Results & photos of the Irish 24 hour Championships in Belfast...Sat 25th & Sun 26th June 2016

The Irish 24 hour championships were held last weekend in Belfast on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th of June 2016. This is one of the main Ultra races in Ireland and one of only two Ultras that count as Championships.

A large number of runners and crew descended on Victoria Park in East Belfast for the event on Saturday morning. Located between between the Harland & Wolff Dockyards and the George Best International Airport, it made for an ideal venue with a course that was just over one mile in length.

At least 4 runners from Cork took part in the full 24 hour race which started at noon on Saturday. Eoin Keith who is originally from Cobh was dominant once again with an amazing 150 miles being covered.

The suprise performance of the 24 hour race was that of Aidan Hogan from Cork. As a newcomer to the Ultra scene, he ran an impressive 147.9 miles and indeed was running well all the way up to the midday deadline on Sunday.

Alex O'Shea of St.Finbarr's AC took on his first 24 hour race and finished in 5th place overall. More importantly, Alex finished just above the 24 hour B standard of 220kms which means that he is now eligible to be selected for an Irish team for the European and World 24 hour championships.

In total, there were 86 competitors in the 24 hour race and 44 managed to break the magic 100 mile barrier. Grellan McGrath of Eagle AC finished in 10th place overall with a distance of 125.3 miles, surpassing the 102.6 miles which he did in the same event in 2015.

Results of the Grant Thornton 5k in Cork City...Wed 29th June 2016

This was the second year of this particular race and the numbers were down about 23% on last year. In contrast to say the Cork BHAA races where registered runners pay a €5 entry fee, this is a different type of inter company event with most companies paying the €100 entry fee for teams of four runners.

Notice...Bere Island Midsummer Run 5k & 10k - Sat 9th July 2016

This is quite probably one of the most spectacular spots for a road race in Cork if not the country. Bere Island on a fine day is an amazing spot with the backdrop of Bantry Bay and the Beara Peninsula.

There are plenty of races that are cheaper to enter but none are in such a scenic location. If you are thinking of going then it would really worth considering making a day of it rather than just going for  the race itself.

The races take place in Rerrin village at the eastern end of the island...

There are two car and passenger ferries servicing the island...Bere Island Ferries and Murphy's Ferry.

You can pre-enter online HERE or on the day at the GAA grounds.

Course Preview.....A full preview of the course with directions, maps and photos can be seen HERE.

It was announced today that the Paralympic athlete Orla Barry from Ladysbridge in East Cork will be now be upgraded to a World Championship silver medal after she won a bronze medal at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha last year.

Orla, who originally took bronze in the F57 Discus final will now have a World Championship silver medal to add to her collection following the news that Bulgarian field athlete, Stela Eneva, has been suspended by the IPC for four years for an Anti-Doping Rule violation.

Anger expressed at commercial company spray painting a running route in the Ballyhouras

I came across a post on Facebook which had been shared by some in the hill walking community...

Eidin Clery.....So, the poor ballyhouras mountains have become victim again from a private company running a... Running! Event over next few days...it's quite unbelievable how they are marking their routes..yellow spray paint over, 40km or more of the ballyhoura hills...no place safe I walked 2 km this evening clearing it and cleaning marks off they marked fireroads, trees, grass, roots, earth banks...also all on linear routes where there is no need to mark anything....as far as I can make out...they have no permission, they didn't publicise locally, they do not clean up, they totally disregard our hills, nobody in local community benefits in any way financially or otherwise.... It's a disgrace. Have sent emails to coilte and will ring tomorrow to complain etc if anyone sees event organisers about can u pass on info please....rumour has it its a company called celtic traverse!

There are also a few video videos posted on Facebook HERE

The Celtic Traverse is a six day running tour organised by a commercial company called Primal Challenges in Armagh. They charge in the region of £1,500 for the whole package which  includes accommodation and transport.

Based on the itinerary above, the runs in the Ballyhoura are probably on the 22nd and 23rd of June and on the Kerry Way on the 25th and 26th of June.

Looking through the videos, it would seem that these markers are placed all over the course rather than at some key junctions. Assuming that it is degradable line marker paint then it will probably take about one to two months for them to disappear.

Thoughts?

Photo finish to 5k race in Dublin last weekend...

The Castleknock 5km road race was held last weekend in Dublin and attracted a field of 556 runners. While only two seconds separated the first two men, the women's race was even closer with fractions of a second separating the first two.

The photo above shows Catherina McKiernan #744 with Caroline Crowley #741 in the final straight. Catherina McKiernan is of course a former Irish international athlete who has won four individual Silver World Cross Country Championship medals and hold the Irish Marathon record. Caroline Crowley was part of the Irish women's team that won Bronze at the European Cross Country Championships in France in December of 2015.

As you can see below, it was almost impossible to separate the two at the finish line and the chip timing equipment recorded a difference of 0.001 seconds!

New 5k parkrun in Ballincollig starts Sat 18th June

The new 5km parkrun starts in the Ballincollig Regional Park on Saturday the 18th of June. With the cancellation of the weekly parkrun in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City, this one should prove to be very popular.

When it was first announced, there was some debate about parking and what the route might be? Well, this is it...

As you can see, it's not starting from the West end or the East end of the park but rather in the middle where the allotments are located. The course goes clockwise and consists of two loops.

Parking is available in the Lidl car park as well as in the church.

The course is very flat and level so it should be a fast one!

To register, just go to the parkrun website and print out your unique bar code... http://www.parkrun.ie/
Bring that bar code with you every week and you'll be fine.

The parkrun starts at 9:30am every Saturday.

Just remember, this is a weekly event. If too many people turn up for the first one or two then the whole thing will just get congested and it will only lead to problems. If you're in no particular rush, give it a few weeks until the crowds have died down and the whole thing will be less crowded.

Report from the organisers....ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT FOR COOLAGOWN 5K

Weather conditions ‘cool and dry with no rain’ favoured the running of the Coolagown 5k last Thursday evening which allowed the large crowd to enjoy the Race and Walk in the pretty setting of Coolagown village. 60 adults and up to 100 children took part in the Walk and over 250 runners registered for the 5k Run.

With a commentary throughout the race by Dick O’Brien, the first runner home in a time of 15.20 was James McCarthy, East Cork AC, 2 nd place was Sean McGrath, East Cork AC in 15.50 and in 3 rd place Andrew Sheehan, Leevale AC in 16.13.

The ladies were not far behind and first home was Martina Kiely, St. Finbarrs AC in 18.03, 2 nd place Niamh Roe, Leevale AC in 18.40 and in 3 rd place Eileen O’Callaghan, Eagle AC in 19.06.

After the Race and Walk the crowd enjoyed refreshments and home baking prepared by the Parents Association of Kilmagner NS, which was very much enjoyed by all. Goody Bags for the children and bottles of water were sponsored by St Nicholas AC – a very generous gesture greatly appreciated by Coolagown Development Group.

Once again the event was jointly sponsored by Rathbarry Stud and Fitzgerald Fallen Animal Services who presented the Cash Prizes to the first three male and three female winners. Coolagown Development Group acknowledges the very generous and always willing annual sponsorship of this important fund-raising event. Without this sponsorship it would be impossible to hold the event, the proceeds of which is shared between the Development Group and Kilmagner NS.

The organisers also acknowledge the generosity of those who supplied and erected the tents on the village Green and the many local people who volunteered to act as stewards and who helped in all sorts of ways throughout the very enjoyable evening.
