Looking ahead to the Dungarvan 10...Sun Feb 1st 2009

The next big race coming up is the Dungarvan 10 mile next Sunday. This is the 2nd race in the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series, coming just 3 weeks after the Mallow race.

This year, they will be using a different race centre and the start and finish lines have moved as well. As this race is outside of Cork, I have have put all of the information...(previews, weather forecast, etc)...up on the Running in Munster website.

Results of the Eact Cork AC '3k Winter Series' road race (No.6 of 7) - Tues 27th Jan 2009
Condition were near perfect for this race as it was cool, dry and hardly a puff of wind. 126 turned out for this one, an increase of 4 on the previous event. Next race is in 3 weeks time on the 17th of February 2009.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'FMC' Little Island 4 Mile Road Race - Sun 25th Jan 2009

A little bit of that Ballycotton /East Cork luck seemed to rub off on the Little Island race yesterday as the skies cleared just in time for the race. The morning earlier was awful with driving rain and high winds as the centre of a low pressure weather system passed over Kerry. At 11am for the race, the centre of the low passed over East Cork, the skies cleared, the winds dropped and the sun beamed down. Not long after the race, the centre of the low passed and the bad weather returned. Talk about lucky!!

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'FMC' 4 Mile Road Race - Sun 25th Jan 2009 (11:00am)

The first road race in the Cork BHAA calendar takes place in Little Island next Sunday, the 25th of January at 11am. The registration point is the community centre which on the map above, is more or less exactly at the 1 mile mark.

Directions...If you are coming out of the city, the best way to get there is probably to enter Little Island from the Tunnel roundabout on the North side of the Jack Lynch tunnel. The Little Island/ Tunnel Management road is just to the left of the tunnel entrance, so one needs to be in the left-most lane, when approaching the tunnel. At the top of this short road, there is a small roundabout. Take the exit marked "Little Island Ind Estate". Keep going for about one mile.You will pass Pfizer's, Henkel/Cognis, and Punch Industries (all on the left). You will see a small ruined castle and a mobile phone mast on the left. The Little Island Sports Complex is next (next to the 1 mile marker). The advantage of this route is that one will pass over both the Start and Finish lines, and you should have less difficulty finding that Start line, after registering.

Parking.....There is ample parking in front of, and behind the Sport Complex, so there is no need to park on the main road. There is plenty of space accross the road in the industrial estate as well.

Registration....Inside the hall, there will be 2 queues....one for registered runners and one for non-registered. Considering that this is the first race of the year, the non-registered queue is likely to be very long. With the big crowd expected, it might be no harm to get there early especially if you are a non-registered runner.

Course...First a word of caution for new runners...you will need to run/jog 1 mile from the community centre back to the start line which is not too far from the Jack Lynch tunnel. The course is reasonably flat with no real hills. There are a few slight inclines but nothing worth talking about. As you can see from the map above, it really is a case of running along the main road in Little Island, a loop around an industrial estate and back the same way. One unique feature of the race is that near where the race loops around, you can see others in the race going the opposite direction...it's a bit like running a race and spectating at the same time!!

Overall...It's not exactly the most scenic of routes but this race always seems to get a good turn out. It's almost as if most people use it as their first race of the year. Last year, they got over 400 entries which was a big increase on the 313 entrants of the previous year. Weather permitting, I'd guess that they might break the 400 mark again this year. The current weather forecast shows some unsettled weather on Sunday.

Extra notes...If you want to have a closer look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website. If you zoom in there and press the SATELLITE button, you will see an aerial photo of the course and you can see the Community hall with it's car park.

New Poll....What was your longest race in 2008???

Before we go too far into the new year, it's time for a new poll. Question is.....What was your longest race in 2008??? Let see what most of you were up to and what was the longest distance. There are a few events where people might not be too sure........for example, the Ladies mini-Marathon was 4 miles. There were several lenghts in the relay section of the Cork Marathon......if this was your longest race, just pick the closest distance. See the poll on the right and select one.

Ballycotton Entries............BHAA Website.........

1) Cork BHAA........Their website is now back up and running. Please note that they would like people to register as early as possible with them for the coming year. It only costs €10 for the year and this entitles you to a reduced entry fee for each race for the rest of the year (€5 instead of €7). You will find the application forms here.

2) Ballycotton 10 entries.........Note that e-mails to the Ballycotton site are not being answered at the moment. They are very busy sorting through the avalanche of entries! All should be ok again by the end of the week and the remainder of the entries (club members and people who ran the Summer Series) should be up early next week. They are currently in the (slow) process of returning the late entries and unfortunately they have a lot.

Results of recent polls...

1) On Monday, the 1st of December 2008, the entry forms for the Ballycotton 10 came out. Some people would have sent off a SAE during November so that they could get the entry forms back by post. On the 2nd of December, I put up a poll which lasted just a few days. I asked.."What day did you get your Ballycotton SAE back?". 34 people voted.......50% got them back on the Monday, 41% got them back on the Tuesday and about 9% got them on Wednesday or not at all.

Several things may have skewed the results a bit........i.e. Overseas entrants in the UK would get their post later anyway but would they have sent a SAE if they can't get Irish stamps? Someone else told me they thought the poll was for when did you return your entry. Even allowing for errors, it probably still accurate enough.

Conclusion taken from the poll........If you are trying to enter the Ballycotton 10 before the cut-off deadline, the best option is to log onto the Ballycotton website on the evening the entries come out, print out the form and post it the next morning. Anyone who did this almost certainly got in. The SAE route is probably the 2nd best option if you do not have access to a printer/ Internet access. Of course, the best option of the lot was to be a member of a running club and avail of the 2 week window!!

2) The 2nd poll was for an evening series during the winter. In East Cork and Waterford, they already have a very successful series of short road races which take place during the dark evenings in the Winter. The question was if people would be interested in seeing a Winter series starting up in or closer to Cork City. 182 people responded and 93% of them were in favour. Without doubt, there is probably enough interest to support such a series. Perhaps the local running clubs might consider this over the next few months and consider doing something for next Winter??

Cork BHAA website problems...

Some of you may have noticed that the Cork BHAA website is down at the moment. Just to let you know that they are aware of the problem and it should be fixed soon.

The first race on the Cork BHAA calendar will take next place in Little Island on next Sunday, the 25th of Jan at 11am. I'll preview the race here next Thursday as we get closer to it.

Results of the Mallow 10 mile road race - Sun 11th Jan 2009

Despite the wet and windy conditions for this race, a record crowd of 576 turned out for this one, an increase of about 60 on the numbers last year. Surely, the weather must have deterred a few from turning up and if it had been dry, they might well have broken the 600 barrier. As it turned out, the actual conditions for the race were not so bad. Yes, it was windy, there was some light rain but nothing compared to when the main weather front that hit Cork a few hours later at about 6pm.

It was good to see that part of the main road between Mallow and Killarney was cordoned off for the runners with the Gardai controlling the traffic. With the pools of water on the side of the road, it would have been dangerous this year if that had not been the case. Overall, a well organised race. Well done to the guys at Mallow AC.

Next Race...

The Mallow 10 was the first race in the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series. The next one is the Dungarvan 10 on the 1st of February. The West Waterford guys were very busy in the hall today in Mallow taking entries for this race. Word has it that they took around 250 entries which brings the total pre-registered entries so far to around 600. Weather permitting, it's almost certain to attract another record crowd.

Weather Forecast for the Mallow 10 on Sun 11th Jan......

It looks as if the current cold snap will come to an end by the weekend with the temperature reaching double figures for the race on Sunday. It will however be very windy with a strong gale from the South. This will probably have more of an impact in the first half of the race. A cold weather front is also crossing the country on Sunday which will likely bring some rain. With 24 hours to go, the forecast looks a little bit better now. It looks as if the cold front won't arrive proper until the latter half of Sunday. It's likely that around mid-day, it will be cloudy, very windy but it may not actually be raining. At that stage, it is really hit or miss whether there is any rain about....it could be windy with no rain OR it could be windy with light rain. All you can say for certain is that it will be windy!! ;o).

Met Eireann predict the following........"Sunday will be a very windy day with strong to gale force southerly winds. Despite the winds it will be mild with temperatures in double figures. There will be further rain, intermittent at first, but turning persistent and occasionally heavy later."

Preview of the Mallow 10 Mile Road Race...Sun 11th of Jan, 2009 (12:30pm)
The Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series kicks off next Sunday with the Mallow 10 mile road race in North Cork. This is one of the major road races in the Cork Road race calendar.

Note that the registration point, the start and the finish are in 3 different parts of the town. This can and does catch out people who have never done this race before. See map above.....
A...this is where the Mallow Youth Centre is. You should park near here and register before 11:30am.. Prizes and refreshments are available here after the race as well.
B...this is the start point for the race. It's just under a mile from the Youth Centre. Just jog along with the other runners to the start and use it as part of your warm-up.
C...this is the finish point of the race. It's just a short walk back to the Youth centre from here.

How to get there...If you look at the map above, I have put in a series of RED dots showing a possible route. Just remember 2 things......
1) If you are coming from Cork, use the roundabout on the main Cork-Limerick road to enter the town centre. Don't follow the road to the right.
2) If you get lost, remember that the Mallow Youth Centre is on the North side of the Blackwater river. Stay on this side of the river and you'll find it ok.

Course...See map below for the course. While there are a few small hills and drags, there is nothing really bad. To be honest, I'd be more concerned about the wind. In general, for the first half of the race, you are running West and in the 2nd half, you are running East. A strong wind will probably impact you more than any of the hills. As for course itself, it starts in a residential area and heads out of town. Around the 1.5 mile mark, there is a slight uphill before you join the main N20 road. From here until the roundabout, you are running inside a pretty wide hard shoulder so you are not near the passing traffic. The only spot where you have to be careful is near the roundabout where the hard shoulder gets a bit narrow. After that, you turn left onto the main Killarney road. It's not the nicest of roads but the sheer number of runners makes the traffic slow down. Out around the 6 mile mark, you start the nicest part of the course with mostly quiet rural roads until you re-enter the town around the 9 mile mark. From here, you run as far as the bridge, cross over the Blackwater river and then run the half mile or so to the finish.If you want to have a closer look at the course, Mallow AC have put up the course on the MapMyRun website.

Registration...You will need to fill out an entry form at the registration point in the hall. If you want to save some time and just speed up the entry process, why not print out the form and fill it in before you go there? The link to the entry form is HERE.

Please note...and this in important!! Due to the increased numbers, Mallow AC ask all runners to try and register before 11:30am. This will help them get things ready so that the race can start on time.

Entry Fee...First of all, the entry fee for the Mallow 10 is €10. The guy's from West Waterford AC will be taking entries for the Dungarvan 10 on the day of the Mallow 10 at the Youth Centre. Remember that the Dungarvan 10 is the 2nd race in the Munster series and takes place on Sunday, the 1st of February. If you enter the Dungarvan race next Sunday, it will cost you €15 which is €5 less than if you enter on the race day in Dungarvan. So, if you are doing both races, bring €25.

New Runners...For any of you who have never done a 10 mile race before, my only advice for Sunday is to take it easy! You can't run it hard like a 5 mile race. Pace yourself, run about 30 to 40 seconds slower per mile than you would in a 5 mile race. You will probably have to work a lot harder to do the 2nd half of the race in the same time as the 1st half, so keep something in reserve.

2002 = 190, 2003 = 215, 2004 = 285, 2005 = 303, 2006 = 199, 2007 = 386 and 2008 = 521.

Headphones / MP3 players / iPods....

Someone asked about these. Strictly speaking, they are not banned but you will be running on the main road for sections. You are only putting yourself at risk if you wear them.

And finally...They will probably get over 500 runners for this year's event. So, get there early and avoid the rush to the start.

A) Registration is at Mallow Youth Centre. Directions to youth centre are as follows.....From Cork, Kerry, Limerick – when you come to main roundabout, follow directions for town centre, take the second left after the church. (O’Brien Street) and proceed up the hill past the shopping centre.From Dublin, Waterford take the first right after the Spa House, which will be on your left as you enter the town. Turn right at top of the hill.
Parking is not available at the Race HQ. This is for swimming pool users only.There are 4 other car parks within a 2-3 minute walk of the race HQ, these will be signposted.

B) Please come early, last entries are at 11:30. this is to help get all entries processed on a timely basis and enable us get the results out as soon as possible

C) There is a 10k walk starting at the main roundabout (4 mile mark) beginning at 12:00, entry €5

D) There are showers available at the youth centre, though we can't guarantee hot water for all runners …

E) Also if any spectators would like to help with marshalling and so forth, just contact any of the Mallow Athletic Club members on the day or drop an email to one of those listed on the Mallow AC website.

Old medal looking for a new home.....
Someone contacted me recently about an old running medal that was found in a house in Blarney Street recently. The finder has contacted some of the local radio stations in case they could help out. The inscription on the medal reads as follows.........
