Ultra runner killed by lightning in the USA

In an unfortunate incident last Saturday, an ultra runner has been killed by lightning as he approached the finish line in a 50km race in the USA.

Thomas Stanley, aged 33, was around 400 metres from finishing the FlatRock trail race at Elk City State Park, Kansas, when he was struck. He would have finished 11th out of 104 competitors.

The day had started off hot and sunny before a small storm hit the area without warning.

A friend described him as a "running evangelist" who had previously taken part in at least two 100-mile events.

"He loved the endurance challenge of overcoming the difficulty it would take on you," he said.
