Ballycotton Summer Series - 1993 v 2008
I know that a lot of you are pretty new to the local running scene and may be only competing in the road races for a short time. I suppose that it's easy to think that things are the same every year but in this post, I'll outline some of the differences between now and what it was like 15 years ago.

Why 15 years ago? Well, the first race that I did in East Cork was the Ballycotton 5 way back in August 1992. I was told then that it was the last race in the series and that there had been other races in places called Ballyandreen and Churchtown South...I said Ballywhere?? Churchtown What?? Strange places that I had never heard of. So, back I went in 1993 to complete the series and I having been going there every year since, 65 now on the trot ;o)

In August 1993, they got a record entry that night with 262 runners for the Ballycotton 5 mile, a huge entry at the time. That record entry would stand for over 10 years as it has been only broken recently in the last few years. Just remember that figure, 262 runners and then compare it to the fact that there was a new record entry of 379 last Thursday night, roughly 45% more than 15 years ago.

Some comparisons....Last Thursday evening, the mens race was won in a time of 26:10. That time 15 years ago would have placed you in 9th position.
My time last Thursday was 29:42 and that put me in 30th position. Back in 1993, that time would have put me in 81st!!
Last Thursday, 38 runners broke the 30 minute mark (sub 6 min miling). Back in 1993, 92 broke it.
On Thursday, 148 runners were faster than 7 minute miling, in 1993, it was 176.

As you can see, at present the numbers are way up but the times are way down. It's not that the slower times are necessarily a bad thing. Everyone does their own thing, times are slower now and that's just the way it is. But why??
Plenty of other sports to choose from? Too busy working? Less free time for training? Or are most people just not interested in doing that level of training anymore?

Results......As for getting race results back in 1993, things were a LOT different! No Running in Cork blog back then!! ;o) .......or for that fact, no Internet! Or even or e-mail. After each race, the results would be printed or photocopied. For the BHAA races, they were posted out to the team secretary of each registered company. For the non-BHAA races, you just had to hope that you would get a copy of the results at the next race You don't know how lucky you have it now :o)
And where to from here...?? On the odd occasion, I come accross results on the net from the USA. Short races like 5k's which seem to be popular over there. The pattern in the results show big crowds with a small number of fast runners, just like the way the races here seem to be going. What conclusions do you draw from that?.....1) We are turning into Americans!! ...ohhh...scary!! or 2) In post 'Celtic Tiger' Ireland, we are now like the USA, a 'Cash Rich, Time Poor' society?
Comments...???
"Hi John, I personally only started to run a couple of years ago as my football "career" petered out. Originally just to keep fit but I find the road races a good way of keeping motivated to continue with something thats in someway competetive. I've spotted a few others at races too. The Cork City Marathon and relay must have a lot to do with the increased numbers also. Keep up the good work.....Anonymous"
"John, I think another factor in the slowing times over the years is that while the fields are larger, the age profile of the runners is older. So we now have more veteran runners than previously.....Anonymous"
"That was actually something that I had not considered so I checked it out. Back in 1993, the % of the field that were vets for the Churchtown South 5 and the Ballycotton 5 were 36% and 39% respectively. In 2008, the figures were 37% and 38%. So it would seem that the percentage of runners who were vets back in 1993 was the same as it is today........John Desmond"
Overall results of the 2008 Ballycotton Summer Series...
A total of 139 people did all 4 races in the Summer Series this year, 103 men and 36 women. The final placings with the overall time and the time for each race can be found on this link HERE.
That link should open a Google documents page. If you click on the links at the top of the page, you should be able to follow your progress through each of the 4 races.

Results of the Ballycotton 5 mile road race - 28th Aug 2008
The last race in the Ballycotton Summer Series attracted a huge crowd of 379 runners, a record turnout for the event. For a 5 mile road race so far outside the city, that is an incredible number. A few years ago, getting above 200 seemed like a huge number. Here we are today and it's heading towards 400. What will next year be like??? And what about the weather.......it's raining for the whole Summer and the sun finally comes out for the Ballycotton 5!! Yet again, Ballycotton Running Promotions leave nothing to chance ;o)

Comments...???
"Hi John, just a thank you to all the organisers of the summer series.Without doubt they are the most enjoyable races to run, tough but fair. The atmosphere before and after the races are unique, I think, in the running scene. Well done to all and to your top ten finish, we'll all have to raise our standards to catch up!!!.........Terry Higgins"

Preview of the Ballycotton 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 28th of August 2008 (7:30pm)
This is the 4th and final race in the Ballycotton Summer Series in East Cork. It for me always marks the end of the Summer. It is the one race where you are going home in the dark after the refreshments and prizes have finished. It really brings home how fast the evenings are getting shorter at this time of year. There is only one evening race left after this one and that is the Cork BHAA 5k in Togher next week.

Start and Registration...First of all note that it is 7:30 pm!! , not 8pm. There is some distance between the parking area, registration and the start of the race. Parking is usually in a field on the way into the village. I'm not sure how it will be this year with all the rain that we have had...perhaps the ground might be too soft? Anyway, you should give yourself plenty of time for this one. The car park is about 600 metres from the National school where the registrations are taken. Considering that this race is likely to attract in excess of 300 entries, there will probably be delays there. If you have to then go back to your car to get changed, then that's another 600 metres and then you need to jog another 900m to get back to the start line!! All this takes time so you should really try and enter early.

As for the entries, inside the hall in the school, there will be 2 queues....
Queue 1)...Any runner who ran the first 3 races of the Ballycotton Summer Series (Ballyandreen ‘5’ & Shanagarry '5' & Churchtown South '5') is automatically entered for the Ballycotton 5 race. The race number corresponds with the runners’ overall position after the first three races. The full list can be seen at this LINK. Please join the correct queue in the hall and ask for your number from the list, which will also be posted on the wall.
Queue 2)...Any new runners can enter as normal. This is not a BHAA race, so if you are not a member of an athletics club just say where you are from (Cork, Charleville, Cloyne).

The entry fee is €6 (€5+€1 for charity) and having the correct amount ready helps to speed up the process.

Course...The first 3 miles of this race are pretty easy as they are mostly slightly downhill or flat. The tough work comes in the last 2 miles. First of all, there is a short but steep hill just before the 3 mile mark which will almost certainly slow you down. At the top of the hill, you turn the corner and the 3 mile will be just there. After that, it's mainly flat with some small bit of uphill and downhill running. The next hard section is after the 4 mile mark where you re-join the main road going back into Ballycotton. For any of you who have done the Ballycotton 10 road race, this is the famous hill around the 8.5 mile in that race. It's not that steep but it's about 400 metres long and gradually reduces in intensity. Once it flattens out, you'll have a nice run into the finish in the village.

If you want to have a closer look at the course and need directions (it's in Ballycotton!!), then look at the following link........http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/453964670

Profile of Athletic Clubs in Cork...
This post is for those of you out there who are the PRO's/Secretarys of the various Cork athletic clubs. If you look through the results of any of the local races, you'll notice that a lot of runners are not members of any club. I could well imagine that from the point of view of someone starting off, they might think that athletic clubs are only for 'serious' or 'fast' athletes. They would not realise that most clubs have members just like them. Or perhaps there are those who are doing their own thing and feel there is no need for them to join a club.
So, why not promote your own club and see if you can attract a few new members? I'll put up the info that you will supply here on this blog as a seperate post. If your club has a website, I'll link to it in the post. If you don't have a website, I can put up a page on another website with your club details. It may not be as good as a full blown website but at least it will give your club a space on the net where people can find out some information about you.
Perhaps you could supply your club information using the following guidelines...

Club Name : ??????
Town / Catchment area : ????????
Members : How many Seniors (Adults - %Men, %Women), Juniors?
Activities : What are your members involved in? Road Races? Track races? Other track & field events? Cross Country? Races overseas?
Training : Do your members meet for training runs on the road? Where? Do you do speedwork at a track? Where? Other types of training?
Events : Do you host a road race during the year? Other events?
Contact Name : Name, Phone number, E-mail address (Optional)
Website : ???
Any other info : ???

If you want to supply a group photo of your club members or anything like that, you can. Send on the info to my e-mail address which is shown at the bottom of the right hand column.

Looking ahead to races coming up in Cork and elsewhere...
We are getting to a stage now where the evenings are drawing in and the number of short races are coming to an end. This week on Thursday evening the 28th of August, we have the last race of the Ballycotton Summer Series with a 5 mile road race in Ballycotton itself at 7:30pm. I'll preview that race here on Wednesday morning. After that, the last evening road race of the season is the Cork BHAA 5km in Togher next week on the 3rd of September. That's really the end of the short races for the moment because that, the month of September is taken up with long races.
7th Sept...National Half Marathon in Waterford. The closing date for teams for this one is this Wednesday, the 24th of August. You can get an application form HERE . For more information contact Des Colbert on 086-1024841 or Derek Grant on 087-2893485
14th Sept...Cork Half Marathon. St.Finbarrs AC are hosting their annual Half Marathon in Blarney on the 14th. You can find an application form HERE. Note that the entry fee is €25 but if you enter before Sat 6th of Sept, the fee is €20. You can also enter online at http://www.activeeurope.com/
5th Oct...Cork BHAA 'Cork to Cobh' 15 mile. The closing date for this one is still some bit off. It's €15 before the 26th of September. You can get an entry form HERE.
27th October...Dublin City Marathon. Perhaps a few of you are thinking about doing this? Note that it currently costs €70 to enter. After the 1st of September, it will cost €80. You can get more details on the Dublin City Marathon website.
Comments...
"I'm hoping to do the final Ballycotton 5 this Thurs, was just wondering if the plaques for competing in all four races are presented afterwards? It's my first time participating in this series, it's been really enjoyable. It's handy to get a heads up on the course(especially the difficult parts), so all the information you have put up on your blog has been extremely helpful and I extend my gratitude. Well done......Anonymous"
"If you have completed all 4 races in the Ballycotton Series, you will recieve your plaque at the end of the race on Thursday evening. There should be someone just after the finish line handing them out. For anyone qualifying for a Top 50 T-Shirt (men)(Top 10?15? for women), you will have to go to the hall to collect them around 9pm......John Desmond.

Results of the Liscarroll 8 km Road Race - Sun 24th Aug 2008
There was a slight increase in numbers for this race in North Cork as 61 runners turned out for it.

Comments...
"Such a pity that this race did not get a better attendance than 61 runners, its a very well organised event plenty of stewards very good prizes, very good course tough but good,i presume the Cork vs Kerry game had alot to do with it,also its only the second running of this race and i predict it will get better numbers each year,It was really nice to see a friend of mine getting first place in the lady senior catergory,June Twomey is a regular runner at nearly all the local races and some races far away and she really deserved that today, well done June.......John Dunphy, Midleton AC"
"This was our first race in Ireland and it was great!! Loved the course, very well organized, everyone was very friendly and we had a fantastic morning!! Lovely food afterwards! Thanks for a great time!......Angela & Daniel Garcia"
"Nice to see some Spanish people running in our events as per comment left by Angela & Daniel, their comments were nice about this race, sounds like they really enjoyed it......Anonymous"

Preview of the Liscarroll 8 km Road Race - Sun 24th Aug (1pm)
The 'Tom Fitzpatrick Memorial 8km' road race takes place in Liscarroll in North Cork next Sunday, the 24th of August at 1pm. This is only the 2nd running of this race and last year, they got just 53 entries. Considering that they have dropped the entry fee from €15 to €10, I'd expect that the entry this year should be well up.
This is one race that I have never done but Donal O'Donoughue has come to the rescue and supplied the following info...
Last year it was a lovely Saturday evening, on dead-quiet roads. This year it seems to be Sunday lunchtime at 1pm. Last year, there was a perception that this was an "expensive" race, advertised at EUR 15, but turned out to be EUR 12 on the day. This issue may have discouraged some people ??? This year it's EUR 10. It's an 8km race, rather than a five-miler. DIRECTIONS..............From the City, head for Mallow on the N20. Go straight though at the first roundabout, and straight ahead at the second roundabout also. You will pass a Peugeot dealership, a Toyota dealership, and a Statoil/Topaz petrol station. Watch the concrete panel fence on the left side for a few hundred metres. Where this fence ends, take the left-turn, at the white sign "Lisgriffin" / "Liscarroll". You will almost immediately go under a high-arched railway bridge, and you're onto a country road that goes up and down, but is almost straight. Drive with care! Beware of farm traffic as it's harvest time.
Alternatively, one can continue from Mallow to Buttevant on the N20, and branch off to the left, at the far side of the town and follow the R578. Longer, but maybe a better quality of road ???
Either way, plan for *at least* a 45 minute journey from the point you get onto the N20 dual-carriageway beyond Blackpool.
REGISTRATION...................When you reach Liscarroll, take a right turn, Castle St, and head for registration at the Community Centre, which is perhaps 100m down this road, on the right-hand side. Last year there was a hand-drawn map of the course on display.
COURSE..............The start line is near the centre of the town, the route leads back towards the community centre, and then onto quiet country roads. The finish line is just beyond the Community Centre. No particular issues with parking last year. There was one water station about half-ways around the course. The outbound leg of the race is on almost deserted roads, but take care on the return leg on the R578 road. In 2007, the course appeared to be marked, in kilometres, in reverse order. Reasonably flat course. No particularly steep hills. There is one long gradual incline, but nothing to worry about. Refreshments after the race are in the Community Hall.

Thanks for the info Donal. He has also kindly put up the route on the MapMyRun website if you want to have a closer look at the course or just want to see where Liscarroll is. Click HERE. Use the +/- controls to zoom IN or OUT.
More information on the race and prizes on offer can be seen on the Liscarroll AC website. Click HERE.
Results of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 Mile Road Race - Wed 20th Aug 2008
Despite the fact that we are in the middle of the holiday season, 277 runners still turned out for this 5 mile road race in the Naval base in Ringaskiddy. That's a increase of about 30% on last years figure which is a big jump.
One unusual feature of this race was that there was a dead heat for the finish with both Sean McGrath and Colin Meritt crossing the line together. What is amazing is that after 26 minutes of running, they should finish so close that the BHAA officials on hand could not decide who had won it. This was I presume, a first for a BHAA race.

Results...The full results are now available HERE.

(Updated 8th Sept 2008)
Photos...Thanks to Irene Hartigan, a set of 91 photos are now available at this LINK.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 mile road race - Wed 20th August 2008 (7:30pm)
Only 2 more evening races to go on the Cork BHAA calendar and this is the 2nd last one. The sign-on, start and finish is in the Naval base near Ringaskiddy.
Directions...Just get to Ringaskiddy, drive straight through and when the road is about to end, take the left towards the Naval base. Once you get to the base, there will be Navy personnel directing you to the parking area.
Course details...The start and finish points are in the Naval base itself. The course goes back towards Ringaskiddy and just as you are entering the town around the 1.5 mile mark, you take a sharp left and climb 500 m up a steep hill. This is by far the hardest part of the race as the hill is long enough and steep enough to leave you out of breath if you push too hard. After that hill, the course is pretty much ok. There are some small drags but nothing major. So overall, it's not a bad race.

Going on last year's entry, I'd expect the turnout to be around the 200 to 250 mark. Perhaps not as high as some other races as a lot of people seem to be holidays at this time of year. Just remember the start time, 7:30 pm, not the usual 8pm.

If you want to have a closer look at the course or need more directions, have a look at this link...http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/3579396
By the way, whatever about the course, in terms of refreshments afterwards, this one is one of the best ;o)
Comments...
"Suggestion for a new competition now that the headphone poll is finished.“Spot How Many People Run This Race Wearing Headphones”. These are the people who still break the rules of the BHAA by continuing to run races wearing headphones despite numerous warnings that they are banned. These are the people who by the fact of wearing headphones are NOT insured to run these races (do they drive without insurance?) and continue to risk effecting the insurance of other runners. What happens if you are tripped etc. by an uninsured runner? They are quite entitled to wear them at other races if they wish but not at BHAA races. So I suggest a “Name and Disqualify” policy be introduced to stop these rule brakers...........James D. Kidd"
"What are the departure times for the launch from Cobh to the Naval base this evening please, I presume ok to use for the race?............. Thanks Fergal"
"Fergal....From what I can see on the Internet, you need a Naval pass to use that launch. Unless someone else has more info, I'd suggest maybe using the Cross Harbour Ferry from to Glenbrook from Carrigaloe.....John Desmond"

Business Houses Athletic Associations - Cork V Dublin
I'm sure all of you are aware of the Cork BHAA but perhaps some of you may not realise that there is a BHAA in Dublin as well. It runs races along much the same lines as the Cork version and are in fact responsible for organising the Dublin City Marathon every year.
I had always assumed that the Dublin version of the Business Houses Athletic Association was a lot bigger than the Cork BHAA just based on the relative sizes of the 2 cities. Recently, I was looking at some of the Dublin BHAA results and the numbers seemed a bit low. So, I went digging ;o)

I compared the Dublin and Cork results for 2005 and 2008 to see what the figures and trends were like. I only looked at short road races for both years.

Dublin (2005)...They had races between 2 and 8 miles in lenght. They had 10 road races with an average of 187 runners per race.
Cork (2005)...They had 15 road races between 5k and 10k in lenght with an average of 216 runners per race! So, back in 2005, the Cork BHAA seemed to be attracting slightly larger crowds.

Fast forward to 2008 and here is the situation in mid-August...
Dublin (2008)...They had 6 races attracting an average of 217 runners per race. That represents a 16% increase in 3 years. So, Dublin's 2008 average has just caught up with Cork's 2005 figure.
Cork (2008)...They had 10 races with an average of 354 per race. That's an increase of 64% in 3 years!!

So, to summarize, the Cork BHAA are currently in 2008 getting an average of 354 runners per race while the Dublin BHAA are getting 217.

Q...Why are the Cork BHAA getting so many in their races?? Dublin as a city has a population that is way bigger than Cork yet the race numbers in Cork are larger.....a lot larger! Why???

Possible answers...
1) Is it the relay event in the Cork City marathon? Has it introduced a lot of runners to the local race scene and they are now taking part?
2) A big factor may be the entry fee. If I have understood it correctly, the entry for a BHAA race in Dublin is €10 for a registered runner and €15 for a non-registered. The entry fee in Cork is €5 and €7 respectively.

So, why exactly are the numbers in Cork bigger than Dublin?....and why are the numbers in Cork growing so much faster?

Comments???
"Because Dublin people are basically lazy, and Cork people are always on the go, or else in Cork we have too much time on our hands!........Maggie"
"Ouch!!!....thanks Maggie ;o)........John Desmond"
"I think it is a combination of things. First of all, the re-introduction of the Cork marathon...a lot of people kept it up after that. Second reason.........local road races are very well organized and a lot of people realize now that you don't have to be a fast runner to enjoy running these races. Now more than ever, your website is getting the race info out there so people know what's going on, not just in Cork but all over the country. This is vital for better attendances. How many races have I done outside of Cork?...I've lost count. Where do I get the race info.......Running in Cork of course and that's the key. People now know where to find local races, it's obvious by the increase in numbers to your site. And last, it's the huge commitment that club runners put in each and every race....you always see the club runners regulary at each event.....John Dunphy, Midleton AC"
"Apart from Cork being a far superior place and being the real capital, I think your site has a lot to do with it. Nobody in Dublin is putting in this work to provide information on events. This attracts beginners / first time racers........Anonymous"
Ardmore 5 Mile & Races this week...Mon 18th to Sun 24th of August 2008
Last week, we had no races in Cork with 2 races elsewhere in Munster. I availed of the break to venture down to Ardmore in West Waterford to do the 5 mile race there on Friday evening. There were a few of the regular Cork faces scattered amongst the sea of White and Blue singlets who also had the same idea! The extra runners obviously made an impact because it looked like they got a lot more than last years figure of 181. Overall, it was a well organised race...nice country roads, scenic area, loads of stewards and enough sandwiches afterwards to feed a small army ;o) .......For anyone who did this race, you can find the results HERE.

This week, we have 2 races in Cork while there is nothing else in Munster. On Wednesday evening, the Cork BHAA are holding their 'Army/Navy' 5 mile road race in the Naval base in Ringaskiddy. Note that the start time is 7:30pm, not 8pm!! I'll preview it here on Tuesday morning.
On Sunday the 24th, there is the Liscarroll 5 mile race in North Cork. I'll look at that on Friday morning.

East meets West...Ardmore 5 mile road race - Fri 15th Aug (7:30pm)
If you look through the results of the shorter road races (10km or less) around Munster, it's obvious that the vast majority of the runners are locals. In general, most people wont make a long trip to take part in a short race.
Here in Cork during the Summer, we have had a race every week, sometimes even more than one per week. Next door in Waterford, they also have had a busy Summer of road races.
This week, it just so happens that there are no local races in Cork and the Waterford guys are holding their race in Ardmore in West Waterford, just beyond Youghal. So, it presents a unique situation where East meets West, a race in West Waterford that is easy to get to from Cork.
Ardmore is just off the N25 Cork to Waterford road. Just look for the signposts a few kms after the Youghal bypass. Note that the start time is 7:30pm, not 8pm!! Here is some more info on the race...
An Tobar-Ardmore 5 final race in Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series.Entries-changing -showers Ardmore G.A.A. club house. Teas and sandwiches plus presentation of race prizes and overall series presentation at An Tobar. Race starts 7.30 pm, entry fee 8 euro.

Running 'can slow ageing process'.......BBC News item
"Running on a regular basis can slow the effects of ageing, a study by US researchers shows.
Elderly joggers were half as likely to die prematurely from conditions like cancer than non-runners. They also enjoyed a healthier life with fewer disabilities, the Stanford University Medical Center team found. Results of the 'Headphone Ban' Poll...
You may have noticed that this popular poll finished recently. First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who selected an option. With 316 votes, it was certainly the biggest poll ever on this website.

The poll question was "In road races, should headphones be banned?"
As you can see, a slight majority voted Yes but with only a difference of 6 votes out of 316, it was almost a draw. If you take the 'Don't cares' out of it, the result was 51% Yes, 49% No.
Some comments...
1) Now it is important to note that this was an opinion poll, not a vote!! It is up to the race organisers as to whether they want to ban headphones or not. This poll just shows that people are pretty evenly split about the subject.
2) Personally, I voted 'Don't Care'. Except for the start of the race, I never see runners with headphones. I'm not really pushed whether people wear them or not. I would have have thought more people would have voted 'Don't Care' but it seems to be an emotive subject with 87% of people feeling strong enough about it to vote Yes or No.
The debate about the Headphone Ban can be seen here. If you would like to comment on the Pro's or Con's of the ban, click on the Comment link there.

Results of the 'Streets of Cobh' 5 km Road Race - Fri 8th Aug 2008
Just over 100 runners turned out for this 5k race in Cobh on Friday evening. Good to see that there was no 'incidents' this year! Remember all the drama last year?

Photos......That man, Mr. Quigley was out and about with his camera again...doe's he ever leave it at home??? He took 179 photos of the Cobh race and he has now uploaded them onto the Eagle AC website. Well done Mr. Q!!

Comments...
"Hi there, 10.00 euro for a 5k road race was too steep, not great value if you're not in the prizes.....Anonymous1"
"Someone else has sent me an e-mail pointing out that the entry fee for the Cobh race was €7 rather than €10........John Desmond"
"There were plenty of very good quality prizes in lots of catagories (as there always is in Cobh). Any profit goes to support the local running club who organise the race. Also the food after was excellent as usual. This is the type of miserly comment we don't need. Thank you. You should have gone to Shanagarry on Sat, it was only 3 Euro or is that too dear also?........Anonymous2"
"Sorry my mistake, I thought I paid 10 euro. I'm not worried about race prices as such as I only run 2 or 3 races max per year as I'm unemployed. Most races are too expensive for me to enter so I just run on my own once or twice a week.........Anonymous1"

Anyway, on to the results...
