Garretstown 10 Mile Road Race.........Did anyone do this race on Saturday? What did you think of it? What was the course like? Hilly? Accurate? Big/small crowd? Were there refreshments and prizes afterwards?

Comments recieved so far.....

"Done this race this morning, really good run tough start but the rest was fine lovely run i must say well done to all involved in organizing it really enjoyed my run in this one.
...they had prizes yesterday after wards in herlihys bar in ballinspittle they also had a few water stations along the 10 mile run it was all bottled water that was handed out to the runners the good stuff ballygowan not like what you'd get at some events that have a big field, i think it was 50/60 runners took part yesterday not more than that, anyway very enjoyable event."

"I ran in the Garrettstown 10 and enjoyed it but it was a very tough course. There was a very long tough climb (about 1.5 miles) up the Old Head of Kinsale. Comparing the times of the top finishers with the Ballycotton 10 it seemed to me that everyone had about 6 minutes added to their time for this run. There were prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female but no age categories - my only hope! It was well organised. "

I ran in the Garrettstown 10 and enjoyed it but it was a very tough course. There was a very long climb (over 2 miles) up the Old Head of Kinsale. Comparing the times of the top finishers with the Ballycotton 10 it seemed to me that everyone had about 6 minutes added to their time for this run. There were prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female but no age categories - my only hope! It was well organised.

John, in the interests of accuracy I drove around the Garrettstown 10 course this afternoon and clocked the climb up to the top of the Old Head from the beach as 1.5 miles and not over 2 as I said in my last comment. But it is a tough climb!

John,Just a question for pat o'sullivan what did you think of the start of the race pat i personally found it very tiring on my legs although i really hate hills and ive done nearly all the road races since the grandons 5 bhaa event i had nothing left after 9 miles yesterday and i stayed in 9th place almost the whole race and got caught by two lads with very little to go but fair play to both of them cause i was a long way in front of them both finnished strong i thought i was guaranteed 9th spot but thought wrong as this was my first 10 mile run i was happy with 11th place 1.18.04 time agree with pat the hills cost me a fair bit of time as i was drained from the 1.5 mile one good to see some comments about these events as road running is a great past time and enjoyable events make it even more enjoyable well done to all runners yesterday for supporting this run its a good race tough but good.

John,

I didn't see John Dunphy's last comment until now - after you have taken you break. However, please allow me to answer him here even though he may not see this for a while.

I found the start of the race tiring - a 0.5 mile very steep climb which I took very slowly. But psychologically I found the pull up the Old Head more difficult. I thought it would never end! I think I was passed by the same two that passed you near the end as well and I could do nothing about it. I'd like another go at the course now that I know it. It's a challenge!!

Hi john, just to let you know i ran the kinsale 5 on the 3rd of august and what a course it is excellent i must say, You were spot on fast course this has to go down as my favourite 5 mile run this year i really enjoyed it,not to sure of the turn out but it looked big enough at a guess. Also just to point out that the entry fee of €10.00 was great because a good cause will benifit from it.I have entered the galway 10 in october 6th time 2.00pm for a cancer charity so will look forward to this great cause hope other cork people will support this one, Seems to me that we could do a lot more for charity if we could get a few new events up and running just to support people in need well done to the galway organizers for well worth while events like the galway 10 great cause.
