Next Weekend...Cork to Cobh...
The next big race locally is of course the Cork BHAA 'Cork to Cobh' 15 mile road race next Sunday at 9:30am. I hope to do a proper review of it on Thursday night but in the meantime, here is some info regarding the race...

The registration point for the race is in the Montenotte Hotel. They are likely to get well in excess of 500 entries so it's likely that a lot of people will enter on the day and there will probably be a big queue for this. To take off some of the pressure, you can also enter beforehand by ringing Kevin Cummins (021-4292509) or Michael Dooley (087-9790806). I presume that then on the morning of the race, you'll be able to join a shorter queue, just pay the €25 entry fee and collect your number?

Help Wanted...
Appeal for Stewards: Cork BHAA urgently require volunteers to assist with stewarding the race.If you or your family (over 18s) are available to help out on Sunday next please contact Chief Steward Timmy Murray at 086 1091782 as soon aspossible.

Follow up on the Womens Mini-Marathon...Sun 27th Sept 2009
No doubt there was another huge turnout for this charity walk/run which took place in dry weather conditions. From a runners point of view, I hear that there was no provision yet again this year to let the fast runners get to the front and let them start ahead of the walkers. Last year, people had to climb over barriers to try and get into position for a fast start.

Q.....Were you there? What did you think of the start? As a road race? The overall event?

Click on the Comment link below and give your opinion...

Looking at the comments already posted, it would seem that it was similar to last year....

Photos and Results....... (Updated 5th Oct 2009)
If there are any photos, I'll put the links up here if I get them.
1) There is a gallery of almost 600 photos up on the Eagle AC website.
2) There is a seperate gallery of 239 photos HERE.

As regards results....for the last 2 years, they have a supplement in the Evening Echo later in the week with a list of all participants. They only give the finishing positions and times for the top 100 women.

Preview of the 'Evening Echo Ladies Mini Marathon'...Sun 27th Sept (1pm)
This is essentially a 3.8 mile charity walk/run with a road race at the front of it. If you intend to race it then you need to get to the start early! There are somewhere in the region of 10,000 women taking part and going on previous years, the organisers aren't too worried about whether the faster runners can get to the front or not.

Course...The start of this race is on the Centre Park Road.

Mile 0-1....The first mile or so is very flat with only a slight uphill around the 0.8 mile mark as the road joins the Marina. This should be a very fast mile as long as you stay clear of the mass of runners/joggers/walkers/prams....etc.
Mile 1-2.....Dead flat along the Marina. Probably the most scenic part of the run. Again, it should be a very fast mile. If you have started too fast, this is about where you should find out. Pace yourself for the first 2, you can pick it up over the last 2 if you have gone too slow.
Mile 2-3....This section includes the only real hill. There is a nasty pull from the 2 mile mark up to St.Michael's church, a distance of about 300 metres. You are going to lose some time here. After that, it's reasonably flat with a slight fall downhill into Beaumount about the 2.7 mile mark. Then past the AIB bank and Post office and take a sharp right down Maryville Road. Around the 3 mile mark, there is a very steep downhill section. By far, the hardest mile.
Mile 3-3.8....After the initial downhill section, the remainder of the mile is flat with the finish on the Monaghan Road, near Kennedy Park.

Guest article.....When is a Marathon not a Marathon?

You may have noticed that from time to time, I have some material written by other people on this blog. So, with that in mind, I have already published some articles by David O'Dwyer of East Cork AC here on a regular basis. David covers various topics from a personal point of view and if you agree, disagree or would just like to add a comment, click on the Comments link below this post. I would just like to say thanks to David for allowing his articles to be published here on this site. Hope you enjoy it.............John Desmond.

The Marathon is currently enjoying somewhat of a revival in this country. The now well established Dublin Marathon attracts in the region of 10,000 participants each year and the recently revived Cork City Marathon is also attracting strong numbers. Marathons are also held in Connemara and Longford annually.

There are many reasons for this revival and the healthy number of participants but one of them is surely the welcome increase in the number of female participants. The womens “Mini Marathon” has no doubt helped in the promotion of the sport and has been hugely successful with huge numbers taking part each year. There is now a number of such events held throughout the country with the main events taking place in Limerick, Cork and Dublin.

The marathon distance of 26.2 miles is steeped in mythology and history as to how the exact distance has been established. Starting with the Greek soldier who ran from the town of Marathon to Athens(a distance of 26 miles) to announce that the Persians had been miraculously defeated in the Battle of Marathon. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping, but moments after proclaiming his message "Nenikekamen" ("We were Victorious!") to the city he collapsed dead from exhaustion. The current "official" distance of 26.2 miles for the marathon came from the marathon at the 1908 Olympic Games in London. The race was due to start in Windsor Castle and finish in White City Stadium. In order to facilitate the starting of the race by King Edward VII who had a cold and was under Doctors orders not to venture out the start was moved 385 yards to the courtyard of the Castle. Hence we now have the official race distance of 26.2miles for the marathon.

The term “Mini Marathon” is a relatively recent term and has been used to describe any distance from 4 miles up to a Half Marathon. The term should be banned! To complete a marathon is a significant achievement and as anyone who has done so it is not something that can be described as “easy” or completed without a significant amount of training. It takes hours of dedication and hard work and is not something that can be undertaken lightly or over a short period of time. To say that you have completed a marathon is a claim that should not be diluted in any way. It is a small step to claim to have completed a “Mini Marathon” to dropping the “Mini” when in fact all that has been achieved is a 4 mile event! 4 miles or even 10k is a distance that can be completed with a relatively small amount of training over a short period of time. Anyone who has completed a “Mini Marathon” and claimed to have run a Marathon is not only kidding themselves but they are insulting the millions who have completed the Marathon worldwide. I am not suggesting that this claim is a widespread phenomenon but it is something that does occur.

As I understand it the Womens “Mini Marathon” is some distance between 4 miles and 10k. What’s next 5k? How can one justify using the word marathon with such a short distance? Why not call it what it is? If the use of the term “Womens Mini Marathon” achieves anything it is the implicit suggestion that women are not capable or should not be allowed to complete the full Marathon. In other words leave the full Marathon to the men and let the women have their “Mini” Marathon is the implication. Let me the first to say that I think this is ridiculous. Women were not allowed to run in the Boston Marathon until the early 70’s even though in the few years prior to this some women ran the race but had to hide in the bushes near the start as they were not allowed an official entry. It was only in 1984 that a womens Marathon was added to the Olympic Games.

Why are we regressing to the period before this when it was felt that women wouldn’t be able to manage the full Marathon distance? Women have had to fight for years the right and opportunity to run a Marathon. What was the point if we are now holding women only “Mini Marathons?” By all means hold “women only” races but please call them what they are! Having said that I’m sure there would be a few objections if there were “men only” races, but I digress, this is a topic for another day…………
following spring made her the first official champion
Women have added hugely to the success and status of the Marathon in the past 30 years. Let’s not dilute this by the use of this silly term the “Mini Marathon”.

Well...do you agree or disagree with David O'Dwyer's article?? Click on the comment link below and have your say.

Entries for the Womens Mini-marathon.......
The next race in Cork is the Womens mini-marathon coming up next Sunday, the 27th of September at 1pm.

What it is and what it's not....
It is described as 'Munster's Premiere 4 mile road race'. Well, if you ignore the marketing blurb, it's not. In reality, it is a charity walk over a distance of about 3.8 miles with a road race at the front of it. Several thousand women will walk in this event raising tens if not hundreds of thousands of Euros for local charities. Somewhere in the region of 300 to 500? women will actually run the course.

Online entries are now closed but you can still enter until Thursday, the 24th at the Race office upstairs in Debenhams, Patricks Strret in Cork City.

With the online vote for RTE's Greatest Irish Sportsperson closing next Sunday, I had a look around the net and found these few gems...

A selection of Irish greats...

With people concentrating on medals and Olympics, perhaps it's easy to forget what an exceptional runner Sonia O'Sullivan was...

English Comedian Eddie Izzard's 43 marathons in 51 days....
I came accross this story on the BBC website about the English comedian Eddie Izzard who has completed 43 Marathons in 51 days. Now, some of the earlier Marathons were around the 10 hour mark but still, that much effort and dedication for a solid 7 weeks is something else.

Full story HERE.

Lost & Found........
During the Churchtown South 5 mile race last July, someone accidentally took a lady's running jacket with glasses in the pocket. It was a Black jacket with blue stripe.
If anyone knows who the owner is, they can send me an e-mail (shown near the bottom of the right hand column) or leave a comment here with your details (won't be published).

Helpers wanted for the Cork Half-Marathon...
St.Finbarr's AC are still a little short of helpers for the race on Sunday. They need people to help out with things like stewards for traffic control, water stations, etc. Perhaps if you are not doing the race, you might consider helping out? If so, just turn up early in Blarney and ask for Marian Lyons.

Preview of the Cork Half Marathon - Sun 13th Sept (11am)
The big event this weekend is of course the 'John Buckley Sports' Cork Half-Marathon in Blarney on Sunday, the 14th of September.

Directions / Start / Finish..........This race is run over the quiet roads to the North of Blarney, about 10 kms to 15 kms to the North West of Cork City. The easiest way to get there is from the N20 Cork to Limerick/Mallow road. Just take the slip road for Blarney. As you drive alongside the walkway, take the first left and then the next right after that. See map above. Entries will be taken at the GAA grounds.
The start of the race is very close to the GAA grounds. The finish is about 800 metres away on the other side of Blarney.
Course....The course is made up of 3 seperate sections....1) the road North from Blarney, 2) the loop and 3) the road back to Blarney.
1) From the GAA grounds, you run through part of Blarney and then North towards Waterloo. After about 800 metres, you should pass the finish line of the race. You carry on for another 1.5 miles with the woods and the river on your right. At the next road junction, you cross right over the bridge and carry on along a tree covered road until you reach a road junction near the 4.7 mile mark. All the while, you will have been running alongside the main N20 road which runs parallel to this small road and climbing slowly all the way. In fact, you will have gained about 50 metres in altitude from the start (30m) to the road junction at 4.7 miles (80m).
2) This is where the loop starts and where things start getting tough. At the junction at 4.7 miles, you stay left and the road gets steeper. Past the 5 mile mark and keep climbing. It eases a bit, you veer off right at the next junction and then start climbing again until it flattens out around the 6 mile mark just as you approach the village of Grenagh. In that last 1.3 miles, you wil have gone from 80 metres to over 160 metres in altitude....by far, the toughest section of the race.
Then it's through the village and take a sharp right. Here, the road drops rapidly as you lose 50 metres of altitude over the next half mile until you are near the 7 mile mark. From here, it is more or less flat or slightly downhill until you reach the road junction again near the 9 mile mark and the end of the loop.
3) This is one section where runners will pass each other....the slower runners heading towards the 4.7 mile mark as the faster runners return from the 9 mile mark. For the last 4.1 miles, you are basically retracing your footsteps. It is mostly flat or slightly downhill as far as the finish just before Blarney.
Overall.......a reasonably hilly course with a tough 1.3 mile section near the middle. If you want to have a closer look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'PTAA' 5 km road race.....Wed 2nd Sept 2009
This race took place in breezy and cool conditions. A record turnout of 383 runners took part. Just to put that in perspective and show just how dramatic the growth in numbers running has been recently, here are the past number of finishers...
2005...172
2006...153
2007...242
2008...325
2009...383

The biggest change this year was of course the change of the start and finish lines. The old finish was near a busy road junction and some of the slower runners had to run through traffic which was crazy. The new course is a lot better. The start line is on a quieter road and the finish is in a quiet housing estate. Fergus Wall has very kindly plotted out the new route on MapMyRun and you can compare that to the old route shown in the preview.

Overall Results for the Ballycotton Summer Series......
The overall results for the 4 races in the Ballycotton Summer Series are now available HERE. It looks like 155 men and 55 women completed all 4 races. I'm not too sure how exactly that compares to previous years but I'd suspect that it's a record number.
There was a time not too long ago when one race might have got 210 runners. To get a figure of 210 competing in all 4 races just goes to show how popular this summer series has become.

...........or has it something to do with Ballycotton 10 entries for next year ;o)

Shhhh.......we'll say no more until November about that subject!
Preview of the Cork BHAA 'PTAA' 5 km road race......Wed 3rd Sept
This is the next race coming up on the calendar and it's the last evening race locally.

Location.......the sign on for this race is in St.Finbarr's GAA hall in Togher. As far as I know, parking is mainly on the road outside so it's limited. To get there, just remember that while it is alongside the N25 South Link road, you need to take a bit of a detour to get there. Look for signposts for Togher on the South Link road....that should bring you up onto the Tramore Road. Follow this to it's end and the GAA hall is at the end of the cul-de-sac opposite the road junction. See the link for the course map to get a better idea of where to go.

Course.....I have to admit that this is my least favourite BHAA race. It's mainly around housing estates and the roads can be busy. The start is just outside the local church. You run back towards the bridge over the South Link Road and this is probably the most serious hill of the race. After that, you're on to Clashduv Road, up a slight incline past St.Finbarr's cemetry and back in through some housing estates. At around 1.5 miles, the road drops again and the route is flat after that....you run back onto the Clashduv Road, through a small estate and the finish is along the cul-de-sac to the GAA hall.

For most of the race, you are running at the side of the road with traffic passing outside. The one bad spot can be the finish. Cars are trying to come out of the GAA hall while runners are trying to finish. Truth be told, the area really isn't suitable for a road race as there is too much traffic. I can think of nicer places to run but no doubt there will be another big turnout as it is the last evening race on the calendar.

Cheap entries for the 'John Buckley Sports' Cork Half-Marathon....
Just a quick reminder that the date for cheaper entries for the 'John Buckly Sports' Cork Half-Marathon will end on Saturday, the 5th of September. If you enter before that date, the cost is €20. If you enter after that date or you enter on the day of the race (Sunday 13th Sept), the cost is €25.

To avail of the cheaper entries, your options are.......
1) Print out this form and post it off (Note that if you have to get a postal order or bank draft, you probably won't save much).
2) You can enter online (Again, there are additional charges although it's probably the easiest way to enter).
3) The cheapest option is probably to call into the John Buckley Sports store and enter there.
