Entries for the Cheetah Run in Fota Wildlife Park open Thurs 3rd May

The 2018 Cheetah Run in Fota Wildlife Park organised by Eagle AC is coming up on Thursday the 17th of May 2018 at 8pm. As well as there being the usual 5k race, there is also a one mile race for juveniles (11-15 year olds).

Please note that there is a limit of 900 entries for the 5k race. The lower age limit is 16 years old.

Entries for the 5k race open on Thursday the 3rd of May....450 places will be available at 10am with the remaining 450 opening at 7pm.

The entry link will be posted closer to the entry day.

***

5k Course...Following the success of last two years, the same 5k route will be used again. This will take in all areas of the Wildlife Park including the new Asian Sanctuary.

The entry fee includes free access to the park for two adults and two children on the night. Access will be controlled on the night and will be open from 6:30pm.

There will also be a 20% discount voucher for John Buckley Sports. The savings on say a new pair of shoes would cover the entry fee.

Juvenile 1 Mile Race.....There is also a 1 mile race for juveniles this year (Ages 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15). This will take place before the 5k race at 7:15pm. The numbers will be limited to 100. Entries for this will open also on the 3rd of May in two batches...45 at 10am and 45 at 7pm. The one mile race has been measured accurately by Jones Counter, will be chip timed and all finishers will receive a medal. Please note that there are no prizes in the juvenile race. The entry fee is €8 including an online processing fee.

Artwork for the medal for the Juvenile race

As always, entrants can bring family members to either race. This includes free access to the wildlife park for the runner and family members. This normally costs €15.50 per adult, or €46 for a family of two adults and two children.

There is also a 20% discount voucher from John Buckley Sports.

Laya Healthcare is also a sponsor.... Laya provide Health Insurance, Life Insurance and Travel Insurance, Established in 1997 they are the second largest health insurance provider in Ireland with over half a million members.

Please note.....No buggies/baby strollers/dogs...no headphones....no transfers....and no late entries.

The minimum age is 16 for the 5k race as per Athletics Ireland permit recommendations.

5k Race...There will be prizes for the first 5 men and women as well as the usual age categories. The exact number of prizes for the age categories will be determined after the online entries close with the aim of making each age category competitive.

I would seriously advise people that have an interest in doing this race to enter as soon as it opens. It really will sell out early.

Updates about the race will be made available here and on the race page on the Eagle AC website.

Sponsor...John Buckley Sports is one of the race sponsors and is one of the main specialist running shops in Cork City. They have a wide stock of gear in the shop and on their website....www.johnbuckleysports.com

They have been in business since 1981 and it's fair to say that the shop is highly regarded by many of the runners on the local road race scene. They also have a app which you can download to your smartphone which gives a generous discount when using it.

Results & Photos of the Ballintotis 4 mile road race...Thurs 19th Apr 2018

It seemed only appropriate that the warmest day of the year so far in 2018 also coincided with the first major race of the Summer road race season in Cork with a whopping 826 runners taking part. Conditions were almost perfect with some nice sunshine for the whole race, something we haven't seen a lot of of late.

It was also a big race for East Cork AC after two of their members took the respective titles. Michael Harty's time of 19:15 was also a new course record while Fiona Santry won the women's race for the first time.

Final info for the Ballintotis 4 mile coming up Thurs 19th Apr 2018

The Summer season of road races kicks off with the Balllintotis 4 mile road race on Thursday the 19th of April 2018. After a long dark winter, the evening races will make a pleasant change from the weekend events.

The race is at 8pm and is chip timed. You can enter on the night but make sure to get there early because of the crowds.

Preview......You can see a preview of the course HERE

Here is the final info from the organisers.......The big night is now almost upon us again with the ninth running of the Ballintotis '4' Mile Road race taking place on this Thursday April 19th.  A lot of work has been done over the past few months in preparation for what we hope will be another occasion to remember.

James McCarthy of the host club East Cork AC has won the event in all the previous  8 years and last year got the better of club mate Sean McGrath after a titanic struggle. The ladies honours 12 months ago went to  Irish International Claire McCarthy who has distinguished herself with some super performances in the green singlet since then.

The success of the Ballintotis event which was brought to the picturesque venue by East Cork A.C in 2010, is due to a number of factors. It's fair to say that the generous sponsorship and backing from the local business community has been a key component in it's rise and with this in mind, the local Ballintotis Race Committee wish to acknowledge again the continued backing of a number of their loyal major sponsors.

Spotted at the road races... John Walshe of Ballycotton

Anyone who knows John Walshe of Ballycotton will know that he is a great supporter of local road races and 10-mile road races in particular. John was running last Sunday at the Killea 10 mile road race last Sunday in North Tipperary and someone snapped this photo as he crossed the finish line...

Borrisoleigh Track Attach had this piece on their Facebook page...."The word legend is often thrown around within sport but the man pictured here is a true legend of Irish running. It was great to see East Cork man John Walshe at the Killea Road Run where he completed the 10 mile race. "Mr Ballycotton" is a person and role model that all who are involved with organising any sport should aspire to emulate. The sport of road running would be in a far darker place if it wasn't for the efforts of John Walshe over the last 4 decades."

Results of the Karen Fenton Memorial 5k race... Sun 15th Apr 2018

A whopping 694 runners turned out for the inaugural Karen Fenton Memorial 5k in Ballinora on Sunday the 15th of April 2018. After putting up the race notice a few weeks back, I could see that the post was getting a lot of hits but little did I suspect that the turnout would be so great.

Race numbers at the moment seem to be highly volatile with the recent Emer Casey 5k in Youghal dropping a massive 28%..the lowest number since 2010, the BHAA Gas Networks race down to its second lowest ever and now this one way up at almost 700 runners. One thing is for sure, you certainly can't take the numbers turning up at a race for granted.

Results of the Cork BHAA Gas Networks 5 mile...Sat 14th Apr 2018

A total of 320 runners turned out for Cork BHAA Gas Networks 5 mile race on Sat 14th Apr 2018 and unusually for a BHAA race, it was held on a Saturday evening. Comparing it to the other Gas Network races over the years, this one is the second lowest turnout ever and just 4 more than the inaugural race back in 2012.

Another unusual feature was the lack of faster women in the race. The first woman was in 98th place overall where as normally it would be around the 20 to 30 mark or at least it used to be. It seems that as times goes by, the number of faster women on the race circuit seems to be dropping off. Not sure why.

As well as Rotterdam and Rome, the Manchester Marathon was also held last weekend on Sunday the 8th of April 2018. This particular marathon has got a lot of bad publicity of late after it was found that the 26.2 mile course was actually short for a number of years due to a measuring error.

These are the Irish men under 3:10 and Irish women under 4 hours (Club only as there is no other way of finding them).

Guest Post : CORK TO COBH RACE OF 1978 – WHEN WOMEN COMPETED FOR THE FIRST TIME ... by John Walshe

This weekend marks a significant anniversary for Cork (and indeed Irish) athletics for it was on this Sunday 40 years ago that women took part for the first with the men in an Irish road race. The occasion was the Cork to Cobh 15-mile event and the iconic picture (courtesy and copyright of the Evening Echo) shows the three pioneering women – Marion Lyons, Dervla Mellerick and Elaine Kelly – at the start line on the Lower Road. The following article, published last Tuesday in the Evening Echo, tells the story of that historic day.

CORK TO COBH RACE OF 1978 – WHEN WOMEN COMPETED FOR THE FIRST TIME
(By John Walshe, Evening Echo, April 10, 2018)

On Monday next, April 16, the famous Boston Marathon takes place for the 122nd time. Twelve months ago, the race honoured Kathy Switzer on the 50th anniversary of her participation in the race which made her the first woman to run the iconic course from Hopkinton to Boston.

Entering by just using the initials ‘KV Switzer’, during her run a race official famously attempted to stop her but he was shoved to the ground by Switzer’s boyfriend and the 20-year-old went on to finish the 26.2-mile course. However, it wasn’t until 1972 that women were officially allowed to take part in the event.

This weekend also marks a significant date here in Cork for it was 40 years ago – on Sunday April 16, 1978, that women were allowed for the first time in this country to line up in a road race beside the men.

The occasion was the 15-mile event from Cork to Cobh, a race with already a chequered history as it had on a number of occasions hosted both National and Munster championships.

Road running in the 1970s was a far cry to what it is today. That year of 1978, the Cork to Cobh attracted just 33 entries, of which 27 finished. Race headquarters was at the old Arcadia Ballroom where entries (at 40 pence) were taken. The race started at 3pm underneath the railway bridge at Water Street and finished outside the post office in Cobh.

Amongst that small entry were the names of Marion Lyons, Elaine Kelly and Dervla Mellerick – three pioneering women in the history of Irish athletics. A preview in the previous Friday’s Evening Echo stated: “It is an ambition at the back of every club athlete’s mind to finish the course [from Cork to Cobh]. It could be regarded as a race that separates the men from the boys but on Sunday next it will be a matter of separating the men from the women.”

The PRO of the Ballymore-Cobh club, the organisers of the race, was quoted as saying he was delighted to hear of women taking part. “They certainly show a lot of courage,” he said, adding that the club may in fact consider having a special prize for the first female to finish.

Marion Lyons is the only one of the three still involved in the sport. She is currently President of her beloved St Finbarr’s AC and as recently as a month ago was the winner of the F60 category at the County Road championship at Castlelyons.

She recalls that historic occasion on the road to Cobh four decades ago: “I suppose we were afraid that the men would object, but nobody really minded. If anything, I’m sure the men were delighted we were there and you could say we have never looked back.

“I knew Elaine and Dervla and we decided we’d love to take on the challenge of running against the men and doing a longer distance. We didn’t really want to tell them in case they would object as at the time there were no women running with the men, even though men were my greatest friends to train with, they were so good to me.”

Of the three, Marion was the most experienced having represented Ireland at senior level on a number of occasions, the highlights being the World Cross-Country Championships at Chepstow and Düsseldorf.

Dervla Mellerick had, a month before, made the Irish team for the World C-C in Glasgow but for Elaine Kelly, 15 miles was a lot longer than she was used to. She was mainly a 400m/800m track runner with two national titles over the latter distance to her credit in 1971 (2:14.7) and 1977 (2:06.07).

“As we got nearer to the race, the organisers heard about us and they said they would allow us run,” says Marion. “We had actually run the 15 miles in training and on the day we stayed together for most of the race and then towards the end I just stepped ahead and won it.

“We felt very good throughout the race, the men were saying to us ‘don’t pass up, don’t pass us’ but I said to them ‘come on lads, come with us, sure we’re all in the same boat’.”

Donie Walsh of Leevale was first across the line in the men’s race in a time of 77:35 ahead of Midleton’s Liam O’Brien who recorded 78:14 with former winner of the race, Richard Crowley, third in 78:48. The times of the three women on that historic occasion were: Marion Lyons, 1:42:30; Dervla Mellerick, 1:42:37; Elaine Kelly, 1:44:56.

Marion Lyons would go on to run six marathons - which included a win in the Cork Marathon of 1986 – recording a personal best time of 2:54:57 for the distance. She is one of the most enthusiastic and inspiring figures in athletics and her passion for the sport is as evident today as it was all those years ago.

“I would still encourage people to get involved in sport because the self-esteem and confidence gained is invaluable. Everyone is important and can make a difference, whether you’re elite or down the field,” sums up this remarkable pioneer who has certainly left her own historic mark on women's athletics in Cork.

Irish results in the 2018 Rome Marathon...

Another big event last weekend last was the Rome Marathon which was held on Sunday the 8th of April. The number of Irish runners in this one was pretty low which was probably due to the fact it was clashing with the Rotterdam marathon and it is well known as a slower course with cobblestone roads in sections.

Suprisingly, only one Irish man broke 3 hours and that was Pat O'Connor of Eagle AC in Cork. Pat was also the 3rd M50 home which is some going considering the number of Italian M50's who would have been running in their home marathon.

Another suprise was that only one Irish woman broke 4 hours! Most Irish runners seemed to have opted for the flat roads of Rotterdam last weekend.

Irish results under 4 hours below...

Top Irish results for the 2018 Rotterdam Marathon

The 2018 Rotterdam Marathon was held last Sunday the 8th of April and almost 14,000 runners took part. This has a reputation of being a flat and fast marathon course and many Irish runners travel there to take part. In fact if you book the flights and accommodation well in advance, it can work out pretty reasonable.

These are the results for the top Irish runners....Men who broke 3 hours and Women who broke 3:30. Runners from Munster in Bold.

Also note that Gary Condon was 3rd M45 and Orla O'Rourke of Ballymore Cobh AC was 1st F50!

Notice : MMRA 7km trail run on Curragh Woods Mtn nr Midleton - Sun 15th April 2018

The next event on the MMRA calendar is a 7km trail race near Midleton in East Cork. This is the ninth race in the Munster Mountain Running Association Winter-Spring League 2018.

From the MMRA...There's a lovely trail race on Sunday 15th April 2018 in Curragh Woods just outside Midleton.  The event is suitable for the whole family as there is also a junior race (10 – 16) and an accompanied run for u10s.  This run is suitable for all levels of ability and we would encourage people to come and try it out.  The junior and kids runs will kick off at 10:30 am and the adult race starts at 11:00 am.

The route uses the network of walking trails that run through the forest, including a scenic riverside section.  The run is approximately 7k in distance and is a good one to try if you have been thinking about giving trail running a go.  The route has a few hills in it (climb of 220m) just to get the heart rate up a bit and there might be a little bit of mud thrown in for good measure also, depending on the weather.

Curragh Woods is located just 4km north of Midleton on the R626 to Lisgoold. The race start and registration location is at the forest entrance (google maps link) and registration is open from 9:45am - 10:45am.

The race entry fee is €5 (plus a €10 annual registration fee if it’s your first race of 2018  -  go to www.imra.ie to register for the year). Note that it is mandatory to bring and carry a jacket that is shower and wind proof for the entire race.
