Marathon trends 2014-2017 by age and gender

A huge study of marathon runners from 2014 to 2017 shows some interesting results. The data from over 3 million runners taking part in 784 marathons in 39 countries was used to compile the report.



Age Profile of Marathon Runners...

The chart above show the age profile of marathon runners. As you can see, the bulk are between the ages of 30 and 50 years old.

Finish times...
The world’s average finish time for men in a marathon in 2017 was 4h 15m 14s. The world's average finishing time for women was 4h 47m 15s.

Europeans were faster than Americans...
The average for a European man was 4h 04m 16s where as it was 4h 29m 10s in North America.

For women, the average finish time was 4h 33m 57s in Europe and 4h 52m 19s in North America.

Gender Breakdown...

There is actually a pretty big difference between North America and Europe when it comes to the percentage of women running marathons.

In the US, 45% are women where as in Europe, it down at 25%.
