of prizes and facilities so it's not a fair comparison.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first year of the race so they won't really know how much they will take in on the day. Speaking to the organisers, it sounds like a nice spot for a race.
It seems fairly common for only two prizes to be given for the over age groups. I would like to see a third as that is probably the only position I will aspire to but it wont stop me running. Just getting close to the top three would be tremendous for me. I do wonder why sometimes a fourth prize is given for the general category but am only curious rather than having a problem with it. I occasionally get a spot which is nice !
ReplyDeleteUp Early to Watch the London Marathon and then a 10 Minute cycle up to the GAA Club for Registration. Great day for the running addict, and Good Course from my experience of it!
