Fionnuala Britton finishes 4th in Antrim Cross Country...Sat 4th Jan 2014

The Antrim IAAF International Cross Country was held in Greenmount on Saturday, the 4th of Jan 2014. In the senior womens race, Fionnuala Britton finished in 4th place which was actually a pretty good result considering the three athletes in front of her were all born in Ethiopia and are now competing for different countries.

In the European Cross Country Championships in Belgrade last month, Almensh Belete finished in 6th place some 15 seconds behind Fionnuala. Gemma Steel who won the bronze medal in Belgrade was 6 seconds ahead of Fionnuala then and was 20 seconds behind today.

Well done to the east cork lads, great to see some local athletes getting involved in a race of this standard and more than holding their own

This is the type of race that athletes such as the East Cork boys should be involved in,if we are ever to raise the standard of distance running in Cork. Fionnuala Britton has proved that to reach a certain level athletes must compete at a high standard and then and only then will we see an improvement, I would also suggest that the Cork Athletics Board with its big cash surplus should assist to some degree athletes who would seek out high level competition. All the East Cork boys and there are many of them, are all home grown, that is what is needed people who have come up through the Juvenile and Junior ranks here in Cork, other athletes can relate to these and not to athletes who come on the scene for a season or two and then disappear.
