Results of the Great Railway Run...25k, 10k & 5k - Mon 5th May 2014

While this event is usually held in November, the organiers decided this year to hold the 2014 event on the May Bank Holiday Monday. It was of course a very busy weekend with plenty of other events to choose from such as the Bandon Half-Marathon, the Limerick Marathon and the Bay Run Half-Marathon. In that context, it was always going to be interesting to see how the numbers would hold up.

In November 2013, they got 87 in the 25km race. This time around, it was up to 114...an increase of about 27. In the 10k race, they got 121 as opposed to 154 last November, a drop of 33. The 5k numbers were not timed last year while this year, they got 57. So overall, the numbers were pretty much the same despite of the choice of other events. It should also be noted that the weather was pretty awful which might have deterred a few.

Tough conditions for sure with a stiff southerly breeze head-on throughout and even stiffer competition for numbers on a busy weekend for racing.

3rd time doing this event and a good decision I think to move to 4 weeks before Cork as opposed to 2 weeks after Dublin. Great marathon prep....not too many other

Well done to the organisers and all who helped out on a wet an windy bank holiday weekend.

A nice 10k on a very scenic route despite the adverse weather. Well marshalled and a last 2k ideal for a fast finish. Changing facilities and generous refreshments right beside the finish. An event well worth a trip from Wicklow

first time running the race, ideally suited in the calendar now as a Cork prep race. well marshalled, frequent water areas over the 25k, and a decent course. echo everything john said and i'll definitely be running this in future.

25km in that weather was tough going. soup, sandwiches and coffee was a god send after the race.

shuttle bus back to cork was a nice touch

My 3rd time doing this event also & have always found it to be an enjoyable race. The only problem is my times are getting slower :)

Was there a issue with the results, times seem to be out by two mins or so in the 5k?

The results are out by 1min46secs for everyone in the 5k, this has now been corrected on the great railway run website

First time doing it and really enjoyed it despite the conditions. Very welcome surprise with the soup afterwards! Well done to organisers and a big thank you to stewards and water station people for putting up with the wind and rain.
