Results of the Eagle AC 5 Mile Road Race in Carrigaline...Sun 28th Feb 2010
After a heavy frost last night, it was touch and go for a while as to whether this race would go ahead. After leaving home to help out at the race, it was obvious that there were icy spots on the roads. However, I should have known that the race director for the 2010 race, Joe Roche had everything in hand. After the cancellation of several races recently due to ice, Joe was taking no chances and was busy browsing his favourite E-Bay website over the last few weeks. On arriving at the sports hall, I found out that Joe had been out since the early hours of this morning clearing the course with his latest purchase.
Joe also asked me to mention on the blog that he is able to offer his services to other race organisers in case there is a cold snap again. So if the lads in Mallow AC are reading this then there is no need to cancel the Mallow 10 again next year...just give Joe a buzz and he'll be up with the Terminator 4000. Joe also mentioned that certain terms and conditions would apply.....he cannot be held responsible for things like road markings, road signs, small dogs and the like.
Results and Photos...
There were 206 finishers this year which is down on last year's figure of 263.

Preview of the Eagle AC 5 mile Road Race (Carrigaline) - Sun 28th Feb (11am)
This 5 mile road race takes place next Sunday, the 28th of February at 11am in Carrigaline, just South of Cork City. Normally, this race takes place just before the Ballycotton '10'. This year however, there is a full 3 week gap between the two so you have loads of time to recover.
Directions & Parking...See the map above. If you are coming from Cork (top of map), take the left at the 2nd roundabout as you enter the town. This is the relief road and you should see a signpost for Crosshaven. Go through the next major junction with traffic lights and take the first right into the car park.
Sign-On & Registration...This takes place in the local community centre. It is only about 200 metres or so from the car park. Note that there is only limited car parking available near the community centre and parking on the main road is strictly forbidden. The entry fee is €10 with €2 of this going to a local charity.
If you are still not too sure about where the community hall is, click on this LINK. Make sure the 'MAP' option is selected and you can zoom in and out to get your bearings.
Weather......As always, the weather is a factor with any race at this time of year. It's probably likely that the race will go ahead but be sure to check for the latest info before you make the trip. There will be a course inspection on the morning of the race.
The Course...It's not the flatest of races with a few drags out along the course but nothing too bad. You start about 500 metres East of the Community Centre in a housing estate (When you come out of the community centre, turn right and follow everyone else to the start). The road is fairly wide at the start and by the time the runners reach the main road, the field should be well spread out. There is nothing special about the first 2 miles. It's pretty flat with a few tiny hills and you can expect your first mile time to be very fast. Note that the road here is not closed so watch out for any cars. Just before the 2 mile mark, you turn left into probably the most serious hill of the race which is about 400 metres long. It's not so bad if you take it handy. Then through 2 kinks in the road and down into the village of Shanbally. Left past the church, climb slightly and then fall downhill to the 3 mile mark, all inside the hard shoulder of the main road. At about 3.5 miles, you turn left off the main road and then you have the next climb. It's pretty short but enough to get you into trouble if you push too hard. Then you run downhill to the 4 mile mark which is in a hollow and then climb back out at the other side. This is the 3rd real hill in the race and the least serious. After that, nearly all of the running is flat or slightly downhill as you finish through the housing estates. After the last corner, which is a sharp left, the finish is about 70 metres away so you should see it in plenty of time. So overall, probably not a course for getting PB's but it's not too bad either. The 11am start is a good idea. It means people can go there, do the race, go home and still have the afternoon free.
If you want to have a closer look at the course, you can find it on the MapMyRun website.
A flyer for the race should be available HERE.

Some items Lost & Found recently...
Found..... :o)
During the Mallow 10 mile road race back on the 7th of Feb, someone lost their belt for their heart monitor watch. This was found just after the race. If you are the owner of this belt then send me an e-mail and I'll pass on your details. My e-mail address is shown on the right hand side of this page.
Lost...... :o(
Someone has lost their new Garmin 305 watch somewhere on the road between the Radisson Hotel and Glounthaune (2kms apart) in East Cork. The thing is that this watch requires a special docking station to charge it so it will be of no use to anyone just finding it. If on the off chance you came across it then send me an e-mail and I'll pass on your contact details.

Newspaper Article about running........
Just catching up on some newspaper articles that appeared over the last month. This particular one is about landing on your heel while you run. Reading through some previous articles on the Internet, they seem to preach about not landing on your heel which is easier said than done.
Now this article suggests that heel striking is not so bad after all!!.......especially for distance running.
You can find the article HERE.

New website for West Cork race...
For a long time, there has been a major lack of road races in West Cork. If you live near the city or in the east of the county then you have no shortage of races to choose from. That is beginning to change this year as we have already had the very successful 10 mile road race in the Mealagh Valley near Bantry and there is also Cork BHAA 5k race in Macroom and a 10k race in Dunmanway to look forward to.
A new website has now been set up to promote the 10k race in Dunmanway in June. Looking at the race route, it would seem to be a nice route in the countryside to the South-East of the town. You can have a look at the website HERE.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'ESB' 5 km race in Mahon - Sun 21st Feb (11am)
At the moment, waiting for a BHAA race is a bit like waiting for a bus.......you're waiting ages for one and then two come together! Last Sunday, there was the cross country race and this week, we have the ESB 5km race in Mahon.
Registration...This is in the Mahon Community centre, shown as a X on the map. It's very easy to find. If you are travelling down into Mahon on the Skehard road, just turn left at the church and the Community centre is in about 300 metres on the left. To get your bearings, click on this LINK. Use the + and - to zoom IN and OUT and try MAP and SATELLITE to get a clearer view.
Course...It's a short run of few hundred metres down to the start. See the map above. The race starts along the road on the way down to Blackrock Castle. After a few hundred metres, you need to follow the stewards instructions and veer off right into the car park and accross it. Now you need to be careful. Just as you get onto the walkway, you need to take a very sharp right. It's not so easy when the runners are still bunched, running fast and then have to brake and change direction. Once you get onto the walkway, you are on the nicest part of the route. You are running on a smooth tarmac surface along the water's edge with scenic views over the inner harbour. It's pretty straight and dead flat for the next 1.5 miles. Just one word of caution here. This walkway is not closed off for the race. It is a very popular amenity with plenty of people out walking with their kid's and dog's. Just keep it in mind. After the 2 mile mark, you are heading back past the large radio mast on your right. You run accross the weir, up a small ramp and then out and right onto another walkway. Here's the tough part. You need to run up and over the pedistrian bridge that goes over the South link road. It's probably a good 50 metres of uphill running and more than enough to leave you panting. The bridge is wide enough for about 2 people so if there are walkers there, runners will need to run in single file. Once you run down the other side of the bridge, you have a flat and dead straight run into the finish. The thing to remember here is that the finish is just beyond the tunnel under the main road. Once you see it, you know you're almost there.
Apres Race...That tunnel you just ran through was in fact under the Skehard road. To get back to the Community centre, just follow the road down and turn left at the church, a jog of about 1 km.If you want a closer look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website. I plotted the course in the SATELLITE view so it should be the more accurate option to look at.
Overall...Considering that the new modified Cork Marathon route is likely to follow this 5k race route in 2010, it might be of interest to anyone planning ahead to the big event in June. Other than that, it's a flat and fast course with just one blip. The sections by the water are scenic and the path surface is good. Just watch out for those walkers!
Results of the Cork BHAA 'Cross Country' race - Sun 14th Feb 2010...
It looks as if the clash of dates with the 10 mile road race in Bantry had only a slight effect on the numbers for this cross country race with 116 runners attending. This compares to 109 in 2009 and 108 in 2008. As predicted, not everyone will travel all the ways to West Cork for a 10 mile road race and a cross country race will not appeal to everyone so each event will attract different people.
As in Bantry, the weather in Cork City was wall to wall sunshine for this one as well.

What a stunning day for a road race! The skies in West Cork were a deep blue with loads of sunshine and not a cloud in sight. The temperature however was still pretty low, especially in the shade as evidenced by the frost on the grass at the side of the road out along the course.
Those of you who didn't make the trip to West Cork might be wondering what the race was like? One word.......tough! In fact, incredibly tough! I kind of guessed that it was going to be hilly but it was a lot hillier than I thought it might be. It surely has to be the toughest 10 mile road race in the country. But for all that, it was still an incredible route with some stunning scenery on offer. Everyone I spoke to afterwards felt more or less the same about the race.......really tough!....but still an excellent race.
The main feature of this race of course was the scenery. For the first few miles, we were high above the valley floor and there were great views to our left. On the return trip on the other side, we had great views of Mullaghmesha mountain on the left with Sugarloaf and Hungry Hill on the Beara Peninsula visible way off in the distance. Another unusual feature along the course was the 'house' in the valley below just after the start which happened to be the fuselage of an old plane! In fact, this course had just about everything except flat sections ;o)
For their first outing, Bantry AC should be congratulated on holding an excellent event. Perhaps it's not as high profile as some of the other 10 mile races in Munster but the location is truly exceptional. With the Dungarvan and Mallow races, you always kind of feel that you are never that far from a town. The Mealagh Valley is really a special spot and I would recommend this race to anyone............just be warned........it's tough!! ;o)

Preview of races in Cork next Sunday 14th Feb....Bantry 10 Mile & Cork BHAA Cross Country...
Next weekend is a busy weekend for races with no less than 4 events in the Munster region. On Saturday, there is a 5k in Killarney while at the opposite side of the province, there is a 5 mile race in Waterford.
On Sunday, there are 2 events to choose from...a 10 mile road race in Bantry and a Cross Country race organised by the Cork BHAA in Cork City. Despite the clash of dates, not everyone is interested in running 10 miles or in running cross country so hopefully each event will appeal to a different type of runner.
Bantry 10 (11am).......This 10 mile road race will take place in the Mealagh Valley to the North-East of Bantry town. The route goes up one side of the Mealagh Valley and back down the other side. It is in the countryside all of the time and goes nowhere near Bantry town. The roads are very quiet and if the weather co-operates then it should be a very scenic spot for a 10 mile road race. Another big plus for this race is that the entry fee is only €10 which is very cheap when compared to other events in this area. This is a brand new race and it will be interesting to see how many runners it attracts.
Please note the start line is about 800 metres from the regsitration point and the last entries will be taken at 10:30am. If you are travelling from Cork City then you should plan on leaving at 8:30 to 8:45am at the latest.
For the latest info on this race, you should visit the website for the race and look out for updates.
Cork BHAA Cross Country Race (11am)....This 5 km race takes place in Beaumont Park in Blackrock, Cork City. It is the only cross country race on the BHAA calendar and last year, it attracted just over 100 runners. For anyone new to the running scene, you might think that this cross country race will be a race with mud and dirt everywhere. The reality is that this is just a race on grass rather than on tarmac. If it's wet, it might be a bit slippy but otherwise, it's just like a normal race. As the ground is soft, you'll need to work a bit harder during the race so don't expect your time to be close to your 5 km time on the road.
Registration.....The sign on for this race is at the Cork Constitution Rugby grounds. If you are not sure where that is, click on this link and zoom in and out to get your bearings. As you can see from the map below, Beaumont Park is just accross the road. The Yellow dots show how to get there.
Course......Basically, it is roughly 3 loops around the same course. See the map above. See A...the start and finish point are near here. For the very first lap, you head accross towards E and then back towards B. Other than that, you basically follow the dots above.
A-B....slightly uphill & the ground is just short grass.
B-C...here you are running under trees on a rough path and grass. It is slightly downhill all the way so it's the most likely place you might trip if you are not careful. It can be a bit boggy half ways down.
C-D...this is mostly uphill running and it's slow going. The closer you get to D, the steeper it gets. In fact just before D, a lot of people will walk this. It's steep and you'd be forgiven for going down on all fours trying to get up it! As the ground gets cut up, it gets more difficult the 2nd and 3rd time around. The only thing though is that it's short...just watch your footing!
D-E...initially flat and then gradually downhill.
E-A...more or less flat.
Shoes...the obvious choice are proper cross country shoes but a lot of people won't have these. If the day is dry, you could probably get away with a pair of old runners. You would however have to watch the downhill sections and the sharp corners.

More Mallow 10 photos...
If you look at the previous post for the Mallow 10, you'll notice that I have added even more links for photos with large galleries from FinishLinePhotographs and from Joe Murphy of Eagle AC.
In addition to those, there is another gallery from our regular race photographer Jorge Ruiz Villasante which are a class apart. Most people take race photos from one or two stationary spots and it's great to have so many of those type of galleries available. Jorge however cycles along the course and has the ability to spot what might make an excellent photo.
Here are a sample of a few...

A selection of faster runners...
No shortage of red 'Mallow 10' beanie hats...
The anticipation of a 'High 5'...

Checking out who is behind...

If you can smile, you're going too slow!! ;o)
The eventual winner of the ladies race, Lorraine Manning of Raheny Shamrock AC pacing off Cork runner Tim Lucey of Bandon AC
Sheer effort...

More High 5's!
Jorge's photos are a pleasure to view and a slideshow of his Mallow 10 gallery can be found HERE.

Just over 500 runners turned out for this 10 mile road race in North Cork which is pretty impressive considering that it was only 1 week after the Dungarvan 10 and it had to be cancelled from it's original date in early January. Last year, they got 576 runners and if the weather had been kinder in early January, they may well have got somewhere in the region of 700 entries instead.
Despite a bit of a breeze, the conditions for the race were pretty good. A bit dull but it was cool and dry which was the main thing. A lot of the faces present today were also present in Dungarvan last week and judging from some of the times, the short gap of a week between the 10 mile races was enough for most people to recover and post some fine times in Mallow.
Results...
(Sorry about the broken link earlier today. Mallow AC changed the name of the results file so the link had broken as a result. It should be ok now)
By the way, this was the 2nd race in the John Buckley Sports Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series and the results after 2 races should be available soon.
Photos...(Updated Tues 9th)
There were plenty of cameras out along the course and there should be loads of photos available soon.
1) To get the ball rolling, we have 3 short albums from Eddie Keogh of Eagle AC...
2) Another batch here from Paudie Birmingham...
4) Joe Murphy of Eagle AC has a large gallery of 329 photos HERE.
5) Jorge Ruiz Villasante has an excellent gallery HERE.

The FINAL Ballycotton '10' list is out!!...The final list of successful entrants for the 2010 Ballycotton 10 Mile Road Race is now available.
The alphabetical list is HERE
The list in numerical order is HERE
It would seem as if there are 3340 entrants. That's about the same as last year. Considering that club runners had a full 2 week window to get their entries in, does that suggest that the huge growth in numbers attending road races has not resulted in lots of new members for the various athletic clubs??? Are most people quite content to do their own thing without joining any club?

Entry List
Weather forecast for the Mallow '10' on Sunday...The current forecast is looking pretty good for this race. Broken clouds with a slight chance of rain. Met Eireann are predicting...
Frost and fog clearing, becoming breezy in places with southeasterly winds freshening. Mostly dry with some sunny spells, but rather cloudy along parts of the southwest and west coasts, with possibly a little light rain at times. Top temperatures 6 to 9 C
Update...Sat 6th 3pm...It looks as if it might be a bit cloudier than expected but the BBC are now predicting that any rain won't hit the South-West until later in the day. So fingers crossed, it's looking good for Mallow!.
Temperature wise, it will be ideal.....cool but not freezing.
As for the wind, a moderate South-Easterly breeze is forecast. If that's the case then it won't be a factor until after the 6 mile mark when we turn South and head back towards Mallow. We will be running into it for about 3 miles until roughly the 9 mile mark.

Preview of the Mallow 10 mile road race...12:30pm Sun 7th Feb 2010
The thing to remember about the Mallow 10 is that the registration, start and finish points are in 3 completely different parts of the town. If this is your first time doing it, take note of the instructions below. If you have done the Mallow 10 before then be warned that the course has changed somewhat and the start and finish lines have moved...so read on.

Getting to the Youth Hall...

Getting registered...
As I mentioned in a previous post, if you are going then you should register online before midnight on Friday. Not only is the entry cheaper (€12 as opposed to €15 for non-registered), it also means that you don't have to join long queues on the day and it makes life a lot easier for the organisers.
Getting your number...
When you register online, you are indicating your intent to attend the race. You have to go to the Youth Hall to collect your number. If you do not pre-register, you can enter on the day for €15. Please note that the last entries are at 11:30am!!

Getting to the Youth Hall...
If this is your first time doing the Mallow 10, then check out the map above. If you are coming from Cork on the N20, take the exit into the town at the roundabout. Keep going straight up into the town and when you see some dudes head on a pedestal, turn left here up the hill and look for parking. The Youth Hall is just around the corner.
Getting to the Start.......
Note that the start line is about a mile from the Youth Hall and it's different from last year!! From the Youth Hall, head back into town, left at the 'dude on the pedestal' and downhill to the river. Cross over the Blackwater River, straight through the traffic lights and after a few hundred metres you come to a garage...see the black dot on the map. Last year, the start line was just up the road to the right. This year, you need to take a left and go to the start line which is up in a residential area. The race starts at 12:30pm sharp so give yourself plenty of time to get there.

Getting back from the finish.....
Last year the finish was outside the local Co-Op shop and the road was pretty busy....not a great spot for the finish of a race. This year, the finish is in a cordoned off lane of the main N20 road near the roundabout, about a mile from the Youth Hall. Considering that this is the main Cork/Limerick road, the Gardai and Mallow AC don't want several hundred finishers crossing the road in dribs and drabs causing traffic delays to say nothing about the safety aspect. They want everyone to follow the stewards instructions and to use the nearby footbridge which crosses safety over the main road. From there, head back into town...straight up the slight hill and then left at the pedestal. No doubt Mallow AC will have a fine spread ready for all the runners after the race.

The Course....
As a 10 mile course, it's pretty reasonable although there are a few small drags. Nothing major but perhaps enough to lose you those vital seconds if you were trying for a PB.
The race starts in a residential area and back towards the garage and then left. From here, the route is the same as last year until the 9.5 mile mark. After the 1 mile mark, you run underneath the N20 road and just before the 2 mile mark, there is a bit of a climb. After that, you come out onto the hard shoulder of the N20 and you run roughly 2 miles along this stretch until you reach the main roundabout where you take a left and on to the 4 mile mark.
From here, it's reasonably flat as you head out towards the Race Course. Soon the road narrows and hard shoulder disappears but hopefully there will be Gardai on hand like in previous years to direct the traffic.
Just after 6 miles, you turn off left and onto the nicest part of the course. The roads here are quiet and traffic is no longer a concern. Soon you cross a small bridge and you tackle a small climb on the other side. Nothing serious but coming at around 7 miles, it will test people to see if they can stay with the stronger runners in their group.
Out to Newberry Cross and left past a small industrial estate. The road is pretty straight here and reasonably flat. Just after 8 miles, there is a sharp downhill section and a slight detour from last year's route as you stay right and then left. Back on the road for the town and again, there is a short hill here which can be testing.
At about 9.4 miles just at the railway bridge and the N20 flyover, the route changes. Last year, you would have carried straight on......in past the church...left over the bridge...left onto Park Road and on to the finish. This year, you are going to take a right just after the railway bridge and you run up the slip road to join the N20. Then a sharp left and run in towards the finish which is on a cordoned off lane.
Instructions.......
Please see below some instructions from Mallow AC for the race...
Key Points for participants and spectators.
- As the numbers have grown by 300% over the past four years, the course has changed as we have been forced to avoid the town centre
- The start is to the left of the petrol station, just by Davis College. (a few hundred metres from the old start) in a mainly residential area.
- The finish is now by the roundabout bar on the main Cork/Limerick Road. While this is not ideal we have struggled to find a better option
- Runners will not be allowed run back out the course once finished
- Runners will not be allowed use headphones/music players
- Once leaving the finish area runners will be asked to use the footbridge to cross the road and return to hall
Registration
- Pre registered entries are €12, Registration via www.mallowac.ie will be available until mid-night Friday

- Entries on the day are €15 (Runners on the day will need to complete entry forms available in the hall)
- Last entries on the day will be 11:30am

Mallow 10 mile coming up...Now that the Dungarvan 10 is out of the way, it's time to look forward to the Mallow 10 mile road race next Sunday, the 7th of February. This was originally supposed to be on the 10th of January but had to be cancelled due to the icy conditions back then.
This will be the 2nd race in the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series. The remaining 2 races are the Ballycotton '10' in March and the Kilnaboy '10' in April.
If you are going to Mallow next Sunday then you should pre-register online...
1) If you registered already for the 10th of Jan race then there is no need to register again.
2) If you pre-register, the entry fee is only €12. You do NOT pay online. All you are doing is giving your details (name, club, age, etc) to Mallow AC so that they can get all the information into the race software beforehand rather than trying to do it on the day in a mad rush. On race day, you will just go to the pre-registered queue, pay your €12 and collect your number. Nice and quick.
3) If you don't pre-register, the entry fee is €15 on the day. So, it makes sense to pre-enter!
A preview of the race coming soon...

Results of the East Cork 3k road race - Tues 2nd Feb 2010...There was a turnout of about 136 runners for this 3 km road race in Midleton in East Cork which is the 2nd last race in the series. Normally, 100 to 120 runners is the rough number that might be considered a 'comfortable maximum' for this race. At 136, it's getting a bit crowded. You may have noticed that I did not put up a preview or notice for this race for the simple fact that they were likely to get a big turnout anyway without me giving it even more publicity.
